Subject: Slask Records / Sara Hedin
Just read that Slask Records will release a CD with Sara Hedin called "Pray"
on their sub-label "Some Pearls", in April, and that caught my attention, as
from what I understand, that label was made for swedish Pop pearls.
And when we have Slask Records on this list, I thought it was a good idea
to ask directly about Sara Hedin? What does she / her music sound like?
Any information you can supply the list with?

Frank Black - that promotion stunt we've all heard about, which made Expressen
Fredag cancel their interview with Mr. Black, was once again
a topic in the magazine Topp40. With a picture of Carina
Svenberg (editor-in-chief of Expressen Fredag) at the event,
smiling wide to the "black-dressed guys", it is somewhat
surprising that the hip crowd at Expressen then later cancelled
the interview, one might think. Here's a quote: "The hippest
publication of them all - Expressen Fredag - thought the
whole thing was so boring that reporter Anders Nunstedt, 17
years old, decided to cancel the interview he had booked with
Mr. Black. A mystery concerning the whole thing is that the
Editor-in-chief, Carina Svenberg, 16 years old, actually looks
pretty amused in the picture above..."
Cardigans - celebrated their million copies selling album "Life" with a
party in London last week.
Hultsfred Festival 96 - presented a couple of names for the festival in
June - Pulp, Blur and Iggy Pop. They also announced
that more information will be released on February
13th, so we'll have to wait some more it seems.
Record Releases - a lot of them have been announced, the coming week includes
Popundret "Montmartre 15 40", Ludo X "Audience" and Fireside
"Left Rustle". Upcoming releases includes Kent (Week 11),
a bunch of West Side bands like, Puffin "In Red And Yellow"
(Week 9), Peniless People of Bulgaria "Velocity" (Week 8)
on Music For Nations (?), A Shrine "Unisex" (Week 12),
Waterbug "Monday Morning Quarterback" (Week 15) and Stardog
in April.
Westgotha Festival - will be held in Trollhattan (Sweden) on August 2nd - 3rd

Yeah, I was really disappointed!!! I wanted a refund but didn't get one.
I mean, why go see a band if they're not girls!?
However, it was better than I had expected. Since I don't have any of their
records I'm not able to make an attempt at a set list. Karen was full of
people, and it was real hot inside. Some of the Bear Quartet guys were there,
I was informed that they have a picture disc coming out soon. Anyway,
Popsicle started with "hey princess" and most of the other hits (= the songs
i had heard before) including "lacquer" and "not forever". Those guys sure
know how to bust a move on stage, I think they need to rehearse some funky
fresh hip moves and dance steps. ;-) I had a pretty good time, considering
I'm not even a fan of the band.

A list of record companies in Finland is in the making (by Kimmo), and I'm
working on a clubs / record companies list for Latvia, which I hope will
be ready pretty soon (I'm waiting for more information at the moment), but
I would also like to see such lists for Denmark and Norway - anyone up for
the job?

Uh-oh, so you're _that_ Kristofer. :-) I've heard a lot about you
actually. :-) Anyway, I just wanted to say that it's pretty sad that
Rabarbeer (where the pump club was held) is no more - it was a great
place, one could never complain on the music, which I think is a "first"
for me at least.

Time to speak up. My name in David M|llerstedt, I live in Gothenburg. I
haven't seen much info from Gothenburg on this list so I guess I have to
contribute on that. What I do: I study 'Computer Science and Engineering'
at Chalmers and I also work as a sound engineer.
About 'Sex Dwarfs', I mixed them once at Magasinet, they are if I
remember right Jan Holm, Henrik Rylander and Vladi something from
Carbide, the singers name I don't remember.
Well I can add that Swervedriver only was 40 kronor at Kompaniet, and
quite good old time indie rock. Local heroes Honey Is Cool & Sludge
Nation have both been very good when playing, last week and the week
before, don't miss them!
Coming up this week in Gothenburg is Chester Copperpot and Mazerine
Street at Magasinet and Kompaniet.

