I'd just like to say that the usual address for the Scandinavian Indie

usual address (http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/scan.html) then use
the alternative (http://sf.www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/scan.html).

Oops.. I now see that I forgot the ~chief part of the address in the

know anyway. :)

Hi,
I just wanted to add to the discussion (confusion? ) by telling that
I'll get in for free at Lollipop Stockholm, 'cause I'll cover it for the
fanzine "Pop0ga", so if you're some kind of writer, it might not cost 380
Skr at all, afterall.

Hej everyone, I'm Chris from the States (Baltimore, to be quite exact),
and since you mentioned this Crash Worship, it reminded me that I saw
this band, and actually ran sound for them about 4 years ago. They are
from San Francisco (I think; at least I know it's somewhere in Northern
California), and were passing thru Baltimore to play a show in this old
abondoned brewery that had been converted into an underground "club" of
sorts....my band played one night, and we also ran sound for some of the
other bands playing there over a 2-week period (2 notable bands were
Coffin Break and Norman Bates & the Showerheads).

Crash Worhip....let me tell you about Crash Worship!! The people are
deranged! They came in, and while warming up, the guitarist made the most
horrifying, loud, evil sound I've EVER heard in my life. I'm not exactly
sure what he was playing thru, but it was some sort of tube amp, but from
a distance, it didn't even look like it was an amp meant for an instrument!
I'm telling you, this sound was *beyond* hellish.....screeching,
distorted; I can't even put it in words. Let me just say that this guy's
guitar tone (actually all he made was noise) made Helmet, Clutch, Cop
shoot cop, Slayer, Pantera, whoever you want to name sound like as tame as
Judy Collins.

And the performance: well, it didn't last too long, as it was sorta
overshadowed by some Crash Worship member who specialized in
swinging around in a circle, a flaming auto hubcap (that's right, he lit a
hubcap on fire!) from a rope. Then he lit firecrackers and basically
threw them at the (very thin) audience. Sometime after that, the band was
reprimanded and then they did an impromptu "protest" jam session on the
floor in front of the stage which consisted of tribal drum patterns. Everyone
stood around looking dumbfounded, waiting for the security to throw them
out, which they eventually did.

In spite of all this, I kinda liked them.

Thought they was from Texas... Mhhh maybe I have I wasted memory.
Missed them whem they played here in denver in late April, though Tribal
industrial seems quite appealing to me. Brings "Les Tambours des
Bronx" and their shows on Roskilde in '92 on my mind. But how should I
know since I havent heard Crash Worship... *-)

Nope, they are from California, but LA I think.

I've seen Les Tambours and I own three albums with Crash Worship, and
believe me... CW blows the frenchmen away any day of the week.

Hypnotic tribal drum patterns, screeching metallic noise, fire works,
naked people, wine... all this and more you'll get at their gigs...
Grrrrr, now I'm *really* pissed that I missed them at their first (and
perhaps only) European tour.

If others are into this tribal sorta sound (but minus the industrial
aspect), I might suggest a couple of Baltimore bands: Monkeyspank, and
All Mighty Senators. Monkeyspank had 3 drummers, 2 bass players, and a
singer/guitarist and played crunch/funk with INTENSE tribal patterns,
like a more underground, more rhythmic, and scarier Jane's Addiction.
Live, their power equalled Godflesh (so a Dutch friend of mine who was
visiting, and saw them with me, said). All Mighty Senators plays a kinda
psychedelic funk with often a drummer and another percussionist, very
very rhythmic and tribal. Their live shows often have dancing 10" high
stick puppets, slide shows, gogo dancers, totally out-there costumes, and
on occasion, fire-breathing. Incredibly visual band just taking it out to
the edge. If yr ever in Baltimore, check out AMS (Monkeyspank, alas, is
mo more, but has stuff out). Anyway, when I saw the Crash Worship "show"
I spoke of earlier, I just remember thinking how AMS and Monkeyspank both
did the tribal thing better.

