Not much to say, 'cept Bjork is to die for, and Whale are sex. Any news on
them by the way. IMO female scandinavian voices are pure sex, not only when

work in the Music Business in Nashville, TN with writers and publishers
collecting their royalties through SESAC (same thing as STIM, TONO, KODA,
TEOSTO, GEMA, PRS, BUMA, etc.) I have been traveling to Scandinavia for the
past 6 years visiting other performing rights societies, and I worked with
STIM in Stockholm, ...saa jag kann lite svenska ocksaa.
Most of my favorite music is pop/rock or pop/jazz, especially
Scandinavian artists like Marie Fredriksson, Tomas Ledin, Niklas Stromstedt,
Mauro Scocco, Ratata, Orup, Adolphson och Falk, Edin Adahl, and Bjorn J:son
Lindh, but I listen to nearly all types of music, especially if they are done
well. Since I am also a writer/publisher, I am very interested in keeping in
touch with what is happening in Scandinavian music, including Indies, and may
be interested in working with others in bringing Scandianavia music to the US
and subpublishing American copyrights in Scandinavia. If anyone else in
Scandinavia is interested in exchanging information, please write me or
e-mail me!

Circle - Silver EP 7" (Bad Vugum, Finland)

This band have been described as unique blending of Loop, Terminal
Cheesecake, Scratch Acid and Live Skull and this 7" is more brutal
than any of the above I feel. 'Crawatt' is astonishingly good, an urgent
crashing riff supplemented with sort of monastic vocal chanting and
a ferocious ending, 'Circus' is one minute of general pounding
mayhem with a fragmented fairground organ, 'Silver' is possibly the
best track similar to Crawatt while 'Polka' is a right old knees up
polka similar to The Ex with everything in tracks 1, 2 and 3 being
thrown in for good measure at the end. This sort of mayhem could
only come a region that so many good bands, there's no need for them
to dip their toes into other US/UK scenes and dilute their noise.

Sweetheart - Mr Cocktail / White-Eye 7" (Bad Vugum, Finland)

This is a little more like The Cows with a few brass surges and
evil vocals, 'Mr Cocktail' is a slower brooding number which can't
get away from Birthday Party references, 'White-Eye' turns into
early Fall towards the end except the vocals are totally raw by
now.

Sweetheart - Well Dressed Meat LP (Bad Vugum, Finland)

Their debut LP, like many LPs, has it's highs and lows but after
three listens can't quite maintain the high standards set by the
other Bad Vugum singles. Sure it's good and pretty varied but the
tracks seem to me to be good variations on the current AmRep sound
I've heard before with some added space and dynamics and a little
less bass heavy. Yet again, mentioning the Birthday Party isn't a
lazy comparison - swampy grinding rock with some staccatto riffing
and less intimidating English vocals make some of the standout
tracks like 'Moving' and 'Satanism' go along with a bit of a
lurching swing. 'Human Skyscraper' is a little more frantic and
the finale of 'Ephraim' finishes on a high. A couple of slower
quirky tracks with Gavin Friday type vocals spoil the mood a bit
tho'.

Deep Turtle - Snakefish EP 7" (Bad Vugum, Finland)

I seem to remember a guy on the grunge list raving about this band
ages ago, along with his own/friends band 'Germ Attack', now I can
see why. For track 1, 'Arbean', imagine Blind Idiot God in their
non-dub mode but more frantic, oh, and an occassional orchestral
swell sample. JazzPunk rhythms and shouted vocals make them sound a
little like the punk bands I've heard from Holland (Mortzelpronk,
Zowiso, Svatsox...) 'Eko'Arak' is the odd one-out, a simple bass
driven verse with spazz guitars and a wig-out stop-start ending which
is brilliant. 'Choclopolka' sounds to me like a speeded up Sun City
Girls 45 second instrumental version of an Eastern Bloc National
Anthem with prog-rock guitar work. 'Riola' follows the theme with
more ace stop-start rhythm, what seems like a UFO landing in the
middle and ends with traditional Bad Vugum all out vocal damage.
Similarly excellent.

