Subject: Cardigans in Q
This latest issue of Q magazine, Britain's biggest music monthly I think, has a
two-page interview with The Cardigans, which strangely doesn't mention the fact
that they're playing here this month.. talks mostly about how annoyed they were
that Life made people see them as easy-listening, and how First Band on the
Moon is much less commercial. Also anbout how huge they are in Japan - the only
country outside Scandinavia to have release Emmerdale!
I can't scan it in, and it's too long to type, but if people want I can pick
out some good bits...

Subject: Psyched Up Janis/Ben Folds Five/Boo Radleys
Hi,
yesterday I went to see Ben Folds Five (from Chapel Hill, USA, sounds
kind of like a mix between Jellyfish, early Billy Joel and the
Presidents of the USA.) in Malmo (that's Malmoe in English :) and it
was a good show, I can't remember that I've smiled through a whole
concert ever before. I'm still smiling, BTW. :)
SI-content: The opening act, Psyched Up Janis from Denmark, were a
big surpise to me. I saw them in Roskilde a couple of years ago and
all I remember is that I thought that they sucked. But either they've
changed or... maybe I was just too prejudiced about Danish bands
BLX (before LudoX :). I think I still am about Norwegian and Finnish
bands, sorry, I can't help it. Like every band from Finland that I've
heard (that sings in English) has got an IMO annoying accent. Is it
too late for me to join the Finnish tape chain? I'd like to find out
that I'm wrong. And Norwegian bands, well, just the fact that they're
from Norway... :) Well, no, but actually I don't think that I've ever
heard a band from Norway that sounded something close to interesting.
Are there any? Back to Denmark: when I talked to Filip from LudoX at
Emmabodafestivalen he said that the most annoying thing about playing
in Sweden was, if you disregard everybody talking Swedish with him
even though he told them that he didn't understand it, that everywhere
they played there was always someone there who mentioned D.A.D. Hmm...
I don't know why I told you that.. it had something to do with the
whole prejudice-thingy though. Anyways, Psyched Up Janis sounded pretty
good, sort of like Ned's Atomic Dustbin meets Nirvana meets Superchunk
meets Hoodoo Gurus. Oh, well, don't ask then. :)

Well, at least not in my ears. Jesus Jones meets (oops, here I go again:)
Oasis meets Mr Big's acoustic guitars meets glam rock and gets produced
by someone who thinks he's Trent Reznor... no thanks. But maybe it's
just me.

By the way... isn't it funny to see Expressen Fredag list
Ray Wonder as a foreign band, and Psyched Up Janis as both a Swedish
and a foreign band? Yes it is.
And some non-scan stuff as well: Is it just me, or isn't CJ Bolland's
"Sugar Daddy" (or whatever it is called) almost completely similar to
Prodigy's "Poison", only slower and with some extra slow parts thrown
in here and there? Try to sing Prodigy's poison lyrics to it, and you'll
see what I mean...

That feeling is fantastic.. I've only had it when it comes to Slowdive,
Verve and Charlatans concerts though.. :-)

I have to agree with you on that, though I haven't heard any other
Danish bands with this rattling guitar/pop sound than Ludox.. I
remember seeing some at Roskilde last year, but I don't remember
what they were called. I think we have too few subscribers from
Denmark on this list (well, we do have 5 subscribers from Denmark).
Anyway, we'd know alot more about the scene there if someone with
more information about it wrote something about it. Right?