According to Akasha magazine, the single will be called "Scratch The
Surface" (somewhat strange, since the latest Sick Of It All album is
also called that). I have no idea of what the fullenght will be called.
They are no longer on Birdnest though, instead they've signed a
5-record delal with Soundfront.

There might have been a mix-up of some sort in the magazine? The title
for the full-length was called "y Soul" in the Topp40 magazine (sort of
like it was written right after "Candysuck"), but it didn't list their
single (or any single I beleive), but "allfn", on this list, said that they
(the band) were thinking of calling it (the album) "Score"?

That's what "allfn" said as well, but the Topp40 Magazine says it's going
to be released on Mammoth!

like so many other bands before them, union carbide simply broke up. duh.
and they won't be missed by me. their last album did nothing but suck.
which was pretty sad as it was the first swedish band mr.albini produced.
but then again, the second one (souls debut) was much better..

Yes I agree. It was a nice bar with a loud music and a good scene for live
music. Even if me myself was rather tired at pump club (after one and a half
year and almost no money for the work, your inspiration kind of comes to an
end). Now they rebuilt the place to a, guess what... an irish pub. Very
alternative (the third in Kalmar) with bicycles hanging from the ceiling. Do
I need to say that boots and leather vests are the latest fashion there.

Listening to Chester Copperpot, Breach, Komeda and Descendents. Quite a mix
but everything is really nice (perhaps nice is not the word for Breach).

A West Side Fabrication - news: Jocke (the label owner) revealed a whole
bunch of upcoming record releases:

He also said that if you think that A Shrine will
sound the same when playing live as on their new
CD, you're in for a surprise. The CD is _really_
mixed and trixed with. Dance-type apparently.
Aftonbladet - one of the evening papers in Sweden listed "the fresh pop-
voices of -96" in their Friday edition last friday, with
some strange facts. For example, they say that Asa Eklund,
from Pineforest Crunch, said that when they toured the UK,
they went by train (and not in the troublesome "Stars On
Mars" bus as they have stated earlier). What's true?
Brainpool - 's Janne Kask and David Birde are in Spain (Marbella) writing
songs for their new album while drummer Jens Jansson is in
Cuba (on crocodile safari?).
Cardigans - are going back to Japan in April, playing a couple of gigs on
their own and two together with Stakka Bo (!).
Dipper - from Malmo, Hansi Friberg, their bookie (from this very day even!)
says, sound a lot like Bob Hund. Not as original, and not with
swedish lyrics, but still _a lot_ like Bob Hund. Are we going to
take his word for it? No, we're getting a demo tape from them
as soon as possible, and find out for ourselves! :-)
Drain - got four (out of five) "plus" in Aftonbladet for their debut album
"Horror Wrestling". Members of the band are (age): Flavia Canel (32)
guitar, Anna Kjellberg (26) bass, Maria Sjoholm (30) vocals and
Martina Axen (29) drums. Their WWW pages can be found at:

Drowners (The) - from the swedish pop-metropol Skelleftea, released their
debut album "Destroyer" (29/1) on the Speech / A West Side
Fabrication label. Their sound can best be described as
brititsh-Teenage-Fanclub-pop-ish, like a lot of other bands,
though they managed to score 4 out of 5 "plus" in
Aftonbladet for their album. Members of the band are:
Magnus Wikstrom (vocals), Mikael Sundqvist (guitar),
Leif Rehnstrom (guitar), Jonas Bergqvist (bass) and
Andreas Persson (drums).
Fidget - from Gothenburg, is a "new" band to look out for, according to
their bookie, Hansi Friberg. Their first demo became "Demo Of The
Week" in british Melody Maker. Their sound? According to Expressen's
Linda Norrman: "popsynthpop with a lot of british girlie vocals".
Six people are members of the band; Nina Natri (24) vocals,
Louise Weibull (21) guitar, Daniel Claesson (21) guitar, Fredrik
Andersson (24) synthesizer, Pontus Willquist (23) bass and Johan
Forsman (23) drums. Right now, they are all in the UK, talking to
a whole bunch of interested record labels like MCA, Go! Discs
(Polygram) and so on.
Green - will spend the whole month of March in the studio recording their
forthcoming full-length, to be released this autumn. Before that,
they will release a single around April. The band recently left the
Rainbow Music label and are now talking to a major swedish label
(I guess not to be revealed before the contract is signed). The
band has also changed - Magnus, Helene and Bjorn are still there,
but they have new members on drums and bass. The reason behind the
change was mostly because the now-gone-members got time consuming
jobs when they were ready with their university education. Another
reason might be because Magnus, Helene and Bjorn live in Stockholm
and the rest in Gothenburg. Their latest recording sounds really
promising though - even better than the "old" Green!
Hultsfred Festival 96 - are thinking of getting Bjork (cost: 1 million)
and Red Hot Chili Peppers (cost: 1.7 million),
(in SEK) - we'll know for sure on February 13th.
Tickets are released on February 14th. Price:
650 SEK (plus advance-fee).
Mouth - are planning a release party in New York the first or second week
of March, for their album "Hole of Your Head", to be released in
the US in March. A US tour is also planned for May - June. Last time
they played in New York, they played together with Latin Kings at
a Latino club, which maybe sounds awkward, but it was a success,
partly due to Fredrik Joelson's excellent spanish that he learned
while living in Spain for a couple of years. Right now, they are
in the studio recording new material, which they will bring with
them when they are going to the US in the middle of February to
record a new video. Fredrik Joelson (vocals, guitar) has also made
a couple of interviews for forthcoming issues of, for example,
Ray Gun.
Penniless People of Bulgaria - released a CD single called "Motorhead"
on 22/1 on the A West Side Fabrication label.
The band also has a European contract, which
means that those of you outside Scandinavia
(in Europe) can find their releases on the
Music For Nations label.
Pinko Pinko - heads for the studio in the near future. They will record
a couple of new songs for an EP which will be released in
April (preliminary).
Popsicle - are joined by Pineforest Crunch on their remaining tour of
Sweden, and the one date in Denmark (22/2) and Norway (31/3).

Popundret - got 2 out of 5 "plus" in Aftonbladet for their new album
"Montmartre 15 40", released 19/1 on A West Side Fabrication.
The reviewer, Per Bjurman thought they were too unstable to
manage the Morrissey sound they're supposed to deliver.
Salt - The Internet Broadcast from Seattle is audio only. It is live from
Seattle which is 12 Midnight February 10th - in Sweden that will
be 9:00 am February 11. URL will be posted here before the gig!
Some tour dates for Salt have been added, and one, at Brownie's in
NYC has been moved. For that information check out the Scandinavian

Trastocksfestivalen 96 - the Swedish Woodstock, will be held July 19 - 20
this year. And as usual it is for free. Jocke said
they were thinking of stepping down a bit this year,
as it was almost too much people there last year,
but he had no plans on how. All the West Side bands
will be there, and Jocke hoped that Salt would come
back and play this year again.
Velvet Belly - from Norway, will play in Stockholm at Studion on March
27th together with The Bluetones. At last, this norwegian
wonder is back in Sweden!

Subject: Super & Cessna reviews
A couple of days ago (actually this monday), I received the Super CD single
"Spark" released on Tangerine Records and the Cessna demo tape "Hobby-like"
from Kimmo (on the list). Here are my personal and honest reviews:

Super - "Spark" CD5 - Tangerine Records 1995 (Tang-007)