Liimanarina - Maailman Tylsin Vittumaisuus 7" (Bad Vugum, Finland)

Another staunchly independent Finnish band on the Bad Vugum label,
this time more lo-fi and experimental with fewer 'power-chords'
and/or jazz tendancies. I won't begin to mention titles but I've
discovered my favourite word is 'ilmastointilaitteita' and that
they sound like early Half Japanese, 'And This Day'/Hex End.Hour
era Fall or a more imaginative DIY/Riot Grrrl Band which means that
this is nothing short of essential. There are great hidden guitar
melodies and chord changes in there amongst drums that sound like
tea-trays, bagpipe-drone background, accordian and cheap bontempi
organs and stylophones. I must thank Kimmo for the translation of
Liimanarina, 'limma' meaning 'glue' and of course 'narina' meaning
the creaky sound a door makes when opened. All four tracks have a
rawness rarely heard in the US/UK music scene.

TOKEN NON-SCAN INDIE RELEASE:
Doo Rag - Swampwater Mopdown / Engine Bread 7" (Drunken Fish)

This sounds like we have the making of an amazing band here, Eric
Arn has seen them and I'm mighty jealous as I think this is the
business. 'Swampwater Mopdown' is a sort of a lo-fi Captain
Beefheart boogie with a bit of JSPX trash thrown in. 'Engine Bread'
is even better, authentic urgent swamp skiffle blues which just
stuns. Record Info - 'Doo Rag play music from another century.
They howl through instruments constructed out of vacuum cleaners
and gramaphones and beat on anything but drums...' There's even
a pretty funny interview with the band - DJ 'You sound like Howlin
Wolf singing out of a cave on Mars. How do you do that?'.
Doo Rag 'Err...We try really hard.' DJ 'What's that thing that
looks like a vacuum cleaner hose that goes up to a horn up there?'
Doo Rag 'That's our vocal apparatus.' You should try to get ahold
of this at all costs. They will be doing a John Peel Session in
the next few weeks, recorded down the phone line! This shouldn't
be missed.

22 Pisterpirkko - 22 Pisterpirkko Mini-LP

This is also weird but in a different sense as it's pop as far as I
can make out. It also has NOTHING in common with the other Finnish/
Bad Vugum bands I've reviewed, and why should it. The music is a
wild and crazy blend of Lonnie Donegan skiffle, garage, pop, schlock
horror rock (Lord Sutch!) and hammond organs. The vocals come across
as Pee Wee, I guess they don't take their 'art' too seriously. As a
result I'm pretty baffled, sometimes they remind me of the Residents
Commercial Album and then they end up sounding more like the B52s.
'Motorcycle Man' has some great slide guitar and a psych feel about
it, 'Don't Try To Tease Me' is an accoustic wimp-out which has more
in common with Daniel Johnson (title included). They seem
unbelievably out on their own planet, their world inhabited with
catchy pop melodies, hamfisted garage, cheesy organ and a fair
smattering of humour. As per usual, I'm on the ball here with a
1991 release!

An interview with Sigtryggur Baldursson (aka Bogomil Font).

