Subject: Selected News [06-Jan-96]
HappyDeadMen - 's latest release consists of track(s) on a Japan-only
compilation under the name "Winter Gift". Other bands on
the compilation includes Confusions and Leslies.
Hultsfred 96 - is on the planning stage. The date is June 13th - 15th,
and that's the only thing that is sure right now, says
Patrik Axelsson, one of the arrangers. Then he continues
to say that "we have never had so many headliners, big
artists, that we're talking to, this early." which isn't
very strange, as the festival is two months earlier than
all 10 previous years.
Lollipop 96 - is also on the planning stage. The Stockholm date is July
26th - 27th. Håkan Waxegård, the man behind the event, doesn't
know if the festival will tour this year. Maybe. His dream-team
for this year could be "Stakka Bo, Olle Ljungström and
The Cardigans" or "Yvonne, Eggstone and The Wannadies". He's
not afraid of getting Robyn either. "Popsicle are too obvious
to get", he says.
Sonic Surf City - fronted by Ola Hermansson, who recently appeared in this
column (?) (:-)), are planning to release a new album on
the Trampolene label later this spring.

Corrections/Updates
1) I made a mistake writing the Selected News yesterday. I accidentally wrote
that Ola Hermansson is a member of Happy Dead Men, but the band should be
_Sonic Surf City_ instead. (I always seem to mix those two somehow).
Sorry for any trouble this might have caused, and thanks to John for
spotting the error.
2. Added Popsicle live appearence on TV (today!) and Leslies & Riff Raff
live on the Radio (tonight!) to the Radio & TV list.

Talking about the tape chains, I have *almost* finished the Finnish
Pop Tape! You never believed you'd live long enough to see this,

Yeah, I've got a couple of additions/suggestions. Anyone who thinks
Cardigans or Cloudberry Jam are cool should really hear Blissful!! I
am listening to their album "Blissful Orchestra" and it's incredible!
Also I think you shouldn't leave out Red Sleeping Beauty, as they are
one of the better known Swedish indie bands worldwide!
Finally, Popundret were simply stunning on last year's
Trastockfestivalen. I think they (or is it just he? :) released
something new at the end of last year?
Well..that's my 0.02 markka worth.

