things record labels, some bands, concert venues... not very 'indie',

Well, did anyone go? If so, how was it? I saw them, well, some
months ago here in Tampere, and their gig was really exciting! They
played "Let's Lynch The Landlord" by Dead Kennedys as encore, great
stuff.
Also their mini-album was rather good, a bit similar to Popsicle, but
by not too much to be an imitation only (though that wouldn't be too
bad either :-)
Have they any new releases?

Is 20 years the usual age limit for clubs in Sweden?

Thanks to Erik and Petter for posting the West Side Fabrication and
Bear Quartet discographies!
But: do I have to understand that there are no forthcoming albums,
EP's or singles by Bear Quartet?? What are they doing? I seem to
remember that Petter wrote sometime in the summer that they had played
their *only* live gig for the whole year (or the rest of the year, or
something like that anyway) just then, on some festival...or have I
been dreaming? Or rather, having a nightmare...
If this is so, this band are *real* slackers! :-)

I haven't heard them either, but I saw them live a couple of times,
when they were still signed to Poko Rekords, and as far as my vague
recollections of their live act are anything to count for, I recommend
you to avoid the first album. After their deal with Poko came to the
end, the lead singer and the main songwriter (at least as far as I
understand) left the group, which then went through some
transformations (at least their style of music changed, though the
remaining members are the same, I guess), and became what they are
today.
I also seem to remember that the "Mould" album which will be released
on West Side might be one of their self-financed albums? But don't
quote me on that.

Subject: Larry and the Lefthanded live!
To end my mail flood of tonight, I'll dish out a couple of words about
the best live gig (are there other kinds of gigs? :-) I saw just a
while ago - Larry and the Lefthanded at the local I-Klubi club.
It was the first time I saw this band, of which I in fact don't know a
lot about (but I'm sure Sami will give us the info in a couple of
days), so I didn't know quite what to expect. I had been told that
they are a 'garage band', whatever that means. Anyway, pretty soon as
they stepped on the stage it became a bit clearer: mid-60's
rhythm'n'blues/rock/pop (a la early Yardbirds & Animals - not "House
Of The Rising Sun" though :-) with some surf overtones, especially in
their instrumentals, all spiced with loads of massive guitar and organ
playing.
Well, I guess that my vague definition does not really do justice to
them, and perhaps it will not say anything to anybody, but that's what
it sounded like to me.
They were really fun to watch, their stage presence was very
unpretentious and they seemed to enjoy their playing a lot.
Unfortunately the crowd didn't go quite as crazy as they (or 'we')
should, but maybe next time they play in Tampere they will bring the
house down.
They have a 7" EP out on Trash Can Records, and some new release on
the way, the names escape me, but it's 1:37 am and I should go to
sleep...
Anyway, check them out for good time.

I just bought the new Puffin CD yesterday, and what can I say... It's
well worth the 145 SEK I paid for it. I have listened to it three times
only yet, so I won't write more about it yet, but I will as soon as I

For example: On 'Carnivore' - there is a track called Medium Cool.
but no track that is called 'Carnivore'.
But there is an EP called 'Medium Cool EP'.
- And now on 'Soundtrack' - there is a track called
'Carnivore' but no track called 'Soundtrack'.
Should we expect an EP soon with a track called
'Soundtrack'? Hmm.... :)
There is also an internet address printed on the inner sleeve of the CD
by the way: puffin@ling.umu.se. I suspect that it is Magnus as well?

Subject: Other New CDs out
Roaming through the "new CDs" bin at the local store here, I found all
new releases from West Side (all but Mufflon 5's new though) - but I
couldn't afford them all. I had to settle for Puffin and Souls (not on
West Side though) new CDs.
The "Penniless People of Bulgaria" 'Mould' caught my interest though, as
they had one in the used CD bin as well for 79 SEK, but I didn't have
time to listen to it, and didn't buy it. Could someone tell me what they
sound like? I need to know, because 79 SEK is right for my wallet.
(It had the "Poko Records" logo on it, as well as West Side's, so I guess
they have only been licenced to distribute it in Sweden? Or something.)
Reviews on Souls and Puffin will be posted as soon as possible,
though I can say right away that I recommend them both highly.

Uhm, well, the truth is this: BQ have all gone batty, and decided that
they have - up to now - been doing the wrong thing altogether. They now
conceive themselves as a pure recording studio act, and are well into
their eighth week of recording film music. Reliable sources have revealed
that Jari spent two of those weeks tuning his guitar.