It's Friday the 13th of August and the last ball of Bogomil Font
and the Millionaires is tonight. I sit in the bar at Kringlukrain
until Sigtryggur picks me up. It's been a major problem to contact
him, lots of things happening in his life and he hardly has time
for answering questions. But bless him, he can spare 30 minutes.
We go to Amma Lu and as we walk thru the door Sigtryggur says: "This
is good money, go where the money is". As soon as he's thru
the door he turns into Bogomil Font, the charmer. He kisses the
waitresses, jokes with another woman; kisses, charms and smiles
in every direction. You can see the women getting weak in the
knees. We go backstage.
THE CAREER:
GH How did you starting banging drums ?
SB My father was a 'latino drummer' - was always drumming the
wheel of the car - and I was infected by this, had some pots and
pans until dad bought me a small drum in 1972. I started to practice.
Then I was in a football/soccer a few years later and
lied to the other guys that I could play drums. They were so
impressed that I had to buy drums. It was an old wreck that my
cousin owned, and this got rid of the ball. About this time I met
Birgir Mogensen and we practised in the cellar at home. Had a
band called Hattimas, we two, Siggi Jons (aka Siggi Perez
Millionaire) who played guitar and also Bernard Gudmundsson.
GH When did you develop you personal drum stile ?
SB That came when I was in Theyr. That was a period of big
discoveries for me, for instance I discovered Joy Division and
all the new wave from England. I was mainly listening to jazz
before that.
GH When did Theyr start ?
SB 1980. The first LP (Thagad i hel, published 1980) was recorded
from January to September, with long breaks. That shows on the
record. There are some jelly ballads and then suddenly some
craziness; what happened then was that we discovered the new
wave and changed completely.
GH You were never this typical Kopavogur-band (in the years 1979 to
1980 there was the wakening of punk rock, with lots of gigs in
the Kopavogur cinema where Utangardsmenn/Outsiders and
Fraebblarnir and others were big).
SB No, it's a shame. We played there but not so much.
GH Well, and then Theyr developed...
SB Yes, I have been in three bands; Theyr, Kukl and Sugarcubes,
but Theyr was the most insane of them all. It was a sort of group of
people around the band, kind'of a family or 'cult' and it all went
haywash when Jaz Coleman and Youth (from Killing Joke) came.
GH Why ?
SB We though we were about to make it and our gurus (Hilmar Orn
Hilmarsson and Gudni Runar Agnarsson) filled us with information
that we were about to make it in the UK. We had too high hopes
and it all ended in tears when nothing came out of this. Personal
relationships were also quite unstable.
GH Was there some seriousness behind those ideologies that you
adapted ?
SB Yes, but no. The song Rudolf was supposed to be criticism, but
was really interpreted as we were nazis. We also adopted some
nazi things like the clothing, but we were never real nazis. We
were just showing off, just like today.
GH Kukl came next. A band totally against other things happening
at that time. How did you all feel at the time ?
SB Kukl was a supergroup that was originated for a radio program,
we liked working together. It was a good feeling opposing every-
thing. We were crusaders at the time. We were on a musical
crusade and it was healthy for us, after that I didn't need more crusading.
GH How about the republishing of the Theyr and Kukl stuff ?
SB I've given up trying to find the Theyr originals. Magnus (singer)
prepared a Theyr collection for Enigma, but the master tapes got lost
and Magnus says he doesn't know where they are. Therefore we'll take
unused LP's and put over on DAT and then published.
GH All on one CD ?
SB No, Mjotvidur Maer on one and the small records on another.
GH What about Kukl ?
SB We'll probably do something similar, at least we will do The Eye.
I dont know if we'll bother to redo Holidays in Europe, it's not worth
it.
GH About Sugarcubes..
SB Hallelujah..
GH Was it a surprise how big the Sugarcubes became ?
SB Yes, at first. We tried to look at is as a comical thing. The same
people we'd been talking to as Kukl were now very interested in the
Sugarcubes even with two of the same singers. We just played pop-
cliches and it worked.
GH It made you laugh ?
SB Yea, we laughed for a long time.
GH Then it became a routine ?
SB Yes routine is not healthy. It was bad for the moral when the
band was working for some payments in advance, and things being
decided in advance. It's really a miracle we can still talk together
without needing lawyers.
THE FUTURE:
GH Why are you going abroad now ?
SB We have been planning this for over a year, me and my wife.
It became clear about last Easter where we'd be going, to Madison
(in Wisconsin). I am happy with that, seems quiet and the culture
is OK, I just feel like taking care of the home and relaxing.
GH What's the purpose of the trip ?
SB My wife's doctoral studies.
GH And you just take care of the baby ?
SB Yes and the home.
GH What about the drums, are they going into the closet ?
SB No, no. I have learned in the last year that the better I do as
Bogomil Font the more I feel like a drummer. The drummer in me
has been resting for over a year.
GH What do you want to drum, with what kind of band ?
SB I've got lots of ideas. Like playing ethnical music, sampled and
looped, played over and trampled on, an experimental idea - I'm
doing something with this on my computer. I'm also interested in
working something in Madison. I know Butch Vig (Nirvana) has his
studio in Madison and I have contacted him and others I dont want
to name.
GH Are you interested in playing session ?
SB No absolutely not. I'm very interested in playing with some good
rappers. I want to do something I haven't done before, but I'll lay low to
begin with and enjoy relaxing.
GH According to the popularity shouldn't you have started Bogomil
Font earlier ?
SB Yes ..but I dont take Bogomil seriously. He's kind of a character
from a play. But many others seem to take him seriously and that's
good.
GH Did is surprise you to have the best selling album (in Iceland) ?
SB Yes, I had the feeling this was a kind of a 'cult' thing, similar to
Jupiters (another Icelandic band). But it seems we get through to
a bigger crowd. It seems to be the main party music for 16 year olds
and also for Theyr parents. That's of course very unhealthy. Not much
punk in that.
GH Talking about punk, how does the old punk rocker feel here in
Amma Lu (a club for older people) ?
SB Quite good really. Like I said I dont take Bogomil Font seriously
and want to remind of my opening statement when we walked into
this place. I am surprised that I never get stagefright when I stand
in front and sing those songs. As a drummer on the other hand I often
get a big stagefright, there I feel I have more responsibility, I'm not
responsible for this Bogomil character. This can be explained psycho-
logically in many ways!

