I'd definately recommend the Honey Is Cool / Yvonne gig at Gino
on tuesday. You won't be disappointed.

I'm just disappointed I can't be there! :-(

23rd of February... Browsed through the record shop's release
list t'day.

I had to buy the Flashlight Monster EP from Ahlens (A large
Supermarket kind of shop...yuk) as in the "real" record shop they
had sold out of the EP. Not so surprising, as the music fans
around here seem very local patriotic. =)

I've only listened to it once, and I think the title track
is very good. Amen.

This is _great_ news! I don't know about the Bear Quartet, but a new album
from Cardigans sounds great! I really love Emmerdale.

About Cardigans, they played four or five times here in Lund last year, but
somehow I managed to miss all of the gigs... :( But since there is a new
album coming out this soon, I expect they'll come back quite soon too!

They have a new album out - that's right. I saw it today when I was
looking for the latest Slowdive (where _is it_ ?!), but I didn't
have time to listen to it.

On the bright side - they're playing here on saturday (saw them
huge posters all over the university today) so I'll probably be able
to write more about them after that (if someone reminds me that is :))
I'll also try to dig up any reviews that I might have around here
about the new album.

The Bear Quartet - Everybody Else (A West Side Fabrication) review in
Dagens Nyheter, Wednesday february 15th:

"Bear Quartets new CD a beauty"
There must be something apart from the multinational record companies
with head offices in Kista and Sundbyberg. There has to some other kind
of music; a lesser profitable one, careful. And it is not until now,
after many years, that small record companies outside Stockholm can
be reconed with as an opposite force.

A West Side Fabrication in Skellefte} counts these days as an established
alternative. Fact is, they released more swedish records during 1994 than
the huge BMG did. Just a thing like that.

The Bear Quartet from Lule} is what West Sides responsible Jocke Wallstr|m
choses to put most of his money on. Their new album, Everybody Else is a
beauty. Bear Quartet had enough time on their hands for their fourth album
this time, the other three were recorded and released during the same year.
The things that used to be distant and awkward have faded out. The tracks
have space instead of low-mixed song and guitar-walls. Everything is very
unobtrusive and melancholic. String- and brass-sections were hired to make
 it complete.

Bear Quartet's singer, Matti Alkberg, a published poet with a strange
geniousness. He dins and sings here and there. It always hits the spot
except for the few tracks he tries pure melodic singing. He should be
 harder.

The guitarrist, Jari Haapalainen makes every track special with his
melodies that winds song and melody into melancholic expressions. This is
one of Sweden's best bands. And their records sell in about 1.000 copies.
 That's something that is strange.

 ------
There's a picture of the bands as well with the text:
"Small gets big. The record company A West Side Fabrication is nowadays an
established alternative to the big ones. Bear Quartet (to the right), is
their number one investment and one of Sweden's best bands. Everything is
very unobtrusive and melancholic on their new CD."

There are also reviews of Waterbug's "Supercalifragilisticexpialicocious"
(also on West Side) and Confusions' "Being Young" (on Massproduktion).
If anyone wants me to type those in as well, let me know.

Now, does anyone know anything about Waterbug? Both the reviews I read
mentioned that they're more like Bob Hund than anyone else, and the
one in Nöjesguiden said that they kind of occupy the ground between
Bob Hund and Pavement, which to me translates are 'perfect'...

Robert, still sent on 'Onni' though %-)

I find these lines a little strange, especially the way it was formulated
in the original article, the lyrics are usually written by
Peter Nuottaniemi, their bassist, and Matti use to be credited for
the lyrics too, as most of the time the lyrics are rewritten to be
"singable". But yes Matti has got some book(s?) out with poetry.
Haven't read it/them tho., but I've heard one poem and it was to
say the least a little bit over my head.

Yours illiterate, Petter.

The Bear Quartet - Everybody Else (A West Side Fabrication) record review
in Aftonbladet, friday february 17th, 1995.

 "Lule}bears with sure hit"
First I thought it was a vacuumcleanerrecord. But this bearquartet deserves
more attention than that. "It Only Takes A Flashlight..." is a sure hit.
A couple of other tracks are in the same division, "Everlast" and "I Never
Saw The Ban" for example. During -93, BQ released three albums. The follow-up
"Everybody Else" feels instead a bit too over-worked. Somewhere the
spontaneousness disappeared. There's lots of guitarpop with strings and
handclaps and the ones who distinguish themselves from the rest wins. A
weekend course in variation should do the trick for the Lule}bears.

Points: 3 "plus" out of 5.

I can't agree with you more. I didn't expect anything and I wasn't
disappointed at all. They were great. I talked a bit with the singer
afterwards and he told me their full-length CD would be released next
month. I asked why they weren't signed to West Side, and he told me
they had sent four demos to Jocke (the owner) but he had rejected them
each time, so now they'd gotten tired of West Side and went to another
label who signed them on the spot (can't remember which one though).
If they play live somewhere near you, don't miss them.