Subject: Tambourine Studios Review
Hi all.
This is my first post to the list and I hope it will prompt at least a few
comments from everybody else. I'd especially love feedback about Trio
Lligo (releases, recommendations?) and Cloudberry Jam.
As a little how-do and all that sort of rot, I'm Alexander, I live on the
border zone of the People's Republic of Berkeley (Kalifornia) and my
scandinavian connection has been formed mostly on the basis of the Grimsey
Fishmarket fanzine and the "2nd Half" tape. (Chocolate Barry, where art
thou?). My meager collection includes a good deal of Eggstone, an ep by
Seashells (anxiously awaiting receipt of some new goodies by them) and
quite a few ep's by Red Sleeping Beauty, who I think have been getting
quite good recently.
I got the Tambourine Studios compilation in a package from a friend in the
South of Sweden. The sleeve is a pretty nice gatefold all paper package
with a booklet thrown in. Each band submitted their own artwork for one
page each in the booklet. Styling varies quite a bit from page to page,
from somebody's truly frightful looking mug from Bob Hund, to the slick
studio concept photo from Cardigans. It's on "Vibraphone" and has the
catalogue number 5, so I' also really curious as to what else this label
might have released. Also in my package I got Cloudberry Jam's "Blank
Paycheck" which is also pretty tip-top, but I shan't review it today, and
Divine Dennis' "Six Songs of the Summer," which while it starts off
strong isn't nearly up to the standard set by the track on the Tambourine
comp.
And now to the blow by blow track commentary:
*Bob Hund "Du daer! Kom hit!
Sounds pretty rockin (punkish) but when the keyboards kick in I
can't help but think of Eggstone. Something triumphant/joyful there.
Lots of changes in a scant1:57.
*Lady Lynette & the Spokesmen "Firefly
Very acid soul-ly. Sounds pretty straight in a jazz disco way. I
like it but it was too straight for Rebecca. When I listened to it on
headphones for the first time I got pretty into the extra beats the
drummer tosses in here and there.
*Get Happy "Everything is Alright Sometimes"
So this is the closest thing to grunge on this cd. But it's
pretty damn poppy. Or maybe so was grunge? I can take this much.
*The Cardigans "Happy Meal"
Catchy as all get out. When she sings "No one can be as HAPPY as
me," I can't help but think of Altered Images. The mix of instruments and
arrangements are pretty heterogenous. This tune sent me out looking for
their records (Life is pretty easy to find but only at a price well above
the local average for imports, and besides, Henrik tells me their first
album was much better).
*Trio Lligo. "Flykten Fran Elfenbenstornet"
My favorite track (at the moment). It's the only track in Swedish
and it sounds excellent. Of course I can only make out about every
fifteenth word, but it sounds delightfully twisted and I love to sing
along. It's based on a punchy accoustic guitar banging along accompanied
by a lot of snare drum and, wait, is it a stand up bass or is it a cello.
Bowed strings really puts this hybrid of pop in it's own category. OK,
it's vaguely reminiscent in of early Violent Femmes in it's aggressive use
of accoustic instruments, but the mood is pure joy.
*Cloudberry Jam "Waiting For Another Day"
Cloudberry Jam are a different breed of cat. They've got some
roughness and "alternative" edges to their sound, but they've managed to
incorpoate jazz in a way that no one else has. The overall sound is rough
pop, but plickety-plink guitars and little jazzy drum bits come in at the
ends of the lines. There's lots of scat singing in the backing vocals but
they come out like rhythm guitars in the general musical assault. Another
winner. My package also included a copy of their album "Blank Paycheck"
which I'm enjoying, but it hasn't gotten nearly as much play as this
compilation so far. This version is different from the one on the album.
*Three Blind Mice "That's What She Said"
This could be Eggstone from "Somersault" with a different singer.
I like that Eggstone too, but not as much as the older, more exotic, less
rock (or stone) Eggstone of "Shooting Time" and the subburbs of San Diego.
*Agurk Brothers "Fool"
OK, it couldn't all be good. This track sounded interesting for the first
few seconds with some funk sax panned all the way over to one side in the
background, but quickly enough it got on my nerves, reminding me too much
of a certain Red Hot Chili Peppers Song.
*Eggstone "Still All Stands Still"
What to say. I love Eggstone, even when they aren't nearly as kinky jazzy
as they used to be. Sounding more like a rock and roll band, although, I
must admit, their lyrics have improved a bit.
*The Excuse "Long Gone"
Another band that sounds a lot like they've been growing in Eggstone's
shadow. Nice, not very interesting, and not so loaded with hooks as
Eggstone's material, but the very A&M sounding horn section towards the
end is very infectious.
*Devine Dennis "Killing Kind"
Divine Dennis does full-on disco. And yet it starts of with
almost jangly guitar which is a bit weird for the genre. Dennis really
carries the tune with his diva antics, pacing in the vocals that seems to
shape the song, stepping in and out of the rhythm. Plus there's this
wonderful buzzing noise (almost sounds like a guitar, could it be a
keyboard going through some distortion and a wah wah pedal?) and "star
trek" style vocals in the background. A great mix that plays 70's disco
against other genres and periods. This one scored points from my pal
Rebecca for camp presentation that the Lady Lynette track missed. A great
finish to a very nice disc.

Cue Club - the club in Gothenburg burned down to the ground during the night
between saturday and sunday. A lot of bands have played at the
club, and a lot of bands are booked to play there. What will
happen with the bands booked and will the club be re-built again?