It's on the 28th to 29th of May in Vilna Lettland.
There's gonna be Cocteau Twins, the Fall
and Roovel Oorbik are playing (+ local bands).
Cheap trips to Tallin are probably most feasible
(ca. 300 FIM, 270 SEK) from Helsinki and then
a cheap bus or hitch-hike to Vilna.
Is anyone interested ?

Sweetheart is playing next Saturday in Semifinal (Helsinki).

As far as I can remember, we were taught at school that actually
Scandinavia consists only of Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Fennoscandia
(sp?) is the three above countries and Finland. At least this is what
I think, but I'm no authority on this.
Anyway, the whole question is rather academic anyway... :-)
Now that I'm posting, can anyone give any opinion on the Stina
Nordenstam (sp?) album "And She Closed Her Eyes"? I've seen the video
"Little Star" on MTV quite often, and I've developed a sort of liking
to it, as I have a weak spot for female singers... I assume that her
music might not be very 'indie', but at least it is 'Scan'...

No and yes, geographically and geologically Scandinavia is only Norway,
Sweden and Denmark (part of Denmark). The name is beleved to mean
'Foggy island' or something similar and has to do with early cartographers
who thought Nor & Swe were an island isolated from the mainland (they
didn't bother to check the Cola Peninsula connection). Finland was on the
other hand clearly connected to Novgorod (now Russia) and Jotland also.
But the rest of Denmark was/is small islands who then belonged to the big
one ('Foggy island').
But it is still a mistery why they thought the people who initiated the name
thought the island was foggy (or misty).
Iceland is very far from being close to being close to Scandinavia (theoretically)
but culturally we are quite close.
The name Nordic has often been used for all
these countries, Fennoscandia has also been used (by biologists) to discribe the
common biology and also common bedrock of the region.

I have always assumed that Iceland is considered part of Scandinavia
because of its (once) close ties with Denmark. Are there any 'friendly'
members of this mailing list that live in Iceland? (when I say 'friendly',
I actually mean someone who will post things instead of just reading

By the way... I'm new to this list, just subscribed today... I'm also
interested in hearing anyones opinions on Stina Nordestam, and will she get
as big as Bjork ?

Although you have never said this before (while I've been around) I had
actually guessed :-)
Are you permamantly living outside Iceland? or are you in Finland just for
your studies at university?
You are definetly the most talkative and friendly Icelander I've seen on
the nets, but I actually meant someone 'living' in Iceland... the reason
being that I will be going to Iceland in June this year, and I was hoping
to meet a few Icelandic people while out there. I'm planning to go
sometime round the 15th June... Bjork will be doing a show there on the
19th.
I've got several questions to ask about Iceland before I go... but I'll ask
that in blue-eyed-pop later.

Do I understand correctly if you go for 1 day it is 55 SEK and for three
days it is 220 SEK? How much of a crowd goes to these shows? 100, 1000,
or >= 10000? How big a town is Kristiansand? (I see it is the closest
in Norway to Germany.) Does one camp there or must one find lodging?
(I guess one can camp, no?) Finally, is getting tickets a problem? (In
crowded Germany it is a big problem.)
I have never been north of Kiel (except Scotland) so I am a bit ignorant
of these thing. Can someone fill me in?

I can't answer any of these questions, so I leave them to the norwegian
