I'd like to hear something with them, as (though not 100% sure yet) they
are playing here pretty soon. How would you describe their sound?

I have an opinion: They're great. :) They really kicked when playing here
a week ago. The queue to the place has never been as long as that night.
The band had to get us in themselves, or we would have missed the gig
_and_ the interview. They are really hyped, that's for sure, but I think
it's valid. They really hated the gig at the 15-year Slitz aniversary
last sunday by the way (one of 'em, I don't remember who, joined the
Bear Quartet when playing here yesterday and had a lot to say about it).
Z-Tv (Per Sinding-Larsen or whatever his name is) has blacklisted them
as well, because he (Per) did an interview at the party, which he was
told later could not be broadcasted, because they had talked about a (not
yet completed) deal with an american label. Everything could blow up in
their faces if they broadcasted the interview before the deal was made.
So he (Per) was mad as hell and said they (Fireside) were blacklisted.
Oh well.. enough rambling.

I agree, though if we're going to include West Side bands, we have to
select which ones. We can't include all of them, or the tape will be
two tapes.

Everyone agree with this? Myself, I'm not so sure.

Would be the best way to do it, I agree, but wouldn't it be more fun
to mix all of it into maybe two tapes? If someone's willing to make
one tape for each genre I'm all for it though. :)

Seems to be the big question. Couldn't we (the ones interested) make
sort of a "top ten tracks I'd like to see on the tape" and post it
to the list. Then we can go from there and decide what to do?

That is true. I'm not sure what to do about it though... Now when they
have 4 full-length CDs, Blithe have 3 full-lengths, and so on, what
track would one select? The favourite of course, but that is not an
easy task... Hmmmm.....

Also true. I have four West Side compilation CDs as of now. But on some
of them, like the 23enigma one, there are bands you can't find anywhere
else, like Backfisch, which just must be heard. The Blithe track on
that one is also one of their best IMHO.

That is something I've been wondering about myself. And it's not just
swedish bands! Cranes, Curve, Catherine Wheel, Chapterhouse, Charlatans..
the list just keeps growing.

I talked to Jocke (the West Side boss) who is going with TBQ on their
tour yesterday, and he told me they were taking it easy now. No plans
or anything, unfortunately, but he promised (?) they would release
something in the future though, so they have not split up or anything
like that, even though it sure sounded like it when he talked about
them.
If anyone's interested that is... :)

When asking them about that yesterday, they (and Jocke) said that
one shouldn't judge the album from the EP - and that they understand
if people don't like _one_ track on the EP (can't remember which one
though). I have to agree though after their gig where they played
a bunch of tracks from the new full-length as brilliant as ever.

WeCD 104 CD5 95 Blue All I Ever Do
WeCD 105 CD 95 The Bear Quartet Holy Holy
We?? 106 SW 95 The Bear Quartet Brown sweatshirt w/BQ Logo

WeTS 107 TS 95 The Bear Quartet White t-shirt w/TBQ on front

Jocke also said something about 108-110 being t-shirts/sweatshirts,
but he wasn't sure about it, so I didn't write it down. :-/
By the way - the "On The Outskirts..." compilation isn't meant for
the swedish market. It's something they are shipping outside these
borders. He was kind of surprised I found a copy, as it was released
in a small number of copies domestically (sp?).

Though yet unconfirmed, I think they have found a drummer, as they are
one of the planned bands to play here within the next few weeks (maybe
even this coming thursday). The student place here are planning the next
few months gigs right now, and therefor it's a bit hard to say, but
last I heard, either Mats or Loosegoats will play here on thursday.
Anyone heard Mats? I know they are from Malmoe, but that's about it.

Uh, the last I heard from them was back in May, when I was visiting
Tristan Bizarre in Tartu (he hasn't written to me since - I musta
scared him real bad:) They had just recorded some new tracks which
were supposed to be released as part of a full-length CD later this
year. I only heard them once but the impression I got was that it
sounded pretty amazing. They've steered away from the full-on dream
pop approach of their earlier recordings and incorporated some very
hip dancey elements to it as well - they now have a programmer
replacing their drummer and bassist. If only I got to hear the CD
soon...

1.Fireside's always been a great live band, even back when
their recorded material wasnt that great (their previous
record, fantastic four in my opinion is just a mediocre
album). However, now that Quicksand have broken up, I can
understand that american labels show interest for Fireside ;)
2.ZTV, they played Peter Siepen's show last week, playback.
In my opinion Fireside alone is more important for swedish
music than ZTV is, not that it says a lot. Value(ZTV)->0.
3.The Bear Quartet: One should not judge "Holy Holy" by listening
to the Tibet EP, but anyway, it's not an exiting album to me,
there's a few good songs tho.

