..it's not like the jon spencer blues explosion hasn't been featured in
magazines before pop put them on the cover.. hell, the guy who wrote the
article didn't even know about sonic youth until '92 (see early "da" pull
out"), which doesn't exactly give him a lot of credibility, considering he
is well over 30 and has supposedly been writing about underground rock
music for 15 years. and i would believe that goes with, for example, the
jon spencer blues explosion as well. he has probably known about them for
a couple of years, but makes it sound like he discovered jon spencer when
pussy galore's cover of "exile on mainstreet" came out in, what?, 1987.

ps. note that this is not a slam at just one person, what i believe goes
for the whole pop-staff. i mean, since exactly when did andres lokko
become this big fan of punky garagish 90's rockabilly bands like the
make-up and rocket from the crypt? what's next; pop doing a full issue on
american 80's underground rock, featuring bands like big black and fugazi,
claming the whole staff has been greatly influenced by all these bands and
at they been writing about primal scream, stevie wonder and sade just to
make a living.

Don't say to much now. Remember that 22 Pistepirkko had a radio hit ("Just
a little bit more") here a couple of years ago. On the other hand there
wasn't many times that "22" was said in finnish.

Don't you think there is a reason for a band to dump their record company?
Either its money (nothing wrong with that) or perhaps they just think their
record company sucks. And whats wrong for a band to make money, don't you
think that they have bills to pay ?

Of course there's nothing wrong in making money (well, OK - that depends a
little on how you make them). I guess no one would say no if he/she was
offered a million crowns for nothing. But - referring to a discussion that
has been going on here for a while - you could use the same argument for
EMA-Telstar and PoP: don't you think they have bills to pay to? But OK - I
don't know the details in the Wannadies-deal and I don't know the details
about their economic situation (or the economic situation of those working
at EMA-Telstar or POP). I guess I'm just angry about having to wait for the
new Wannadies-album until 1997.

sounds nice, tho I'd love to some day hear the FIRST Swedish Indie tape.
Anyone know where it is currently?? I'm on the lists, that much I
know, but out of the 4 or 5 tapes circulating, the only one I ever
received was the Icy Icy tape.

Hey, I just heard the band Petrol (from Vasteras) on Musikjournalen Pop
tonight, and boy do they sound like Lush or what?! I know we discussed
them about a year ago on the list, when they were signed to Warner Chappel/
Scandinavia and were chosing between the Telegram, Diesel and Sony labels,
and Jan Sundstrom said we should expect a single within the next couple of
months (and that was in February), so I guess the single is out now?!
Does anyone know on what label?

Scandinavian Indie Review: This is not a regular demo tape in any way.
First, it comes from _Brazil_ and second it consists of songs from the
_"Broken Wings"_ demo plus a couple of new extra songs as well, which
makes it just as long as a normal full length album! Though in this review,
the whole tape is considered as one single demo, because it is a demo. With
that out of the way, let's go for the music!
The first thing that comes to your mind when thinking about music from Brazil
is not exactly floating, dreamy and compact guitar-walls together with
echo-filled, eerie vocals is it? Well, it is time to think again, because
that is exactly what we have here.
The base is made out of beautiful, powerful, roaring, heavily distorted,
thundering drone electric guitars that makes me want to bite my teeth and
scream. A castle would not have enough walls to satisfy these guitars.
Sometimes we hear them together with lonely, alarming guitars with the one
goal to join the roaring ones, warning them about the forthcoming day of
doom and destruction. _'Shadows Crying'_ and _'I Am So Tired'_ are perfect
examples. The last one of them being my personal favourite song on the tape,
even tough the vocals there are not very pleasant, the music, the alarming
electric guitar, the distorted wall-of-doom guitars... it is just
immeasurably gorgeous.
Sometimes we hear them together with swirly, jingling, and a lot happier
guitars watching the sunrise on a beautiful summer morning. Examples of
this can be found in _'Nabo Is Dead'_, _'Curfew'_, which is fantastic,
both music and vocals, and I just have to mention the end of _'Mrs. D.'_,
which is utterly and totally mind bogglingly a wonder in itself! Distorted
electric guitar walls behind a single and lonely, echoing and whining
electric guitar.
Over these walls of sound climbs single, desolate, monotone and sad male
vocals, revealing the story that lies behind each and every tone, expressing
deepest regrets, and happy moments. Heavy echo effects makes them float
on top of the heavily distorted electric guitars. As if they were outside
the room. Untouchable and unreachable.
The other songs, _'Some Drops of Sugar In My Heart'_ and _'I Can't Stop To
Smile'_ for example, are still filled with dreamy, monotone and dronish
vocals, but instead of electric guitar-walls, there are gorgeous acoustic
guitars, sending shivers down my back. They are simply that fantastic. They
kind of remind me of _Antonio Banderas_ in _Desperado_, you know, at the
beginning of the movie. Especially _'Some Drops..'_ which is full of pick
guitars, and it sounds fantastic!
Two songs on the tape made me snap out of my dream world, because I am almost
positive that I have heard them before. _'Shadows Crying'_ which sounds like
a _Front Line Assembly_, _Ministry_ or _Front 242_ song (I can't say which
one for certain, because I don't have any of their records), and _'That's
Enough'_ which sounds like _U2_. Though I am only talking about the music,
and not the vocals.
If you are into drone indie pop, shoegazer style, like _My Bloody Valentine_,
_Flying Saucer Attack_ or even the music _Lush_ made early in their career
(swirly, jingling guitars), you are bound to love this!

