I'm sure MVG have some sort of deal with Sony/Columbia/whatever, managing their distribution worldwide, as they are available in the UK as well, but I think I've only seen them available on import there. I just happen to know everything about Kolrassa Krokridandi (KK) and can clear up most info about them except the facts if you like their music or not. First I wanna say that Kolrassa Krokridandi is their original Icelandic name, but since they wanted to tour abroad and release a CD for the rest of the world to dribble over they adopted the 2nd name Bellatrix. Bellatrix, according to the drummer, Kalli (the only male in the band) means a good trix or a good blowjob. If that means that he wants a good 'trix' or if the girls can give one I dont know ;-) So some history here, KK was formed in ca. 1990, but the girls had known each other for a while before. Yes, I said the girls because KK started out as a 4 girl band. In 1991 they were in a contest for the best young band in Iceland and they won, not because they were females, but because they were original in theyr songs and style and also because all the other bands were playing some death metal crap. The main story the press wrote about the band was about them being girls, and this was considered a big thing by some pop writers. Winning the competition KK could go to a studio and record their songs. They released a CD called Drapa in late '92 and it was not a hit with the public, fortunately, and it was obviously not intended to. Their musical style was too heavy to be pop and the music was serious rather than catchy. So Drapa was not a hit, but it was good original music based on the English new-wave scene (Stone Roses, Charlatans, Ride) but KK added some traditional Icelandic music influences, a great sounding violin and some raw quality to it, making it what it is, great songs. After this the band went throug some transitions, the drummer dropped out and they got Kalli the drummer boy instead, making them a semi-girly band only. They also added another guitar player, Anna. So now they are five: Eliza (singer/violinist), Bibi (bass), Sigrun (guitar), Anna and Kalli. They wrote alot of new material and did another CD in late 1993 called 'Kynjasogur' (strange tales). This CD is much lighter than the previous one, they have developed their own true style, using some real inventive backing vocals, violin and great song writing. This CD is what convinced me about them being the most original current band in Iceland. Therefore I contacted them and got off their asses to come to Scandinavia and play. So in April last year they played 2 gigs in Copen- hagen and one in Helsinki (where I am based). Kolrassa also toured as Bellatrix in November. They played in Denmark, France, England and if I remember right also in Belgium, Germany and more. Both CD's were released on the Bad Taste label in Iceland. Bad taste has now decided to expand and open an publishing office in the US also so the two first releases on BT USA were Bellatrix's 'Stranger Tales' and Unun's 'Super Shiny Dreams' (I can give you the Unun story also if you want). KK also had many songs on various artists albums, I can think of five of the top of my head. I dont know why people are talking about them not being "trained musicians" what the hell does that mean ? When KK started Eliza had been learning the violin for years, Bibi on bass was very ambitious and became quite good very quickly, the guitar player, Sigrun, sometimes had problems following, but hey that only made them more appealing. This is how any band should start. If everybody just graduates from some music academy and starts playing some educated pop/rock/whatever it is bound to be a little sterile. KK was never sterile. Anyways, Eliza has taken some vocal training, since all that screaming can be hard on the throat. Kalli is an excellent drummer, having played in a speed metal band before. Bellatrix or Kolrassa Krokridandi is IMO the best band in Iceland, but there are two close up to the title, Unun and Texas Jesus. Unun is an expert band including Thor of the Sugarcubes, Gunni of Dr. Gunni fame and Heida the perfect pop vocalist. They play pop and are proud of it. Texas Jesus is more harder to classify, they play rock music, but have some influences from E-European cartoon music, country music, Nick Cave plus alot of original ideas. They also have this Trumpet player that gives them a distinctive sound. Great stuff. Texas Jesus released one tape in 1993 'Nammsla Tjammsla' and have had 3 songs on various albums since then, but no CD yet. They will prolly do an album this year and as I posted before they are going to play in Scandinavia later in spring. If you want them to play in other cities than Olso and Helsinki you can contact me and help me arrange it (somebody on the spot needs to book them and hang up a few posters before they come to play). Anyway, I'll soon find out myself what the CD sounds like, as I happened to find a copy from a local shop here!! As a matter of fact, it would have been available here already last week - you can't imagine how shocked I was to hear that! Naturally it's hard to say by looking at the disc if it's any different from their previous ones, but at any rate this time they have printed the lyrics on the booklet! Isn't this pretty much a common behaviour when a Scandinavian band with a (commercially) hopeless name are aiming at an international market? Off the top of my head I can think of at least two more name changes for that reason... Sielun Veljet became L'Amourder, and Pojken Med Grodan I Pannan became Paid Green Parachute. I'm not sure if it helped their sales though, definitely not