Sonic Surf City played a secret gig at VSR ("Valla Saucer Rennen", a
three-day party here at the university) on thursday, which was really
good. (I managed to see _three_ bands on the same night; Red Heads,
Tamarinds and Sonic Surf City, on different locations). They didn't
have the best stage though, so the sound quality wasn't the best. They
made one extra number, and should have made another but the drummer felt
sick and had to lie down ;). I talked a bit with Ola Hermansson (the owner
of the Ceilidh Records label) who also plays and sings in the band. Bands
signed to the Ceilidh label are among others Cardigans, Suredo and
Stevepops. Sonic Surf City are signed to Stockholm Records .
Well, anyway, I mentioned this mailing list, and asked if he didn't want
to join (as I know he's got an email address here at the health
university), but his Mac was on repair right now, but he'd get it back
in a couple of weeks and would e-mail me then. He was surprised (but
happy about) hearing about a Scandinavian Indie mailing list though,
and gave me Stevepops email address (stevepops@astrakan.hgs.se). I'll
mail them in a second and tell them about the list as well ;).

Should we try to get Linda Norrman (linda.norrman@expressen.se) on this
list as well? Anyone?

Good for them I'd say. I mean, West Side is a good label and all,
but I'd hate for them to have a monopoly on all the good bands in
Sweden...

BTW, is there no indie label in Sweden that would still release
cool 7" vinyl?

As I'm sure most of you have noted, this list isn't exactly the most
active one around... Getting some bands and zine makers and indie
labels on the list could be the very thing to liven up things here.
Email is so wide-spread these days that I'm sure most of the
'industry types' (okay, ignore that) are now online as well. If there
just was a way to get the info to them...

Umm, I don't know who she is but if you reckon she might have something
of interest to say, or that she might be interested in what we have

Subject: A proper introduction

Things have finally cooled down a bit in my life so her is a proper
intruduction of myself.
My name is Mats Wallstedt and I'm studying computer- and information-
technology at the university of Linkoping, Sweden. I've been a fan of
"alternative", "indie" music ever since i saw a compilation by Siouxie
And The Banshees on T.V. (many years ago) I'm really glad of that
because that took me away from being a Kiss fan all my life. :)
Last year me and a friend ran a radioshow ("Psychocandy") on the student
radio station, focusing on "alternative" music (can't find a better word),
an excellent opportunity to listen and present new bands. We tried to
present a local band every week and play a lot of demos. Our listmaster
was one of my faithfull listerners (I think). I also arranged special
"indie"-parties at the student hangout, trying to help new bands to play.
Some of the interviews done by our listmaster is from those evenings
(great stuff chief!!). These days I'm not so involved in these things
but It gave me a lot of good connections to people who are.
My musical tastes range from Swedish pop (of course) to hard industrial
music like Ministry, combined with mellow things like Red House Painters.
It's almost easier to name music that I dislike.
Well that's a little bit about myself and I'm happy to be on the list!!

Question: Does anyone have, or know somebody who has, the first record by the
Danish group "HOW DO I". I've been looking for it a couple of years. Even a
tape recording will do. Many thanks in advance.

I suppose you're talking about the Submarine album. Don't have it myself, but
it seems like every time I go to a second hand record store here in Sthlm, I
see that CD sitting around in the bins. So it is available, at least up here.

I've just started to add indie bands to the WWW pages of this list
(http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/), and first to get their own page is
Puffin. Not completed yet though, but all cd's are there with pictures
and some links to interviews and e-mail. Check it out if you have WWW
access, and let me know what you think.

Next to be added was The Bear Quartet with a link to Burrito's TBQ
discography, plus a scan of the cover of the new CD "Everybody Else"
that was released on February 23rd 1995. Articles and photos will follow.

"Submarine" is not their first album (as I expect the person who asked
already know), it's their second. It is one of my favourite scandinavian
albums of all time (along with Carnivore, Lacquer and Cosy Den), and I can
warmly recommend it for anyone who happens to stumble over a copy.

The first album is called "Drum Fake Drum" or something like that, and was
only released on vinyl. I have never seen a copy, and I doubt I ever will...
It's supposed to be very Buzzcocks-punky.

The stuff they've released after Submarine is IMHO totally pointless, and should
be avoided. Saw two minutes of them live at last years Roskilde festival too,
and it was just awful. Can't believe it's the same band, really.

A group called CARAWAY is playing at the
local university/student place this thursday. They're from Hultsfred
and were described to be playing "happy pop". Anyone know more about
them? Mats? More info would be great! Anyone?