Scandinavian Indie Review: Comespace comes from _Brazil_ and believes in the
short and simple way when making demo tapes. That usually leaves a reviewer
hanging somewhere between deciding how to describe their actual sound as a
band or just go for each song separately, if the songs sound totally
different. I have chosen to go for each song separately.
_'Float'_ is a noisy, slow and experimental piece. Experimental because of
the "rain drop" effects/filters they have used here and there, something I
have never heard before. Noisy because after a pretty silent start, it turns
into a complete concrete wall of sounds. The electric guitars, the drums, the
bass. It sounds like everything but the bass is plugged into every possible
effect box they could find. Slow because the both the music and the vocals
are dronish, dreamy and somewhat monotone. We are talking music based around
repetition, minima and droning, and at the same time, they have left most of
the standard verse/chorus parts behind in order to reach the main goal; to
create a common whole with their music. A cacophonous wall of sound without
a fixed beginning or end, where no distinct and prominent features are
supposed to sound separated from each other.
_'A Most Enjoyable Day'_, on the other hand, is fantastic! Amazing!
Beautiful! Yes, it is completely and totally brilliant! So perfect. So
professional that I am stunned. Mouth open, eyes closed, on my back on
the floor (sounds like a great piece of lyrics, doesn't it?) I can't help
but laugh. It generates that euphoric feeling inside me! Like the first
time I heard Slowdive (my favourite band in the whole world, ever). I am
not saying that they sound like Slowdive, only that this song recreates
that very feeling I had when I first heard them. What I do think of, when
I hear this, and when it comes to the vocals, is early early _Ride_.
Dreamy, clear and beautiful male vocals that are "out there somewhere" on
top of the distorted electric guitar-wall that moves throughout the whole
song from the start to the end like a red thread. It is guitar-walls like
these that can make me cry out of sheer and utter pleasure, and I am not
ashamed to admit it. It is just so surprising to find such a professional
sounding song here, right after the somewhat experimental _'Float'_! The
music and the vocals here.. it all just sounds so great together!
If these guys had access to a professional recording studio, the shoegazer,
drone and dreampop throne would be found in Brazil! That is to say; someone
better put their songs, or at least 'A Most Enjoyable Day' on CD and send
me a copy immediately!

Hi all. I'm not too sure about how many non-Scandinavians we have on the
list these days, but for those in North America who miss my posts in other
places, I'll mention I've recently received a new shipment of records from
North of No South. And as usual, having trouble keeping things in stock

not to use up too much of everyone else's bandwidth. Especially as I'm not

To All Swedish subscribers:
This Pete from sunny Copenhagen.
I decided to relocate to Stockholm in a month or so.
Thus, I'll be making a couple trips to Stockholm from Copenhagen in a few
weeks with all my shit; stereo, computer, CDs, skateboard shit, etc..., and
I take E4 from the ferry/Helsingborg.
I'm looking for passengers who are en route/going to Stockholm/Copenhagen.
Basically, I could take only 1 person on the way up, because of the limited
space. From Stockholm, I could take more people, because of more space.
The car is the size of a 1995/6 VW Polo. To give you an idea about time,
the ferry docked around 3 in Helsingborg, and I was in St. Eriksplan @7:30
(and I even got a little lost). I'm an experienced driver: turned 25 a
month ago, got my license on my 16th birthday, made numerous roadtrips from
San Jose to LA / San Diego (7-8 hours) from age 16-18, drove around the US
and Canada twice for 5 weeks from age 17-19, a few speeding tickets, no
accidents.
I expect everybody (including me) to split the gas; everything should be
fair and square.
I would want to leave on a Thurs. night and return Sun. afternoon; the first
trip should be on 14 or 15/11.

Hej Igen,
Parking in Stockholm is a total bitch. There are parking meters all the way
into the outer areas. We went out to this area where all the newspapers
are, like fucking 7 miles outside of downtown, and there were these parking
meters there. My friends told me that one has to be quick to leave before 8
and pay the meter until 6. I think this is how your city discourages
traffic. That's cool, but that policy is pretty strict. I've never seen so
many parking meters outside a downtown area. It seems like the parking
meter industry sells the most parking meters per / city meter in Europe.
Correct me if I'm wrong. Yes...I've been to many cities, but I've never
seen parking meters at this scale before.
Anyways, I'm still going to try to devise a way to reduce the cost of
parking in Stockholm, even if I don't have a car. I'll think of it as a
side project, touring around cafes making speeches and holding workshops.