for the latter. And sometimes a band that already have an English name change anyway, for something shorter and more catchy... like God Damn Carnival turned into Salt, and TV Pop Crisis became Easy. Finally, thanx to Erik for the tip about Loosegoats and Flakes at Kafe 44, which is only 5 minutes from where I live. Flakes started, but I found their grunge with some equilibristic jazzy breaks pretty boring. It didn't help much that Peter of former hardcore gods Raped Teenagers played drums. Then, when Loosegoats where about to start, Lars Nylin (influential pop journalist) suddenly appeared in the small room where the bands play. Maybe he was scouting for the big time record label where he works nowadays?? Anyway, he, just like the rest of the tiny crowd, seemed to like Loosegoats and they got a good reception. They obviously draw their influences from the US rather than the UK, which is fine with me. Bands like Dinosaur Jr, Posies, and Sonic Youth flashed through my head when hearing the 'Goats, and I'll be darned if they haven't been listening a lot to Bob Hund too. They had some merchandise there. As far as I could see noone picked up Flakes' CD, but pretty many got Loosegoats' six track CD "Small Lesbian Baseball Players". I bought it (so did good old Lars Nylin) and I can heartily recommend it. ------------------------- Date: Tue, 2 Jan 1996 23:55:53 +0100 (MET) From: Petter Tiilikainen Subject: Re: Bellatrix or Kolrassa Krokridandi ... plus more According to Marten Sahlen: > just like the rest of the tiny crowd, seemed to like Loosegoats and they > got a good reception. Not really as I beleive his review was the first one (correct me if I'm wrong), so he merely anicipated the storm of "5 out of 5" review scores to come. He ended the review with the words "so now when you have read the only negative review of this album, go ahead and read the top-scoring rest." And I think he does have a point there. I have to say that I feel that M}ns is the only music journalist working at Expressen that I respect, which may affect my judgement as well. :) //Erik --------------------- Date: Wed, 3 Jan 1996 13:12:36 +0100 From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Motor Tour List [02-Jan-96] Motor tour list January 2, 1996 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is the first tour list for 1996, which will be the only full list to be posted to the Scandinavian Indie mailing list. Yes, definitely. I'm so tired of all these softee bands... Cardigans, Cinnamon, Happy Dead Men, Eggstone... blaargh! More Mouth and Loosegoats to the people! > I haven't heard of this? Has he quit writing? What label? Interesting... He'll probably never quit writing, at least on a free-lance basis. From what I've heard he works at Warner (or is it called WEA now?) but I don't know what his position is. Since I know there are some record label people lurking on this list maybe they could fill in... Speaking of Lars Nylin, the other day I re-read an old issue of Sound Affects from 1990, the one with Sator on the cover. In it, Lars wrote an article about the current state of Swedish pop music. He admitted having heard Wannadies and TV Pop Crisis (who changed name to Easy) but they didn't do much for him. He then predicted that the future for Swedish pop would belong to bands like Thirteen Moons, Perssons Pack, Leather Nun, and a few more. Boy, was he wrong there or what? But of course, how was he supposed to know about the oncoming rumble from the north... the invasion, fronted by Popsicle, of mop-topped bands from Norrland that would follow in Wannadies' path. And not to mention the emergence of Bob Hund. This is proof as good as any that pop'n roll journalism shall be about what's happening here and now; not to predict what may come in the future, nor shall it indulge in sticky nostalgia. > I second that recommendation. It's really worth the money (and it's low price) > and I'll definitely get their full-length when it comes out (preliminary > month - May this year). Did they have those nice "skate-type" t-shirts > for sale as well? No, only CD's. The Loosegoats' EP costs only 40 SEK, so it's a good investment. ------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Jan 1996 02:14:05 +0100 From: pong@algonet.se (Magnus Astrom) Subject: Re: Lars Nylin [Marten Sahlen about Lars Nylin] >He'll probably never quit writing, at least on a free-lance basis. I guess he changed his mind, since he's working with, among others, Popsicle these days ... ;-) Best regards, Magnus Astrom, pong@algonet.se --------------------- Date: Fri, 5 Jan 1996 04:11:58 +0100 From: Erik S|derstr|m Subject: Selected News [05-Jan-96] Scandinavian Indie's Selected News 05-Jan-96 Blithe - MNW are working on a Blithe (A West Side Fabrication) WWW page at the moment, which will include pictures, sound samples, links to other Blithe pages on the net and a history of the band. No final date when the page is ready though. Ceilidh - the label based in Link|ping, owned by Ola Hermansson (also in the band Sonic Surf City), released records with, for example, Brainpool and Suredo, have put the label on ice after accepting a job at the Trampolene label (Stockholm Records), which have, for example, current world wide famed The Cardigans in their stable. What will happen with Ceilidh? Pizzicato Five - (only mentioned here because of the following Popsicle news below), the pop duo from Japan received a good review in the morning paper Dagens Nyheter on December 27th by reviewer Nils Hansson, who asks where the innocent, bubbling joy he finds in Pizzicato Five have gone. I have questions for Nils Hansson: what about The Cardigans? What about Cloudberry