Ha ha ha! You're going to pay for that! (we have 15 subscribers from
Finland, and I think that's the reason we know a lot more about this
scene) :-) IMHO the most interesting bands today are from Finland in fact.
See, you have everything from jazzy pop (ex. Super) to as much lo-fi as you
can take (ex. Larry & The Lefthanded) and more. And of course, some do have
that Finnish accent, but not very many that I know of, and if they do, I
think that it sounds good - you know, I like Fidget! :-) Anyway, I'm sure
a bunch of people will write more about this, but I'd really like to
recommend these Finnish bands, all of them very good (my personal extreme
favourites within **'s), sing in english (without Finnish accent) except
Wilma who's got Finnish vocals/lyrics:
All Stars: from Nokia, have released a couple of demos so far, that I
know of. And okay, Meri (vocals) does have a Finnish accent.
The one I have heard has got one poppy pop song with a fast
beat, one slow and beautiful, dreamy thing, and one slow
"end" song. Female vocals.
*Cessna*: from Tampere have also released a couple of demos, but are now
just about to release a bunch of stuff on different record labels
around the world. I can't say enough good things about this band,
because they are simply fantastic. My favourite songs does have
(I think) early Ride influences though. Male vocals.
Circle: just released the album "Zopalki" on Bad Vugum. Dreamy, guitar-
filled and synth experimental stuff I would say. Don't know
much more about them though. Male vocals.
*Coo*: from Tampere have released one (?) demo tape and the "Heavenly Blue"
EP on Tangerine Records. Etheral, floating, guitar-wall orgasm, with
music I'm so amazed can be created, that _no one_ should miss them.
That is all I am going to say, and I mean it. Male vocals.
*Dada Girl*: from Nokia have released 2 demos that I know of, both really
really good. _Amazing_ singer, they should have a sign on them
that said "pop hit warning". Beautiful and simple pop songs
together with speedy Beatles-esque pearls. Music that makes
me smile. They are most probably going to appear on the
January Dorian compilation CD. Male vocals.
*Lemonator*: have released one EP "EP" on Grandpop Records, which I
said had "Nirvana" vocals in one of the songs, and "Naked/
Popsicle" sound in my review. They are now signed to Warner
and release a single on monday, and their debut album early
next year. I think they are from Helsinki? Male vocals.
The Pansies: well, I have almost no information at hand about them,
but Sam Shingler (vocals) used to be the singer in Coo,
and I have referred to him as the Tim Burgess of Finland.
I know they have a record deal with a major company now,
but they have also released a single "Fruit" on Poko Records
back in 1994, on which two of the three tracks are really
good (esp. 'come ovah', which I think Oasis would liked to
have written, or something!). Male/Female vocals.
Super: have released two singles, the latest called "Tempted" on Odor
Records, and are recording their debut album. This is jazzy, lounge,
bossa, Cardigans/Cloudberry Jam-ish pop, though _a lot_ more lounge.
Intreaguing lyrics, and to say the least, interesting female
vocals, riding high on the scales. The latest single is actually
very good (at least the two last songs), the middle one easy
listening, pleasant sunday afternoon, or night radio music, and
the last is a fast catchy pop pearl that I can see Jennie from
Cloudberry Jam do "her dance" to. :-) The last song is actually the
best Super song I have heard, and I think it does have something
to do with the way Minna stretches and bends her voice, which
I haven't heard her do before.
Wilma: also a bit closer to the mainstream soft "pop" area with their
slower ballad-like songs, but they also have their guitar-wall
moments. Released three albums, the latest one called "Suuri
Valkea" (BMG) and the one before that "Claudius" (Herodes).
I think they are from Helsinki, but I'm not sure. Male/Female
vocals.

Heh heh, well I have a feeling that you'll not have to pay for this,
because there are only 4 subscribers from Norway... :-) Of course,
there are bands from Norway playing jazzy pop to lo-fi and whatnot
as well, but, like with Denmark, there aren't too many here on the
list to tell us more about it! A Norwegian Indie compilation tape (for
a tape chain) is in the making by the way! Though I'd like to recommend
some Norwegian bands anyway, and strangely all the good ones, but one,
I have heard are from Bergen! (maybe the Skelleftea of Norway?) And as
there aren't too many people from Norway on the list, I've included
some info as well:
Cane: An indie pop band also from Bergen. Female vocals, they have been
described as a mixture between Bjork and Nina Hagen! Cane are signed
to Warner Records, and will release their debut album in the beginning
of 1997.
Peachfuzz: Young, unsigned indie band from Bergen. Two girls and two boys.
Female vocals. They started last spring, but have already
impressed a lot of people. Charming, Slowdivish, popish, naivish.
Sister Sonny: A Sonic Youth like band from Bergen. Unsigned, promising,
unpredictable (in a good way). Unfortunately they are not sure if
they want to put 100% in their music or not, just wait and see...
Sloane: An indie pop band from Bergen. Unsigned, up and coming, charming,
melodic.
Twigs: Fast and slow, a bit trashy and lo-fi, rattling guitars-, indie pop
band from Bergen. Female vocals, and it sounds somewhat like The
Breeders mixed with Dinosaur Jr/Sonic Youth actually. They have
released a 6-song CDEP called "Beast" on Straight Blokes Records. The
EP is really good, so you should definitely contact the band if this

Velvet Belly: from Kristiansand. Beautiful etheral pop with female vocals.
Probably the most known Norwegian indie band outside the
country. Live they are more like Slowdive with effect box
guitar mayhem, than on their records which are more quiet

This is all I can help out with when it comes to information about good
(IMO) bands in these countries unfortunately, so now I leave it up to

You missed Aknestik, you philistine you! So for the sake of
completeness:
*Aknestik* from Oulu are the quintessential Finnish pop band.
They've had four albums out, all chock-full of
classic melodies. They're influenced as much by Finnish
schlager as by British indie and the Nordic punk
tradition, and are probably the only band that'll
ever get you singing in phonetic Finnish. Lyrically
they're Weezer under the midnight sun just as they
realise the vodka's about to run out. Lead gutarist
Kai Latvalehto is one of Northern Europe's best-kept
secrets.