I hesitate to contradict you, but to my mind they're just severely
disturbed. ;-) (And thank God for that!)
Anyway: there *will* be a full-length release from BQ soon. That is,
once they've agreed on a conductor and an orchestra to perform their
work. :-)
Meanwhile, why not check out the new Puffin album, "Soundtrack"? :-)

Subject: the Bear Quartet...
Sorry to say that I've only got a lot of rumours and no facts, but this summer
Matti Alkberg said that they had recorded about 90 mins of demos.
And he said that there was going to be a full-length CD sometime around
Christmas 1994. He also said they were going to release a 7" or was it a 12"
on Sticky Fingers in the UK, a split with Puffin, Blithe and A Shrine... The
BQ track on the split Ep/single should be 'Capital Breath'. And yes, the show
they did at Skelleftea's 'Trastocksfestivalen' was their first gig for the
year and apparently their last for '94 aswell..
Their ordinary 2nd guitarist, Johan Forsling were _not_ playing that gig, he
was (temporarely???) replaced by Kristofer Astrom from Fireside. However, all
the stuff Matti told to me, was while he was v/ drunk and so was I so it's not
too reliable. :P
Johan Forsling, btw, is studying at here at LuTH (Lulea not Lund ;) )
Maybe that's why he's left... or has he left??? :)

So, I thought I'd contribute with some comments on a concert I went to this
weekend. Seems like it has become a trend among new bands to pick their names
from the almanack: previously we've seen Elvira, Yvonne, and Hardy Nilsson,
and now here's Kent as well. They played at Studion, a great place which I
used to go to some 10 years ago when bands like Imperiet were the big thing.
I'm happy to see that Studion has been reborn as a concert venue, and there's
a lot of good bands beeing booked. A few weeks ago I went there to see Salad
put on a great show.
Anyway, Kent... Someone said they reside in Eskilstuna, which I can neither
confirm nor deny. So far they haven't released any records, but a friend who
works at the BMG record label had heard a demo which she said was just terrific,
so we had to go and check them out. I didn't know what to expect from them, but
it appeard that they owe a lot to Popsicle and Bob Hund. They had a sound that
was very close to the latter, but without their charm. There were constant
changes in the tempo, from the low-voiced to explosive guitar cascades. Not bad
at all but we've heard it before. Many of the kids in the crowd seemed to be
familiar with the songs, and happily jumped along. The big drawback with Kent
is the nerd who sings, and a lot of people were really disturbed by his manners.
Dressed in black suit and black tie, and generally acting as he sang with an
early 80's gloom band, and not a mid-90's guitar pop band. Kind of sucks IMHO.
If you're into the Swedish indie scene you should check Kent out, and you're
probably going to like them though they're not unique in any way.

Well, as I rambled a couple of days ago, I haven't heard their

abroad, would there? Anyway, what I'm wondering is the "Poko Rekords"

Anyway, if the CD has a picture of the band, and it features four
guys, one of which resembles vaguely Frank Black or Bob Mould (ie. a
bit on the fat-ish side as far as weight is concerned), then don't buy
it - it's probably their debut. Otherwise, if you like Pixies, you
could go for it. But don't blame me, if it's crap :-)

I haven't been down to the store since I bought Puffin and Souls,
so I haven't checked it out yet, but I'm positive that it said
something about Poko Rekords. I hope I get a chance to confirm it
by next week though.

The cover is a blur of colours. I took it for some ambient collection
or something when I saw it in the bin, but the name and A West Side
cleared my head a bit, though it really looks like it would fit into
the ambient bins somewhere. :) I'll have a listen to it before I
(might) buy it anyway though.

I have made a try to get the cords out of Slow
by Popsicle, but since I haven't played the guitar
for so very long, I didn't succed very well.

Hi!
When in Tampere, do as the people of Tampere do - in other words go to
the YO-talo club next Saturday for the third "Popstock" festival
featuring five more or less great bands: Swellheads, Pansies, Circle,
Kitchen Sink and Aknestik. A good mixture of poppy noise and noisy
pop.
Also, both Pansies and Aknestik have a new CD out. The Pansies album
is said to be the most expensive debut album on Poko Rekords (which is
the most established 'indie' label in Finland, so established that in
fact I don't think it's very 'indie' any longer, technically nor
attitude-wise).

Subject: Popsicle + Eggstone
Hi all,
Saw Popsicle and Eggstone do a fantasticly weird gig in Lund last saturday...
Eggstone started, playing two Popsicle songs! (True + Undulate)
Then Popsicle entered the stage, and played two Eggstone songs! (Can't remember
which, I must have been drunk or something...:)
After that they both played their own songs for about 30 minutes each, and
finally joined up together for the encores, playing two rather unbelievable
covers - Tainted Love and Self Control...!
The show was a benefit show for Popsicle who appearantly owe a French insurancy
company something like 40000 SKr for totalling a car when they were down in
France to shoot a video a few months ago. Or something like that...

PS. Highly recommend the new Puffin album. One of the few albums this year that
hasn't been a big disappointment.

Puffin, yeah, definitely go and check them out. Haven't heard the
new album so it's hard to say if they're still the same but at
least on their _Carnivore_ long-player they displayed a great
sense of melody and an astonishing ability to vary their sound
from one song to another. It's a wonderful mixture of different
influences, grungy pop to My Bloody Valentine to some freaky
jazz touches. Very cool. If only they'd come over to Finland
to play...
