- Swedish and SA security authorities are to investigate allegations of an official apartheid government link to Swedish prime minister Olaf Palme's assassination in 1986.
Former hit squad commander and convicted killer Eugene de Kock implicated former SA spy Craig Williamson yesterday in Palme's killing. Deputy SA national intelligence co-ordinator Moe Shaik said De Kock had said a lot which needed to be followed up. Palme, who was a staunch supporter of the ANC's struggle against the NP's apartheid government, was shot in Stockholm in 1986. His assassin has since evaded detection and capture. President Nelson Mandela's spokesman, Parks Mankahlana, said De Kock's allegation was "shocking and should be investigated thoroughly". It was "regrettable that at this late stage of the trial he cannot be cross examined on the allegation".