After reading a lot of great things about this band on this list, and have
gone through some personal e-mail exchanging with Minna in the band, I'm
pretty sad about what I am about to write.
1. "did you notice the SPARK?"
Easy-listening pop reach my ears when this song starts. Not far from
Cardigans now and then. But then it starts. The vocals. Minna's voice.
A nervous one. Breaking a couple of times throughout the song even,
and what's worse, it's out of tune most of the time! It makes me remember
a band a friend of mine played in five or six years ago. The girl singing
wasn't nervous, but she had somehow figured, on her own, that she couldn't
sing in her normal tone of voice, so she raised her voice, high on the
scales, all the time. She sounded like an opera singer. The problem was,
this girl had been through a lot of schools training her voice. She was
"full taught", and no one dared to say anything to her about her voice.
But, of course, one day, they did talk to her, and she, resisting at first,
did try to sing in her natural tone of voice, and everything sounded a
thousand percent better.
2. "tune into PEOPLE'S DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT"
Beautiful, classy, easy-listening pop is found in this song. And the
lyrics are actually great, even though it's only "pa paradada..." throughout
the whole song. I think it was a smart move, because it makes you think
about the music, and not the vocals. And the music is great. Well-smitten,
swinging pop in the Cardigans aura. The best one on this single.
3. "children sing of TROUBLE WITH SEX"
Acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass and duet vocals. A short slow
song, and even though Minna's voice isn't my cup of tea, she sings in
this one, like the first one, but without breaking, and it isn't out
of tune. I don't know really. I feel that if they wanted a song to end
the single with, this is really a good selection.

Cessna - "Hobby-like" demo tape - September 1995

I didn't read the review on the list about this one, so I'm sure nothing
that it said have affected me. :-) And it is an _honest_ review.
1. utterly alone
Nice swirly guitars, and the Shoegazer vocals starts almost immediately.
Floating, dreamy male vocals. The chorus is a wall of noise matching the
dreamy vocals, ending with smattering professional-sounding drums.
A "Plopping" Hammond (?) throughout the song gives it somewhat of a
synth feeling, but it's not a disturbing one.
2. cardamom kiss
A picking Bear Quartet guitar starts the song. Great similarity to the
soft BQ vocals we've heard from Matti lately as well, but not at all
times. During the chorus, a Cardiganesque bass leads the way.
3. reconcile
This track has a _really strong_ Bear Quartet feeling (musically) with a
swirly, hitting chorus, impossible _not_ to tap your foot to. Soft and
whispering vocals, that one's gotten used to, from the band, this far.
4. my blue anglia
There's only one word for this song: Cardigans. But with whispering,
dreamy, soft, fluffy vocals. You can wave your arm like Nina to it,
especially the chorus. :-) I even tried a line from Rise & Shine during
the chorus, and it worked.
5. oh grey
Easy swirly guitar song with great breaks between sections, and I love
the chorus. The vocals are in perfection. The Choir "papapapaaaa"'s and
"aaaahhhhhaaaa"'s really fills the song with professionalism of sorts.
6. this will end in tears
Fantastic! Favourite! The chorus is brilliant! I don't like the break
between chorus and the single guitar/drum part of it though. I think
the "quiet" parts should've been removed and the chorus would fill the
whole song from beginning to end. It's so great! And one of the breaks
consists of soft shoegazer swirling guitars. The vocals are floating
on the music. This track is purely fantastic.
7. non-stop
When me and my girlfriend heard this track the first time, we both
thought of one thing. Ride. I can't pin-point what Ride song it sounds
like, but it's an older one, and I wanted to write a fast review so
I haven't had the time to search through my Ride records. :-) Duet
male vocals, with hitting choruses, and single guitar/drum sections.
(8). garlic (demo)
A Hammond is never wrong :-). This is an extra track, recorded at a
later date than the rest, and I can hear it. The vocals are more
forward, harder. Still close to whispering though. The song is faster
than the other ones too. Both the guitar and the base make out an
attractive red thread, which means that this is also an "impossible
_not_ to tap your foot to" - song.
All in all, this demo is a gem. I'd send a copy to West Side if I
were you, even only if just to see what kind of reply you'd get and
even though most bands on that label seem to be from either the Teenage
Fanclub or Dinosaur Jr school. I love it when more than one person
sings, and two male, stable and good voices really works wonders.
On the down-side: the cover of the demo tape needs more attention
to catch the eyes of the reviewers :-) - that is, if you're going to
send it to some magazines, which I hope you will. SA and Pop for example.
And how about a homepage for Cessna?
Now I'm going to read that other review.