Hmm, this sounds a bit alarming to me. When Slowdive disappeared, I
was kind of hoping that Bizarre would keep that section of my
music collection alive. Dance? Computer drums? I sure would like
to hear what they sound like today...

Yeah, I knew you'd think that, that was my first thought as well, but
when I heard the songs I liked them so much I figured, what the hell -
if these people want to branch out and develop their music in an
interesting and natural direction, well, I'm not going to give them
flak for it. The truth is the boys in the band mainly listen to
techno, ambient and jungle type stuff these days anyway...

About the tape chain, I can do an Icelandic tape or even
many of them, Im sure I'm the leading Icelandic music
collector on this list, since I am Icelandic myself and
have loads of gooood stuff.
I can also do a hardcore (LOUD) Finnish tape with some of
the Bad Vugum stuff.
I also have a fair collection of Baltic CDs'n'tapes.

No, of course not. I never screamed when Slowdive came out with
Pygmalion, and I guess I won't when I hear Mojave 3 either. It's
just a bit sad to see all them good swirling dreamy and guitar-
walled groups go down the drain. :(

There's an article on Loosegoats in the latest issue of Monitor. Appearantly
they now have distribution in the US, and a full length album is to be
expected before the snow melts.

Hello Everyone,
My name is Pete. I'm from California, and I visited Copenhagen many times.
However, I never really saw too many punk/indie clubs. I know there's
Loppen, Rust and Stenogade 30, but most of the clubs in town play Micheal
Jackson or something in the like. Is Copenhagen a center of Indie music or
am I just unaware of the underground clubs? Furthermore, I visited Malmo,
but I didn't know about any good clubs so I returned to Copenhagen.
It seems like like Indie music is more supported in Sweden; am I wrong? I
hope someone out there could inform me.
Lastly, I saw Superchunk in San Francisco on Saturday night, and they fully
ripped. They played good and hard.
Thank You

Ha ha. That is a very good question, but I think you're right,
because the band playing tomorrow here is listed as "Mutts".
Pronounce it, and voila, you're saying "Mats". I've been

Anyone record the live performace broadcasted on the swedish radio
channel P3 a week or so ago? I want to know what he sounds like!

This sounds remarkably interesting! I can't wait 'til they get here.
I'll get the complete gig list from the local university "place" tonight,
and I'll see when they are scheduled, so I can interview them. I've never
heard them though. Do they really sound like Archers of Loaf? Anyone have
their address?

Hmmm, I'll see them tonight. If they're good, I'll interview them. If not,
you all will know about it. :-/
Anyone know why the changed their name to "Mutts" ? Ok, it sounds the same
but... I want to know.

Subject: sammy?
hello there netters.
i went to see a concert last night and as it had scan-indie
content i though i'd share the concert with you..
without expecting it i got to see the swedish incarnation
of the great american band sammy last night. a bit rougher
but, it was sammy right from start to finish. sammy classics
like "three hearts" and "hi-fi killers" where both in there
and it was almost like one could hum along with the real
original sammy-lyrics too.. but the thing was that it wasn't
those two sammy-guys (luke and whatever the other guy's name
is) standing there doing a pavement ripoff. no the band was
no other than the hyped up *naked*. i had read that they
like bands like sebadoh, pavement and sammy but i didn't
expect them to sound *just* like those bands! at times it got
friggin' ridiculous! i mean, where should the fine line of
borrowing/stealing be drawn?
not that naked wheren't good, i'd love to see sammy for real,
but at times it was just so obvious that it almost got pathetic.
*but*, pay attention here, it didn't! because, naked did
really put on a good show, full of fun and humour, and that
is, to me, really what saved them from becomming total crap.
their(?) ;) songs were good and catchy and, again, the band
showed some great sense of humor.
overall, it was one of most fun and best shows put on
by a swedish band i've seen all year and if i wouldn't have
heard/known of sammy/pavement before the show i would definetly
been blown away! naked are, i think, releasing a record soon,
so if you are into pavement-stuff, go out and buy it. i can't
see you would be dissapointed.
anyway, sorry this tended to get so lengthy.