I can recommend them to anyone who like the 'easy listening pop'
thingy (which seems to be catching on even here in Tampere). Try the
"Made in USA" compilation, for example. Good fun!
* Popsicle - received a good review in the morning paper Dagens Nyheter on
* wednesday December 27th by reviewer Nils Hansson. He says that
* "...they have let classic american rock music influence their
* songs in a way that would have been unthinkable a few years ago..."
* and "...is a logical step forward". The headline says "Popsicle

I listened to the album one more time trying to spot the "classic
American rock" influence, but I don't really know... maybe he's
referring to the slower songs on the album? Surely, the piano ballad "A
Song Ago" could be Neil Young '73-ish (you'll have to trust me on this
one :). But otherwise I wouldn't really say that the album is more or
less 'American' than their previous ones.
What sounds like a new approach (to my ears anyway) are the two really
long tracks - maybe they have spent some time listening to Stereolab
lately? Although, somehow they sound a bit like The Wedding Present
too...except for the vocals of course.
Also I was quite amazed by the completely different kind of CD booklet
with all the lyrics, photos of the band, even musicians' names and
'regular' stuff like that. Are they trying to be more commercial or
what?
Finally, I think the album is very good, it's even better than I dared
to expect. I was afraid that they wouldn't be able to produce a third
pop masterpiece, but they have! Especially the two opening tracks
"When It Was Good With Us" and "Not Forever" are instant classics, and
there are others too. Overall, it's more varied than before, which
adds to the listening pleasure. I also think that the band sounds
better on this album than ever before.
Well, I'd like to hear other listmembers give their opinion - I can't
surely be the only one who has heard the album so far?! :)

If you have access to the WWW, check out Cloudberry Jam's own homepage

If not, there are three (or four?) demo tapes, one CD EP called "La La La",
(1992) one Mini-CD called "The Art of Being Cool" (1994) and one full-
length CD called "Blank Paycheck" (1995), all on North Of No South.
They have released a Japan-only CD as well called "Cloudberry Jam", which
is the Blank Paycheck CD plus four (or five) extra tracks on it, from
The Art of Being Cool. And then they appear on this compilation CD from
Tambourine Studios that you mentioned. They're in the studio right now
recording their new album which will be out in February. You can email

You mean it's an import, right? I just wonder when their albums and
singles will be domestically released over there. It shouldn't be too
long now really.

That I agree with, somewhat. The "Emmerdale" album had a lot more "hits"
on it than "Life", which probably has something to do with the whole
"I like their first one better" movement. :)

A few years ago, when they had an additional member, their live
performance was full of guitar-walls and "alternative" edges as you
call it, as well as a huge bit of humour. Once at a place called
Platens here in Linköping, the guy (who played guitar) jumped around
on the stage, and finally went into the bathroom next to the stage,
still playing, and finished the song from in there. :) When he was
kicked from the band, they sort of reformed into this softer/jazzy
thing, losing the humour completely, which I find a bit sad. They
still kick live musically though.

That sounds indeed pretty amazing :). But are we going to have a cover
that's similar on all the compilation tapes, like a series sort of.
We discussed it before, but I don't think we decided anything?

I don't have anything with RSB unfortunately (yes, I'm ashamed..), but
if we listers go together when making the tape, someone could send me
(or whoever's going to make the Swedish tape) some songs with them, or

have a really really old song with them on a compilation. :-/

Cardigans - who are signed to the Trampolene label (Stockholm Label Group)
was signed to a label in the US in December 1995. Release
dates / etc. will follow soon.
Emmaboda Festival 96 - has taken the old Hultsfred Festival date, which
means that the Emmaboda Festival will take place
between August 9-10, 1996, in Emmaboda. Arranged
as usual by Vinterbadarna.
Loosegoats - will release a CD single in February and their debut album
will be released in March, on the Bad Taste label. Titles
are yet to be announced.
Naked - has been signed to the Trampolene label (Stockholm Label Group),
and will release their debut album sometime this spring.
P3 Live - the best place to hear live concerts on the swedish national
radio have cut down their broadcasting hours from 6 hours to
4,5 hours a week, due to reductions in funds from the owners.
Pineforest Crunch - will release a single called "Cup Noodle Song" on
January 15th 1996, and an album will follow in
February 1996, on the Polar label (Stockholm Label
Group).
Roskilde Festival 96 - over 10.000 tickets to the Roskilde Festival 96 were
sold during the "special release" month of December
1995. And this without mentioning one band that will
play there. The rest of the tickets (about 80.000)
will be released starting April 1st, 1996.
Salt - 's label in the US, Island, planned to release a first single,
"Bluster" in January 1996, but since Bluster made it to one of
LA's most important radio stations', KROQ, play list sooner than
expected, the plan has changed. The story goes somewhat like this:
Jason Bentley at San Fransisco radio station KCRW started to play
Bluster from a Compilation CD, "CMG", released by Island in the
autumn of 1995 and then made a guest appearence on KROQ, where he
played Bluster on the air and for the program manager, who loved
the song. The same week, Bluster made it to KROQ's play list.
MVG's Nina Beckman says that the chance of a compilation CD song
making it to the KROQ play list is almost nil, which makes this
whole story pretty remarkable. The plans changed quickly after
that, and the single "Bluster" was released on December 15th 1995,
and the album "Auscultate" will be released in the beginning of
March 1996. A large-scale tour of Europe and the US will follow
later this spring.
Sophie Zelmani - 's album "Sophie Zelmani" was released in Japan the first
week of December 1995. It will also be released in the
rest of Europe in March/April 1996 and in the US in April/
May 1996.