I have to agree on Silverchair and Veruca Salt. Silverchair was the
biggest surprise for me, though my friends had heared about them
before. What a voice, and only seventeen! I was stunned. Veruca Salt -
well, I expected something special and I got it. :) They're unable to
do a bad performance. Ok, my favourites then:

1. The Cure - wet, sandy and sweaty on the first row next to the stage
I really could have cried. Yeah.
2. Velvet Belly - Wow! If you're going to Hultsfred, _do not_ miss them!
I was gone and there at the same time. They really
made me feel like I had walked into a Slowdive gig.
3. Suede - I know, I know. But it was a fantastic concert. I can't help
it, Brett's voice is a wonder beyond belief.
4. Dizzy Miss Lizzy - Big surprise! Never heard them before (!). Made
the festival-start-feeling tingle in my head.
5. Downset - The toughest concert I've been to. A friend of mine walked
out of there with two blue eyes. The pit was a living
             nightmare. :)
6. Ice-T & Body Count - Tough, hard and full of moral talk between
the music, how good we here in Europe live.
Yeah, ok. The pit was pretty tough. One of
my friends stayed in it for 10 seconds and
                        then left.

I can go on, but I think I'll stop there.

Biggest disappointments:

1. Biohazard stoned or drunk, failing to do a worthwile gig.
2. Whale. They're a lot more fun on a smaller venue/stage. This was
way too big. Schyffert made a fool of himself shouting "Stockholm".
3. Cranberries. What were the organizers thinking of?! The GREEN stage?
They needed the ORANGE one! Also the bad schedule having Cranberries,
Oasis, Veruca Salt and whatnot at almost the same time with the
longest distance between the stages (if you wanted to see all three).

Of course! Velvet Belly, Pantera, Mouth, Cinnamon, Cardigans, Ash, Black
Grape, Dizzy Miss Lizzy, Honey Is Cool, Sindy Kills Me,
Shredhead, Souls and Tiamat (so far) will almost make it worth
the money. :) Now all we need is The Charlatans, Stone Roses,
Cranes, Catherine Wheel, Verve and Poster Children and I'll
           KILL to go there. :)

Hello there!

I just bought a ticket for the Stone Roses gig in Tampere, taking
place on July 31st at the larger venue of the Tullikamari club. The
price was not bad, 95 Fmk.

Does anyone have any idea if there will be a support band?

In addition to this, I think they are playing two gigs at Tavastia
club in Helsinki - the night before Tampere, and then again the night
after the gig here.

So, all you Roses fanatics out there should start getting the plane
tickets now! :-)

Hi again,

last week I posted a question about the new Popsicle EP. Now after
having seen them live (for the second time in my life) at
Trastockfestivalen last weekend, I went and bought the CD.

As it was mentioned already earlier (I think), "Histrionics" (the
song) is a remix, but all the other three songs (Soul Lacquer Drug,
Mayfly and Smooth, if memory serves) are sort of Unplugged-ish
acoustic versions!

Actually they (the boys in Silverchair; Daniel Johns, Chris Joannou
and Ben Gilles) are only 15 or 16 (15 if you believe the Australian guy
I met at Roskilde, 16 if you believe Slitz - the magazine (but why should
you believe Slitz...)). Anyway, they are born in 1979, so it's kind of
impossible for them to be 17. :)

Have you seen them live before? The concert at Roskilde was good, but
absolutely not fantastic in my humble opinion. Their concert in Lund
in April however was fantastic. What a show! Anybody else here who was
there?

I couldn't agree more, but I guess we can't complain about they having too
many good bands! :)

Of course, where it was _really_ happening was Skellefteaa... I dunno,
looking back at the programme I'm shocked at how many bands we missed.
Especially Salt -- but anyway, what we did see was pretty good...

Selected highlights then:

Bob Hund -- headlined the first 'night' (it's always morning in
Norrland, you know), and were stunning as usual. I'm a fan alright,
but they really do seem to be in a class of their own. Nobody else
I've seen is making the same sort of music, ripping to shreds all the
standard indie/rock/pop ideas of what this sort of music should sound
like. The new songs seem more taut than the old ones, and the
energy that Thomas and Conny put into the vocals and lead guitar
respectively is almost frightening. 'Min Trampolin' finished the
set, and is incredibly long, but like 'Det skulle vara la"tt' you
hardly notice the time passing. For the older songs, the moshpit
was bigger than for any of the other acts on the main stage, and
crammed full of happy faces...

The Bear Quartet -- were pretty good too, Matti Alkberg being as much
fun too watch as to listen to, throwing his guitar into the audience
right at the beginning... They did a selection of old stuff and
tracks from 'Everybody Else', plus, to fill in for some instrument
problems, a truly awful impromptu cover of the Stone Roses 'Made of
Stone'.

Blissful -- were dogged by poor sound balance, their clarinettist
completely inaudible. Nevertheless they stole the show on Saturday
afternoon, getting a very warm response which they seemed quite
surprised by. They play a jazzy sort of indie pop, midway between
early TBQ and the Cardigans, but with a bigger variety of rhythm,
vocal style and tone colour than either. Two singers, sometimes
alternating, sometimes together, clever lyrics, and a flawless sense
of what makes a good tune. They are bloody brilliant.