Jam? What about the unbeleivable similarities between the voice of Cloudberry Jam, Jennie Medin and the girl singing in Pizzicato Five? Help! Popsicle - received a good review in the morning paper Dagens Nyheter on wednesday December 27th by reviewer Nils Hansson. He says that "...they have let classic american rock music influence their songs in a way that would have been unthinkable a few years ago..." and "...is a logical step forward". The headline says "Popsicle walk their own way". Stevepops - who recorded three songs at Toodle Recordings (J|rgen W{rnstr|m's (Cloudberry Jam) Studio) a while ago in Link|ping, planned to be released on a 7" single at the end of 1995, are on the move. The original plan has changed because of several facts. First, their drummer is about to quit the band (which was the reason for them only playing live three times this autumn). Second, the Ola Hermansson story (see Ceilidh news above). And third, Torbj|rn (now living in Kalmar) and the bassist (now living in G{vle) are on their way to move to Stockholm. Currently they are not sure when the new songs will be out and on what label, though Ola Hermansson suggested they'd release the songs themselves and call their label "Celdih", but then they'd rather start their label under a name they select themselves, and release them on that. They're also currently looking for a new drummer in the Stockholm area. Whale - will be one of the many attractions when MTV Europe arranges a grand gala in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy on February 10th, 1996. The gala is held at the end of the european snowboard championships. MTV Europe will broadcast the gala during one week, starting February 18th, 1996. //Erik --------------------- Date: Fri, 5 Jan 1996 08:36:11 -0800 (PST) From: einexile the meek Subject: Blue for 2 / Stina Nordenstam Anyone here know anything about this? And the answer is: "All of it. We'll let you know when we know details and dates." Which, though a bit short, is an uplifting answer. //Erik ------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Jan 1996 05:41:23 +0100 From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Re: Lars Nylin On Thu, 4 Jan 1996, pong@algonet.se (Magnus Astrom) wrote: > As I design record covers for Warner (among others), I have some inside > information on Lars Nylin's wherabouts. Interesting.. is it then possible that he is scouting for Telegram as well? I'm not sure how to translate "general resource of music knlowledge" really :). //Erik -------------------- Date: Sat, 6 Jan 1996 05:41:43 +0100 From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Re: Loosegoats / Lars Nylin On Wed, 3 Jan 1996, Marten.Sahlen@eua.ericsson.se (Marten Sahlen) wrote: > He'll probably never quit writing, at least on a free-lance basis. Sort of a big label then. :) I hope he's scouting for them for Loosegoats sake, even though they seem to do very well on Bad Taste. > No, only CD's. Honey Is Cool are: Karin Dreijer (vocals & guitar) John Jern (guitar) H}kan Hellstr|m (drums) Paul K{llman (synthesizer) Staffan Larsson (bass) (c) 1995, 1996 Scandinavian Indie If the answer is "A." it was answered by the group as a whole. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This interview was done a couple of weeks after their gig, due to the fact that the original interview was thrown away with the trash by mistake. My mistake. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT THE GIG IN LINK PING? SL. A nice event. Q. WHAT SONGS DID YOU PLAY? SL. Wow, I can't remember... most of them were from the CD, and we played two completely new songs. Q. WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU'RE NOT PLAYING IN A BAND? SL. Karin works a bit with photography and painting, among other things. John studies ethnology (sometimes). H}kan is a drama student. Paul mingles with his friends and I'm studying linguistics and philosohpy. Q. HOW DID HONEY IS COOL START? SL. Karin had some discussions with some people about recording a demo with her songs. One beautiful day (or night?) she, John and I finally decided to go ahead and do it. The result was better than we expected, so we decided to continue. Members were added and dropped, and in the winder of 1994, we finally ended up the way we are today. Q. HOW ABOUT RELEASES? SL. One six-track demo called "Honey Is Cool" and one Mini-CD with six songs called "Focky Focky No Pay". And we have two songs on the compilation CD "Kittenish 2". Q. DO ANY OF YOU PLAY IN OTHER BANDS AS WELL? SL. Yes, Paul plays with Sludge Nation, and H}kan sings in P}vels. Q. WHO WRITES THE LYRICS? SL. Karin does. Q. DO THEY REFLECT HER OWN EXPERIENCES? SL. Yes. Q. ARE YOU LOOKING FOR OTHER COUNTRIES TO CONQUER? SL. Yes, all but Japan. Q. DO YOU HAVE ANY INFLUENCES YOU'D LIKE TO MENTION? SL. Flaming Lips, Rod Stewart, Bonnie Tyler, Sonic Youth and Sebadoh. Q. ARE YOUR INFLUENCES THE SAME AS YOUR FAVOURITES? SL. In some cases yes, and in other, no, but still? I doubt it. Q. DO YOU LISTEN TO ANY SWEDISH MUSIC? SL. Some of us like the Bear Quartet, but we all like Soundtrack Of Our Lives and Mazarine Street. Q. WILL YOU TOUR OTHER SCANDINAVIAN COUNTRIES? SL. Yessir! Denmark for example (soon, maybe). Q. WHAT DID IT FEEL LIKE TO PLAY FOR A PACKED HULTSFRED 95? SL. WIIIIIIIII! Q. WHO ARRANGED THE MINI-FESTIVAL IN KALMAR (25/12 1995)? WHAT HAPPENED? SL. It was planned by two mad "vinterbadare" who visited us after a gig we had in V{xj|. Unfortunately, Karin and John got the flu, so we had to cancel. Q. WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR HONEY IS COOL? ANY PLANS? SL. We'll sell-out and grab the political power in the USA. Or quit.