Subject: Moving to Stockholm
Hej Igen,
I'll be moving to Stockholm in a few weeks, and I was looking to rent a
room, preferably in/near the center or Södmalm(?).
To sum it up, I'm giving up my job in Copenhagen, as a Marcomm Writer, and
returning a car I've been renting since May to be in Stockholm , because it
seems like Swedes have a clue about indie/punk music. Plus, there seems
like there's something to do/see every night. It's a killer town. I've
been to Europe 8x, since 7/91. I've been to several towns, and I thought
Copenhagen was the town for me, but the scene here really sucks. Thus, I
can't justify any reason to stay here. I feel that Stockholm/Sweden is one
of European the towns/countries that closely resembles an/the American
city/concept, when it comes to the indie scene. Your culture seems like you
really welcome American trends / influences more than other European
countries. I observed that clubs "try," radio stations "try," local labels
"try," bands "try" to support eachother and open channels of discussion.
Overall, it seems like people there try to do the best they can to support
their scene, and that's very impressive to see. Many towns/countries I've
visited don't have a fucking clue; this one does.
(I want to add a footnote that I might change my opinion after living
there.)
Enough of the rationalizing, I have enough money to support myself. I'm
neat and clean. I'll look for jobs in the computer field as a consultant or
correct English papers for students. We'll see. I want to be there until
January. If I don't get what I want, then I'm splitting back home to
Silicon Valley. I want to give myself adequate time to struggle and become
frustrated, before going home.
Likewise, I'm renting a 21m2 room in a 3 bedroom flat in
Fredericksberg/Copenhagen for 1.900Dkr. with el & varme if you know anybody
who's interested.
Any suggestions will be welcome. Yes...I know Stockholm is a difficult town
to find housing, especially short-term stays. I don't want to reinvent the
wheel.

Hmm, I feel a bit guilty here! :} I just returned from a lengthy stay in
South Africa/Botswana, and discovered the tape in my mail back here. I'm
sending it to Ulf Harnhammar today.
And there is a second copy of this tape out somewhere, i think Sean Kyle
Price has it now, and then there are two more to go until Chris get's
it, according to the list. Don't despair!

A valid question indeed. Where are the tapes!? I've received the Icelandic
Indie and Finnish Indie tapes so far. Then there's the Estonian Indie
tape (where is it now?), and the Swedish Indie tape (I know I know, I'm
last on that list, but where is it?!)
Umm, * Christopher Kakkos in Greece * - have you received the Swedish
Indie tape yet?
And then someone was supposed to compile a Norwegian Indie compilation
as well, right? Someone?

I wouldn't blame the band for something like that - I guess it's just
something that has been waiting happen for quite some time now, and I've
heard about a lot of "strange things" happening at MNW lately. For
example, what was the last album you saw released on MNW (or any of it's
sub-labels)?

hi everyone!
i'm new to this list, so i thought i'd introduce myself briefly and then
ask a few questions.
i got into this list from reading about scandinavian bands on the indiepop
mailing list. i'm really into quite a few mostly swedish bands at the
moment, mostly red sleeping beauty (+ associated projects) and popsicle
and the cardigans but i also like cloudberry jam and komeda. on the other
scandianvian bands tip i like super and false by west. most of what i
know about scandinavian music comes from the indiepop list, and also from
a tape made for me by sami during the indiepop list tape swap (sami are
you on this list?).
and now a quick question: by a fluke i am getting the opportunity to go
to iceland for 3 days! i am really excited about this because i've wanted
to go to iceland forever (i'm an archaeologist and a big science geek so
i've always been into the geology of iceland). i'll be there from
thursday november 28th to sunday december 1st, and will be staying in
rejkyavik. could anyone tell me about any cool places to go/things to do?
i checked the web site for this list and there doesn't seem to be anything
going on in rejkyavik in terms of tours and stuff, but surely there must
be some fun clubs and good record stores to peruse? anything that anyone
can tell me would be most appreciated!!!
anyway, i hope to learn much more about scandinavian music from the
discussion on this list!

Subject: Next Swedish Indie Tape Thoughts
Hmm, considering a couple of "interest requests" I have received about the
next Swedish Indie compilation, I'm thinking of putting the songs on a CD
this time, to make it easier as well as getting better sound, no matter how
many people make copies of it, but I don't have access to recordable CD
equipment.
Are there any thoughts on the list about this? Anyone in favor of, or against
this project? And more important, does anyone have CDR equipment?!