I've once again changed the graphics on the Scandinavian Indie WWW
pages, hopefully it looks a bit better now. :)
I've also added some new pages. 1) Record Labels, and 2) Upcoming
Record Releases (09-Jan-96).
The Record Labels page contains a list of Swedish Record Labels
(with information) that I've been collecting here and there
at the moment, but I'd like it to contain lists for the other
Scandinavian and Baltic countries as well, so if you'd like to
help me collect such info for those lists, please let me know.
Also if you have corrections/additions to the Swedish list
of course. :)

They have meda four releases since they started in '88: one 7" EP, 2 LP's, and
a CD album (from which "Flykten..." is taken). You should be able to get these
from the record company, North Of No South Records. All info can be found at the
above location.

As to Seashells, they have a new (and good!) album out on North Of No South,
"We Rob Banks". You'll find them too in the Bands section of the above location.

Well, not the best BH track, i must admit. They played it live for two or
three months, but is now forgotten. Anyway, check out their two CDs or see
them live if they ever come to your town. They rock a million times more on
stage!!!

Now I'm curious. I definitely do like this tune (and sorry about my
messed up Germanized spelling - no umlauts make it through my server).
Do Bob Hund just do instrumentals or if they do sing too, what's it
like? By the way, is Bob Hund someone's name or is this a name for a
band? If someone can supply me with the album titles (and recommedations
and catalogue numbers will also help) I could start bugging my friend at
Tower Records to try to get something for me.

Well, they mostly sing, but their concerts are sometimes broken up with
these small intersections, where the singer Thomas Oeberg floats over the
audience or does wild pogo in front of the stage, or stands on a chair
among all the people, or freaks out with a large orange traffic cone!

Just the band. It's the "dog smoking pipe" logo. (dog=hund).

The two albums are both just called "Bob Hund", the first one is a 6-track
mini album, the second a full length. I don't have the numbers, but Robert
C will certainly fill you up on this. He also runs some excellent pages.

It would impress me if you could get any. I've never heard of anyone buying

You bet. :) They're signed to North Of No South, have released a full-
length CD and a CD single (and four demo tapes), they played at Blur's
afterparty in Stockholm (1994?)... There's an interview with them on the
SI WWW pages (and in ASCII format from the FTP site).

They've been called that for ages over here as well. Even when they
were called Beetroots. I have a gig-poster on my wall from when they
played in Linköping the first time saying "Beetroots - Eggstone meets
Blur".

