I did. Love them, as always. I can't help it but, i get so happy when i hear them. The melodies, the atmosphere, the way they talk to the audience, makes me lucky, somehow. And then they did one of the best songs this year: "Mellow Doubt", which also has brilliant lyrics that means something to me. That's personal, but anyway... Still, i agree with Langstrom that Bandwagonesque was the best album they've made, compared to the later ones. Yeah! Definitely Radiohead the 1/12 at Gino. Support Drugstore i think. Radiohead are ace, and they slammed Gino the last time they played there! There's also a party for the arty magazine 90-Tal, with lot's of jet set people in downtown Stockholm 28/11. A few live acts will be there, including seminal act Dom Dummaste ("The Most Stupids"). Sarah are (or should I say were?) a seminal UK indiepop label, I mean THE seminal label of the past decade or so! Bands in their roster were Field Mice, Heavenly, Blueboy, Northern Picture Library, The Orchids among many others. Their music could be described as twee, sensitive, emotional, fluffy with exactly the right amount of naivety and honesty... I'm sure somebody else on this list can give a better description than this. If you want to find out more about the lable, get the "Sarah 100: There And Back Again Lane" compilation CD. It sums up the label and its bands quite well. The following message was posted to the indiepop mailing list, I thought I'd pass it on: According to Peter Hahndorf: Just in time for your X-mas shopping are two new CDs by German label Marsh Marigold Records. First the long overdue debut-full length by Swedish popsters RED SLEEPING BEAUTY. Actually it's only 19:45 min long but it has eight songs. It's called 'Bedroom', but has nothing to do with bedroom pop. BTW have you ever encountered a Swedish band making bedroom pop? Personally I think the songs here are the best they released since their 'Pop Sounds' 3" CD back in 1992. I'm looking forward to their appearance at the annual Marsh Marigold X-mas festival in two weeks. Contact: Marsh Marigold Record c/o Oliver Goetzl Simrockstr. 111 22589 Hamburg Germany or me via e-mail Pete -------- In case somebody is interested, the other new Marsh Marigold release is a CD by the French band Caramel. Funny, I'm listening to it right now. It's pretty ok. Much more mellow than the previous ones, though. Some really good songs, some not so good. The first song sounds almost exactly like the first song on Boo Radley's first full length, Spaniard. While I'm at it, I might as well add some scan-indie content... Two of the records I listen to the most right now are Honey Is Cool's "Focky Focky No Pay" and Yvonne's eponymously titled debut. Really good, both of them, even though I like the songs on HIC's demo much more than the new songs. /Ludde ---------------------- Date: Tue, 5 Dec 1995 16:40:28 +0100 From: d-sunjan@jmk.su.se (Jan Sundstrom) Subject: Re: Swervedriver, Popsicle >yes, why not? i haven't heard their latest album though so, what's it like? The question is a bit quirky, but i'd say yes, maybe. The first time i read about them was in Nojesguiden when they became demo of the month (Jan Gradvall?). Later, i also read in Expressens archive, the first time they were mentioned. That was Lars Lindstrom, seing them live in Pitea (or Skelleftea). He wrote something like: "these guys are going to get big, i promise. Remember where you read it first.". Personally, i first heard about them in august -91(?), when they were palying in Pet Sounds basement at Tulegatan, in their old shop. That was just when Template was released. Later that year i saw them in Uppsala on the "Trimotore" tour, with Mindscape and This Perfect Day(?). Hey, i'm a journalist, although not employed at the moment. I used to work at Expressen. Don't throw shit at journos, in fact you should blame the record companies who send this stuff to them. But then, these are private companies, they can do what they want with their promos. And as long as they see that this works and their artists get press, there's no way to stop them. I could argue a lot more on this, but i leave it now... I've been trying to get some news out of their record label for a while about touring outside Sweden, but I haven't received an answer yet. I'll talk to them in person on monday though, so maybe I can get some answers then. //Erik --------------------- Date: Thu, 7 Dec 1995 02:37:07 +0100 From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Re: Journalists On Wed, 6 Dec 1995, Per L}ngstr|m wrote: ...a lot of things about journalists, and I just had to write something myself. I respect journalists, as long as they have their facts right and aren't making things up, or writing stuff about something they don't know anything about. Christian wanted to know what journalists one is talking about, so I'll go ahead and slag one. Anders Nunstedt. He's written so much shit, and I don't mean his own opinions, because of course, he's entitled to have those, like the rest of us, but his facts and his journalism looks like he just made up his journalist degree. Examples? Sure. The parade example is - tadaa: The Charlatans. 