Popundret -- were the other band that made me stand open-mouthed
with amazement. I knew nothing about them before, and wasn't
expecting Magnus (?) the lead singer's glorious rich voice, like
a happier Morrissey, gliding round brilliant songs like 'I say no'
with strong noise-melody backing from and all-star lineup behind
him -- lead singers from Stardog on bass and A Shrine on guitar.

Broder Daniel -- a close second to Bob Hund for dramatic performance
and entertainment. I don't like their music much, but Henrik Berggren
has got charisma of a weird sort in bucketloads. 'Luke Skywalker' is
a 'How soon is now' for the nineties; do you laugh or cry? is he for
real? In the end, they are just spectacular, the other band members
in cool contrast to Henrik's anarchic dancing and tuneless but
engaging singing.

Briefly, Puffin were impressive and fun to watch, as were Blithe and
Cinnamon; Optical Blue were good but ultimately far too remeiniscent
of the Cocteau Twins. The Penniless People of Bulgaria were more
rockist than most, but have a nice line in three-man vocals; Garp were
derivative but at least sang in Swedish, Waterbug were embarrassing
and just downright disappointing. We caught only the last of Mufflon
5's numbers: what sounded like a country cover, something really
really glorious that made us bitterly regret not seeing the rest of
their set. The Jayhawks had better watch out.

A truly fantastic weekend then...

Robert

Okay, okay. I made a mistake.

Never really. I tried a couple of years ago in Stockholm, but it was
impossible to get tickets.

That's true, though they could have planned the whole thing a bit better
(or could they?). Anyway, I'm glad I managed to see/hear something of all
three.

Hmm, I'm not the greatest Levellers fan... :)

I meant to add a couple of gossip items and other stuff from
Tra"stockfestivalen:

...Thomas O"berg from Bob Hund says that no one knows yet when the next
album will come out, but they've starting recording anyway...

...the first full-length Blissful album will come out in the autumn
(would you believe that Blissful _haven't played Stockholm yet_?
Scandal!)...

...Magnus Astro"m claimed not to have played for six months before
drumming with Puffin...

...Freda from Cinnamon threw out several handfuls of
cinnamon-flavoured chewing gum during their set, so the whole tent
smelt highly appropriate for a while...

...the Penniless People of Bulgaria announced that they come from
'the north-east part of Sweden that's called Finland'...

...Stickboy's audience contained at least three pairs of parents,
probably worried at the band being referred to in the festival
programme as the most 'tjejva"nlig' on offer...

                       Some Scandinavian Indie Net News
                       --------------------------------

 * The new WWW server at lysator is working, and working fine! You can
now use the old http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/scan.html address
without any worries again. (use it before the sf.www address).

 * The Lollipop pages are ready and up on the W3 pages. Article and
pictures can be found at http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/lollipop.html
or by just going through the Festivals 1995 pages from the main
page (and be able to check out the new Lollipop Middle page :) ).

 * Gig and Festival lists will _not_ be posted to the mailing list
from now on, _Unless_ someone/some people say they want them to.
Fresher and a lot better looking versions of the lists can be found
on the W3 pages under the "Who Plays Where and When" link from the
main page for the Gig lists (Guides) and Festivals In Sweden 1995
can be found (a lot nicer too) under the "Festivals 1995" link from
   the main page.

 * Scandinavian Indie is represented on MTV Text (Europe) on page
   262. Only the mailing list though (I have to send them the W3
   address too).

 * I hope you lucky people out there who are going to Lollipop in
Stockholm tomorrow and on saturday will report back to the list
during/after the festival, so we know what we're missing/we missed.
I'll watch Just D on the Internet at least, because I _want_ to
be there and need that festival feeling again. :)

I hope no-one missed the live concert with The Bear Quartet that was
broadcasted on the swedish national radio (channel P3) last night.
I would have posted info about it yesterday, but my internet provider's
modems didn't answer all day, and when they finally did, it was in
the middle of the concert. Anyway, I'll post info about it here, if
someone wants me to.

I did... :(

But I wasn't home anyway, I was at Tantog}rden watching Garmarna, and
they were great! Reminded me of how great Hedningarna were 5 years ago
or so...

PS. I you haven't already heard, Stone Roses and Pulp have been added to
    the Stockholm Lollipop lineup.