It's a bit of a hassle this way, so I was thinking, maybe we should go about
this in a different way.. I was thinking of a "vote" thing sort of.
Like this:
1) Those interested in the Swedish Indie tape chain could e-mail
me (chief@lysator.liu.se) with a list of bands (say 10 bands
or something like that). Maybe a last date to send lists should
be decided as well?
Suggested last date: __February 1st, 1996__.
2) I'll collect the lists and sort them into a "top" list, which
will be posted to the mailing list. If we haven't decided on
songs, we'll do that then, from the "top" list, in the same
way as with the band lists.
Suggested last date: __February 15th, 1996__.
3) Bands and songs "top" list will be posted to the list, and then
the work with compiling the tape and designing the "cover" will
start. I can do the tape and the "cover" etc if you want me to,
though I wouldn't say no to some help. :)
4) The tape is sent to the first (closest) person on the "interested
in the Swedish Indie tape chain" list with as many "covers" as
interested persons. Each person takes one "cover" and copies the
tape and sends the original tape with the rest of the "covers",
striking out his/her name on the included list, to the next person
on it.
5) The last person on the list sends back the tape to me (or whoever
manages the chain).
How does that sound? Maybe we can make all the tapes this way?

_No_, don't avoid that! Please post _your_ opinion, even if it is
bands you _don't_ want to see on the compilation tape. That's the
whole point! And that way, we'll get a damn good tape too. :)

I was thinking that maybe it's time to post the whole idea again anyway
:), but the sheer size (23k) of the collected messages about the tape chain
during 1995 (even edited) makes me not want to post it to the entire
list, so if anyone's interested in reading the whole thing from the start,
let me know and I'll email you the file.
In short though, these people have taken it upon themselves to compile
tapes:

Finnish Indie - Kimmo (trkisa@uta.fi)

which means that we have no-one compiling Norwegian or Danish Indie

Subject: WWW pages, a final time
I won't post (unless you want me to that is) news about what's happened
on the Scandinavian Indie WWW pages to the list from now on, as I'm
not sure anyone's interested. I mean, if you check the pages, you check
the pages and will see what's new/added etc.
Anyway, I've added a small Swedish Festivals 1996 page, with the info
I've managed to find so far (ie. not much). The Swedish Record Labels
page has now got an index, which is clickable, and the Helikopter
label has been added to it. Some Selected News were added as well
as the latest couple of digests (with a layout change of the SID page),
and a new "Quick Bar" has been added for those who want to zoom through
the pages at light speed :).
I think that's about it.
Oh and remember, the Selected News bits and pieces posted to the list
does not include (most of the time) the Source (which is required when
publishing it, though not through a "private" mailing list like this
one), but _is_ listed on the Selected News WWW pages, in case someone
thought of distributing them somehow.
Just trying to please those who started the alarm. Sort of.

About Salt's success on US radio,
KROQ is indeed a very important radio station. In their regular music
schedule they play a handful of bands over and over again all the time.
So if you tune in to the station for about 15 minutes you go "wow"
and you get the impression that they are this very daring alternative
radio station. The thing is, after listening to the station for an hour
you will have heard Nirvana four times, Bush (yuch!) four times,
Red Hot Chili Peppers four times and so on. Since early December
Salt is one of those bands that has been played all the time.
For the average Californian this is great since they never listen
to a single radio station for more than 15 minutes in a row (while
siting in their cars on the way to Taco Bell). The KROQ playlists
are very much controlled and calculated by their producers and the
individual dj's have almost no influence at all on their own shows.
But, KROQ is very successful and has a huge impact on record sales.
The most important thing is though the way that MTV producers look
at KROQ`s playlists when they add songs to their Buzz-clips.
So Salt could't be in a better position right now. If Island
really promote the album a lot and if the band get over here to tour
I bet that they will be big.

Their singer/guitarist Peter Kvint used to be the frontman in radio darlings
Farbror Blå some years back. He and I were classmates back in the gymnasium
(booohh, namedropping!! :) so I know him very well. Last time I met him he
told me his new "indie pop" band was called Honey, but I guess they changed
the name to avoid confusion with all the other honey bands: Honey Is Cool,
Honeypie, Honeycave.
More useless trivia (from an interview in Noejesguiden): The title "Skycracker"
was inspired by H&M's advertising campaign featuring a very young angel-like
girl in underwear... ett himmels-kex = a skycracker. He he.

um, you should be able to get hold of their 7-inchers through freak
scene records in stockholm, i believe. the last time a was there (which
is a few weeks back), they had like three or four different ones. most
of them were released on some spanish label. weird.
