I just want to make one thing clear. No one sends these spam messages
to anyone personally. Just like everyone else, they send it to
"scan-indie@lysator.liu.se" in order to reach all the subscribers,
and that means that it is the _mailing list_, ie. Scandinavian Indie,
that the message was about (saying that Scandinavian Indie was
subscribed to that mailing list), and not you, Robert. All mailing lists
are subjected to spam mail, some more than others, and Scandinavian Indie
has been amazingly clean from this, for about 3 years, until the idiot
found out that it existed a month or so ago.

Yes, as it happens, this idiot (it's the same one every time) has made
it his purpose in life to make sure that all mailing lists I handle
must be killed, destroyed and removed from the net. Why? I have no idea,
maybe I offended someone at some point in my life?

A) You are perfecly welcome to change your subscription from the "normal"
version, where it is necessary for everyone to be able to send messages
to the list directly, to the "digest" version, where these spam messages
are removed, even though this means that you will not receive the
messages sent to the list directly, but have to wait until the amount
posted to the "normal" list has reached about 40k - that's when a
digest is sent out to the "digest" list subscribers.
B) "if nothing has been done." - Please let me tell a short story. I have
been running mailing lists for about five years. During these five
years, spam mail has been sent to all of my mailing lists, some more
than others. Every time, I have informed the various ISPs at the
originating hosts about the problem, included the offending/commercial/
etc. spam mail complete with headers and message. After that, it is up
to them to take care of the problem (ie. the idiot user on their system).
And that is what I can do about it. I did change the address of one of
my mailing lists once, and made it "moderated" - which was possible
with that list, because it was not meant to be available for everyone
to post to it, but that was when the spam messages dropped in a couple
of times / day - and I did not see any other solution. If I were to
make Scandinavian Indie moderated, it would mean that the whole list
would be a "digest" version. And I don't think anyone would want that.
C) Regarding every spam mail ever sent to any of my lists (including
Scandinavian Indie) - feel free to contact me if you want copies of the
messages I sent to the originator host ISPs and all their answers.
Maybe that would convince you that I *do* something about it.
To calm down some people, here are my messages to the ISPs and their
replies regarding the last spam mail (I only include the answers from
"smb.com" or else this message would be far too long):

The Finnish tape was accidently sent to my parents' address (I myself is
the only one to blame for this of course). This causing a slight delay.
Anyway, I sent the tape to Robert Cumming yesterday, so he should get it
today.
What I thought about the tape? Well, unfortunately I have only listened
to it twice so far but it sounded good. I'll be back when I discover
any certain favourites.

Scandinavian Indie Review: This is melodious singalong rock in the american
school - say _Bon Jovi_, _Richard Marx_.. you know what I am talking about,
stadium-rock. It is as easy as that. Sure, it is extremely tight,
Jamie O'Kane has a fantastic voice, a voice that most people will say "Hey,
I have heard this guy somewhere else! Isn't this... (insert your favourite
melodious american rock band here)" when listening to Blind Rage. Jamie,
when playing guitar, is very clever, very confident. His screaming guitar
parts fits the rest of the music just like a glove. The production and
the recording is extremely slick and professional.
"Yellow Summer Sun" is a beautiful, acoustic piece with fantastic guitars,
lonely drums and Jamie's sad voice really makes me shiver. It is definitely
my favourite song on the album. It is also definitely a radio hit, if played
at nights, whereas the rest of the songs would be played during daytime on
radio stations like Megapol or Radio FM.
This type of music definitely has its audience, though not the Indie one. It
is straightforward rock performed by Jamie O'Kane, _Garry King_ (drums,
percussion, backing vocals) and _Robert Bullock_ (bass, backing vocals).
All doing their job very well too, even though Jamie is the one inevitably
in the foreground. And as everything points to yet another american rock
band, it is pretty interesting to learn that they actually are from the UK.

Last time I checked, this was an international mailinglist.
So in english that would be something like:

Dorian Records - are working on their follow-up to the popular first
compilation CD "A Chance To Shine". The working name is
"True To You" (anyone see the connection?). The new
compilation will be a Double-CD (2CD), and will include loads
of great bands! Ready at this moment are the following Swedish
bands: A Sense of Reason, Curseflower, Doktor Saturn, Dune,
Femton, Gentle Tuesday, The Git Shields, Grape, Hanis, The
Immediates, Kerouac, Korova Milkbar, Lugi, Morning Penguin,
Octopussy, The Odds, Picabo, Popeye, S:t Moores, Sandy Lyle,
Stargazer, Supernova, The Tambureens, Vivid, The Wellmeant.
There will be another 10-15 bands added to this list before
the two discs are full. Planned release month: December.

Fidget - (Mega) are resting after having spent a month in the studio
recording and mixing their upcoming debut single and album. Nina
Natri, the band's restless soul, takes Karate lessons, while
remembering the summer festival gigs. Especially when Liberator
made a hole in the stage at the Angelholm festival and that "Gud
I Brallan" stayed and watched when they played at the Emmaboda
festival. Nina also says there's a rumor saying that there are
plans for a Swedish Pop Festival in Helsinki, Finland! Stay tuned
for more info about this and more! Their debut single is released

HappyDeadMen - (Trampolene/Polydor) 's new album to be released in Japan
in January 1997 (on Polydor) and in Sweden (on Trampolene)
in February 1997 is called "Bullfights Every Sunday". The
album contains 12 songs. The CD cover is designed by Erik
S|derstr|m. A single, "A Lovesong" will also be released
and it contains one extra song not available on the album.
In combination with the Japan release, the band will take
the first available flight there to play a set of tour dates.