Maybe to prepare themselves for an international career! Maybe they wanted
an Englishman to be able to pronounce the name correctly (If an Englishman
saw the name Mats he would not say "Mutts")?
Or maybe they just thought it was a funny joke? Any better ideas out there?
Martin.
Ps. Isn't it great to talk about a band we almost haven't listened to? The
net surely provides an essential service. ;)

I got a goldmine of articles about them from a friend of mine, and sure
enough, that question was one of the first ones to be answered in there.
The reason they gave was that they didn't want to be accused of following
the "norm" other swedish bands have set like Kent and Yvonne, even though
they claim they were "first" (when speaking about the formentioned two).
They were really good live by the way. Really made the place tremble.
And me too. :) I never got a chance to do an interview though. :-(

Hi girls/guys!
You know (or not) I am the Hungarian guy in the scene :)
In replying to Martin (in time heheh..) : No. Szeged is by the river
Tisza. It is a bit easter than the Balaton.
I must notice here, that I may not answer for anyone immediately when
the letter arrives, because I have so short time for the net-stuffs
(oh, poor me) so I usually download the letters when my post reaches
500k. Anyway I think you, Martin are not so angry about the Balaton.
When was it? A month ago? ;-)
The real stuff I writing this letter for is I need a lyrics from a
song. It is not Swedish (nor Finnish - hi Finnish guys!) nor
independent, but you are the only ones I can ask about in the net.
I'm afraid in the Virtual Reality newsgroup noone can answer it.
The performer is Urge Overkill
and the title is Girl you'll be a woman soon.
I would be very pleased if you sent me that in a letter, but it would
be also far enough if you sent me the FTP address and the path to get
it. Thanx for your help.
Another thing.
There is no statistics for that but I think there are also girls not
only boys in the newsgroup. Most of the cases I can't decide the sex,
except some (eg. Erik - hi!) because I don't know the northern names.
(sorry guys, that's the truth)
So I hope there are also girls.
Because I'm looking for a penfriend. A Swedish girl penfriend.
Hi girls! A handsome, strong builded, clever, good hearted, brave
hearted, etc. etc. Hungarian boy is looking especcially for YOU!
:)))))))))) That was me. :))))))) Anyway, seriously I looking for a
nice girl, for you. I'm interested in learning Swedish a bit (I don't
want to take language exams), talking about music, school, life.
Boys: Is it not a "calling-out-line" ? Sorry if you feel is it not
the right advertisement in the right newsgroup.
Don't forget, the letter was started with the lyrics asking!
Bye!
Balazs the "conqueror" :)

Erik? I don't think I've seen a single post from a woman on this
list. Does this mean there aren't any, or are they just (sensibly)
lying low?

Sigh. For one thing this is not even vaguely relevant to scan-indie.
For another thing you've picked the wrong place. And for another, you
really, really don't want to start a net.romance. I've done two, and,
well, the real life sort are much better. ;)
ObScanIndie: I failed in my last two tries to get hold of nordic indie
stuff. Pet Sounds didn't have any Backfisch stuff (I haven't even
heard them yet) and as usual I couldn't find the last Aknestik single
when I was in Turku. (Any idea when the new album is coming out,
Kimmo, Sami?)

Beats me, but I do know for sure that Turku sucks as far as decent
record shops go... You oughta try Helsinki instead...

Well, it's not easy to know as all I have is a list of the subscribers'
email addresses, but if some of the "real names" used when subscribing
to the list are correct, then there are a couple. Anyway, I don't
feel the gender of the subscribers are as important as the music
we're discussing. :)

Backfisch haven't released anything yet, but they are included on
a West Side promo (I've never seen it myself) and the "the 23enigma"
compilation (also on West Side).

Just curious, why would lying low be sensible..?
Surely you can't be implying that posting to scan-indie is a surefire
way for a girl to get her mailbox flooded by sad characters hungry for
correspondence with *gasp* a Swedish girl!! Methinks there are indie
kids of both/all sexes on most lists, why should ours be any different.
The girls are just busy learning the bass.

Oh yes. I was afraid of such letters from boys.
I said I was sorry if you found that not fitting into scan indie.
But. That's the only place when I can find *normal* girls/boys even
from Sweden. Or do you think the Neural Network or the Virtual

Ok. That is already overtalked.

Hey! She's a girl! She's a girl! :))))
And...
Is there someone who knows something about the lyrics?
(Urge Overkill: Girl you'll be a woman soon)
To Erik:
Anno, I have read in the subscribing info that there is a
digest way to get the stuff. And you can get it when the post
comes to 30k or something, if I can remember well.
Would it be possible to make it daily digest? I mean 30k or not
you get the post every day. I don't know what the digest
subscribers are thing about it, but for me it would be better
than getting sometime 10-12 letters a day, and I could read them
the next day in one.
Thanx.
And at last... I'd also like to be in the tape chain. Please put
me onto the list! :))
That's all for today.
