Memories of Norden,
a 25 day bicycle tour of Sweden and Norway near
midsummer 1994, by Dave Dermott
Around the Baltic Sea
by Catherine McCammon
"I cycled around the Baltic Sea from mid-June to mid-July 1996, starting in
Stockholm and going clockwise, finishing in Stockholm a month later. It
was a great trip!"
Ostsee Umrundung
(in German) by Peter Alteheld.
The report of a 37 days (from July 21, 1994 to August 26, 1994),
4240km tour of the Baltic See along the route:
Hamburg -
Schleswig/Holstein - Denmark (Border-Frederikshavn) -
Norway (Moss-Ostby) - Sweden (Sorsjoern-Grisslehamn) -
Aland-Island (Eckeroe-Mariehamn) - Finland
(Naantali-Helsinki) -
Estonia (Tallinn-Valga) - Latvia (Valka-Bauska) - Lithuania
(Salociai-Lazdijai) - Poland (Sejny-Kostrzyn) - Brandenburg -
Berlin - Magdeburg - Hannover - Paderborn
Hønefoss-Oslo-Gothenburg-Copenhagen 1995
by Svein
Høvik.
"The "tradition" of going to Copenhagen in May started in 1992 when we
took the ferry from Oslo to Frederikshavn and cycled via the Danish
mainland Jutland. However, with only 350 km this tour became too
little of a challenge after 2 times. Therefore, in 1994, we did our
first trip to Copenhagen via the Swedish West Coast."
Denmark
Cycling in Denmark
by David Dellinger. Includes General Information, Fyn and Aero,
Copenhagen and the Island of Bornholm.
Family
Touring in Denmark 1995
(the less up-to-date local version of Family Touring in Denmark 1995 is
still available)
by Svein
Høvik.
"After a successful biking holiday in the northern parts of the Danish
mainland Jutland in 1993, we wanted to see Djursland and Sealand in
1995. The starting point was Hobro by the Mariager Fjord. We [a family
of 5] had one Burley d'Light trailer for Trine [4 years old] and her
personal luggage, and relatively large panniers on all 4 bicycles."
Markku Tuomi has written up beautiful reports of severals rides he did
in Central Finland in 1994, one per month, partly on-road, partly
off-road.
January 1994
"[...] four months of illness and recovery (and no cycling) at the end
of 1993 evaporated whatever fitness I used to have. I was diagnosed
with
ankylosing spondylitis (a rheumatoid disease of the spine) and for
a while it looked like I might not be cycling again. [...] It is
overcast and not so cold (- 8 C) on January 23"
February
1994
"Sunday February 27 was another glorious winter day here,
Jyvaeskylae, Finland, above the 62th parallel: clear blue sky,
sparkling snow and the sun low above the horizon. Time for a bike
ride. [...] The temperature is very pleasant, -9 C, the wind
unpleasant, in my face."
March 1994
"Sunday March 13 appears uninspiring. The sky is grey. The snow is
dirty. There is slush, it is +1 C. The breakfast newspaper is dull,
the oatmeal bland. Finland is depressing. What can save the day? A
bike ride!"
April 1994
"Spring was on its way, finally. With the arrival of April, I had
discarded studded tires and other winter equipment. Riding had been
chilly and dirty, the scenery bleak but then the snow really started
melting and the ice fishers were driven off the lakes (or
drowned). Monday, April 25 was a pretty day for my traditional 100 km
spring test run. "
May 1994
"The dark forest envelops me and welcomes me home. Telephone poles
have large heaps of squirrel-processed cones at the bottom. Large
boulders speck the forest floor, remnants of the ice age. [...] At
home I feel happy at my first "century" after nine months of ankylosing
spondylitis."
June 1994
"The rain is relentless in beating against me. There is no way of
enjoying the scenery but my memory tells me it is rather nice. [...]
At times the rain falls down ever harder, the drops hurt my face and
my bell keeps ringing faintly. I see no other cyclists. Sissies."
July 1994
"It was Thursday, June 7, and I found myself in Lappeenranta, a town
of some 60,000 inhabitants in southeastern Finland, only about 20 km
from the Russian border. [...] So, on a most beautiful hot summer day,
I set out on my own, panniers fully loaded, to the northwest and
Jyvaeskylae, where I live."
August 1994
"Saturday, August 13, was a nice day, none too cold. The summer of
Central Finland was gradually coming to an end but one could still
wear shorts and other summer stuff for cycling."
Norway
Bicycling in
Lofoten
by Susanne and Ole Jacobi
"In 1993 Susanne and Ole Jacobi went on a bicycle tour in Lofoten and
Vesterelen in Northern Norway. This succession of WWW pages consists
of watercolours made on the journey with some
comments regarding bicycling on the rocky islands." This is not your
ordinary text-cum-pictures report!
Tour des Fjordes
-93
A recumbent ride from Bergen (Norway) to Motala (Sweden) with Richard
Freytag, Charles Clinton and Ian Feldman,
from the pages of Torsten Lif, which
contain several other reports
Cyclo-camping au pays
des Vikings (in French)
by Hélène et Dominique Farcy
Four weeks, 2500km, 30000m gain... a great ride in a great bicycle
touring country.
Sweden
Vätternrundan,
"the biggest exercise race on bicycle in the world"
Tjej-Vättern,
"one of the biggest exercise on bicycle only for women"