Harry Lime - (the Eskilstuna record company)'s new compilation called
"Twist of Lime" has been delayed, and is re-scheduled for
release in November. Bands ready for the compilation are:
Doolittle, Dune, Jumprope (US), Peat and Rottingdean. Each

Lousy - (Sappy) 's 7" single "Kewl" released on Canadian record label Sappy
was reviewed in one of Canada's biggest music papers called Exclaim.
Here's what it said:
"LOUSY - KEWL (SAPPY, BOX 25097, MONCTON, NB E1C 9M9)
This first Canadian release from Sweden's Lousy is a six-song
collection of short punk bursts that eloquently captures restless
melancholy with a equally refreshing here-goes-nothing vocal
technique. Yet amidst all their thrashings, they still had the
smarts to thrown in twists of real rock keyboards. Rock'n'roll
idolizes adolescence, and while Lousy's teen musings about holding
hands, eschewing popularity and not getting a letter returned from
your first love are appealing enough, it's the maturity of self-
realization that's at the core of these songs.

Ludox - (RMD) from Denmark will support The Cardigans on their tour
between October 5th and October 13th! The Cardigans picked the
band themselves from 5 possible candidates. The dates are as
follows:

Prune - are just about to start recording their new demo. The band is
busy recording it from September 26th to 28th, so stay tuned for

Strawberry Songs - the Eskilstuna record company that released a compilation
CD single called "e-pop" a while ago have a success on
their hands. 1000 copies of the CD5 were made, and today
there are about 50 copies left. The CD5 contains what the
label want to call "new-old pop", something they believe
is coming on strong. A sequel to the "e-pop" compilation
is in the making, with a working name of "More e-pop".
Bands ready for the compilation are: Lament, Panic and
S:t Moores. Recording work will start on October 13th,
and everything must be ready by the middle of December,
because the CD5 will accompany the label to next year's
MIDEM (which takes place in January 1997). Release date
is set to the end of January or early February. Another
CD in the making is called "En Ko P} Isen" (A Cow on the
Ice), which is a tribute to the old band "G} } Bada" (Go
and take a bath). Four bands appear on the CD, one Kurdish,
one Finnish (who sounds like Imperiet), one Death Metal
band and one Chinese punk band. More information will

Sulky - (Dolores) are working on demos right now for a full-length album
to be recorded this autumn/winter. The album is planned to be

Hi!
I am a new subscriber writing from Atlanta. I spent the last 7 years in
Malmoe and have built up Blue Studio with my partner(a skoaning). We have
written, recorded and produced our own music as well as other artists. If
you're from Skane, maybe you'd recognize Shamrock, Garry Lee Taylor, Ian
White or Blue? Hmmm. Maybe not. We are currently shifting our studio over
to Atlanta, so we won't be playing the southern Sweden circuit, at least this
year. But it'll be great to read of the happenings in scandinavia anyhow.

Brandgul - (Beat Butchers) appear on _tonight_'s TV program "Musikbyran"
SVT 1, 19.15. If you watch the program, you can expect to see
their brand new video "Kvicksilversand" and an interview with
the band. Here's what was said about the video in a previous
Selected News: Brandgul have spent a couple of days this summer
recording a new video. While recording it at a friend's house,
his neighbor, none other than Gothenburg ice-hockey team
_Vastra Frolunda_'s goal keeper, stuck his head out the window
and asked what they were doing, and gladly accepted the invitation
to join them, fully dressed in his _ice-hockey gear!_ The video
includes breaking of dishes, a goal keeper and body painted girls.

Cardigans - (Trampolene) have a major success on their hands with their
new album "First Band on The Moon". The album is currently
number 1 (international album chart) and number 4 (international/
national album chart) in Japan. The single "Lovefool" is number
1 on the Tokyo Hot 100 Airplay list. All for the second week
running! "Lovefool" is numer 5 (singles) in Finland, number 3
on the M&M Border Breakers List and entered the UK singles
chart at number 21. The album is number 18 (album) in Finland
and entered the Danish album chart at number 38.

Dipper - (Vibrafon) from Malmo (Hansi Friberg - manager) who also appear
in the next issue of Sound Affects, was signed to Vibrafon Records
this week. In the list of other artists they are influenced by,
they name Wire, Jesus Lizard, Magazine and Moby! They first single
called "Butterfinger" is released in October. (Source: Topp40)
Loosegoats - (StartRec) has kicked out member Jens Lowius (vocals, guitar)
right when the band is on their way to strike gold. The reasons
behind what happened differs depending on who you talk to (ie.
the band or Jens himself) but according to the band, it was
because "he was a bad guitar player, and we didn't agree on
some things". Watch the Selected News for Jens' story. The
band celebrated the release of their new album yesterday in
Stockholm at Eldorado/Blue Funky, and are apparently looking

Mazarine Street - (Fine Tone) are going on tour throughout Europe together
with Beck! The band's recent gig at Studion in Stockholm
saw Japanese visitors from Burrn! (Source: Topp40)
Starlet - (MVG) was finally and thoroughly signed to MVG Records! After
a long summer and autumn of rumors and "not quite signed yet"
messages from the record company, the contract was finally

Subject: tape overload
The Swedish, Finnish and Estonian tapes have all now passed through my
grubby fingers and I've got waaaay too much music to listen to. The
Swedish one was much the most eclectic, but then I like Kimmo and
Sami's (compilers of the Finnish and Estonian tapes respectively)
taste in music, so they sounded fine on first listen. Well, actually
I've only really heard half the Estonian one so far. And I liked the
Deep Turtle track... weird.
Now I'm looking forward to the Latvian tape... Hvar finnes alle
norrmen og dansker?