1) His review of The Charlatans "The Charlatans". He says that there are no hammond on the album, which he thinks is great. Even the headline for the review stated that fact. * Fact: The hammond is present on ALL tracks on the album. 2) His interview / festival report from the Stockholm Water Festival about The Charlatans stated that they played just when China blew off their fireworks, which made the concert a bit strange. * Fact: Funny that. I was there. I guess he wasn't, because they let The Charlatans gig wait for China's fireworks to end, making it 1/2 an hour late. 3) Note in expressen friday - "Tim Burgess, singer in Charlatans is a man of good taste. Therefor it was a bit chocking to open the latest issue of the trend magazine I-D, which has a big story about the english pop group. The article is namely illustrated with cool pictures of Tim - wearing a Djurgarden sweater." * Fact: Explanation for those outside Sweden: Djurgarden is a hockey/ soccer/etc team from Stockholm. If Anders Nunstedt had been at their gig at the Stockholm Water festival, he would have noted, like I did, that a bunch of guys (standing next to me) in front of the stage threw that Djurgarden sweater to Tim, which he then wore through the rest of the gig. Now THAT would have been something to write about, but to write that he's surprised instead, just shows a lot about his journalistic ability, and even makes the no.2 above even more clear about him not being there at all. I did write to expressen and asked about these things, but, as you well know, no answers and nothing on the "readers" page. WHO DARE TO QUESTION A. NUNSTEDT?! Yeah, he's a god. Right. Thank you for your objectiveness. And I won't even mention his appearence in the, frequent shown on MTV, "Sweden" commercial. //Erik ----------------------- Date: Thu, 7 Dec 1995 02:37:33 +0100 From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Re: Salt + Fireside On Wed, 6 Dec 1995, d-sunjan@jmk.su.se (Jan Sundstrom) wrote: > Hey! got a letter today from Gino. And they play here the day after! 11/12 at Skylten, Linkoping (Salt + Fireside), not for free though, but 50:- is affordable I think. All Scandinavian dates are cancelled. Only Z TV had a scoop, saying that she wasn't ill at all, but making a video with Nick Cave in Germany instead. Who knows. Through the internet and lists like this, surely. Going to see bands play, just to find out how they sound. Talking to your friends. Reading fanzines (written by fans rather than journalists - people who actually have to pay for the music they review). I'd say the Finnish music press has not introduced me to one single interesting band for quite a while... Can't speak for Swedish journos, of course. OK, OK, relax. We all _know_ there are no objective standards, no absolutes and everything is equally good and valuable. There is no intrinsic difference between Sonic Dream Collective and the Bear Quartet and Mahler's Fifth Symphony. Unsurprisingly, people all have different tastes. Some people have similar tastes to other people. Also, some people can _write_ about their tastes better than other people. I happen to like Nordic indie music. I cannot possibly go out and buy all of it, and then decide what I like. I haven't got the time to queue up in Aahlens and listen to it all either. Nor do I have so many friends who like the same stuff as I do. And they don't play a whole lot of it on the radio. So I read what the journalists have to say. I read what the people on this group have to say. Then I have less of an overload problem when I go with my 160kr to the nearest record shop. And I can listen and see whether I do like what I hear. So I can read through POP's Top 100 albums and look for things that might appeal to me. And when I see Sly and the Family Stone at number one I think, well, maybe I can check that one out sometime. The problems arise when somebody writes '[band I like] are crap!'. That's just bad journalism. Much more often, it's '[band I like] are past their best, are uninventive, uninspiring, and are basically just copying [some other band]'. Then, it can be much more difficult to listen to the record and say, well, actually I _do_ still like it. But this is _my_ problem. My taste is still the same, but actually it is influenced quite a bit by what I read. It would be nice to have a taste highly independent of the rest of the world. But then, just think, you might discover you actually liked 2 Unlimited better than Sonic Youth! What a thought... Hope so!) on P3 last night for the first time. It's a nice song, in the Popsicle tradition ('Wake up' rather than 'Hey Princess', of course). So the Popsicle fans (hi Kimmo!) will probably like it. However, Andreas's voice is _really_ weak on it. I don't suppose he'd claim to be the world's greatest singer, but he's quite simply missing a lot of the notes, and it sounds really unprofessional. He didn't seem to have those problems on 'Abstinence' and 'Lacquer'. I dunno, some people who can sing well produce hopeless records (Elton John, say) and the reverse is true of some others (Matti from TBQ, Jukka from Aknestik).