Russian Love sing in English, have really awful lyrics, but
musically they're tight and polished and produce
irresistible rock with tunes and bags of attitude.
They come from Oulu too.
BTW Aknestik are planning (a) a demo in English, with their eye on the
Japanese market (Jokap{iv{ and Hellemaa), and (b) a greatest hits
album for the New Year...

Do you know that style of music at all? Blome.....funny, I heard about an
act by the name of "Bloem" who is from the Netherlands, but who GREATLY
resembles and sings/sounds like a certain female from Iceland name Bjork.

They claim to be the world's worst rock 'n' roll band, wear
enormous hair-dos and ludicrous pointy shoes, say ``Thank you
very many'' to their audiences -- and have made two gold albums,
played to crowds of up to 200,000 in Germany, the United States,
Japan and beyond, and starred in two cult films.
Not to mention selling their own very successful brands of
super-strong beer and vodka and customized mobile phones.
Big-brother Sweden gave the world ABBA and Roxette. From
Finland come The Leningrad Cowboys, bringing together east and
west in an act combining irony and slapstick in equal measure.
For the unhip few who are not aware of this rock sensation:
they are 10 Finns and two go-go girls, all with very silly hair,
who profess to be talentless and often get rave reviews, even
though their set always features tractors.
They first made musical history in 1993 when they staged a
huge, free open air concert in Helsinki with Russia's Red Army
Choir.
Now they are planning to repeat their relentless parody of
rock classics, rock stardom and themselves in Moscow's Red
Square next spring.
It is clearly a rare privilege to talk to a Leningrad
Cowboy. Vocalist Mato Valtonen, who lies about many things and
does not look a day under 40, spared a few minutes from his
hectic schedule to be interviewed.
Q: How many fans do you have?
A: I think none.
Q: Why do you call yourselves the ``world's worst'' band?
A: We think we qualify.
Q: What is your message to the world?
A: Let's have a party.
Q: What is your opinion of Michael Jackson?
A: He must be good. Otherwise he wouldn't be that famous.
Q: And Oasis?
A: They're not as bad as we are. I think they play their own
instruments. That's not a bad start for a band.
Q: Do you play your own instruments?
A: I can play a little bit guitar but the others don't let me.
Q: What do tractors have to do with it?
A: Tractors are the most stylish way to move.
Q: Does anyone in the band have Russian blood?
A: Not really. Tundra blood.
Q: What is your favorite colour?
A: What's the color of beer?
Q: Have you ever had a problem with spots?
A: All the time. We are all 18 years old in this band.

A: Actually we don't use hair gel. It's willpower. It's a
sort of hair erection in a way. If you are positive it's bigger.

A: We were born in a sauna. We get our power from the sauna.
I was in the sauna this morning.
Q: How long do you spend in the sauna?
A: As long as possible. It depends how much beer you have --
sometimes overnight. One time we were in the sauna for 28 hours.
That time we had lots of beer with us.
Q: What is your greatest achievement?
A: Tractors and fishing.

No - this is definitely a band from Iceland, and they have male vocals
(mostly) - I got their CD the other day, and because we're talking about
them right now, I thought that, while I'm at it, why not write a review
thingie (and I'll use the information you posted in it too! Thanks! :-))

Scandinavian Indie Review:
You have heard of Bloem from Holland, who is said to sound a bit like
Bjork. Well, here is Blome from Iceland, and no, that's not the same band.
There's nothing even close to Bjork in Blome. As far as I can make out from
the Icelandic language on the sleeve, they're from Reykjavik, and the members
are: Gretar Mar Olafsson, Holmsteinn Ingi Halldorsson, Ivar Pall Jonsson and
Petur Thor Sigurdsson.
They sing in English, and have Male/Female (mostly male though) vocals,
sometimes disted, sometimes not. On two of the songs the Sting Quartet "Hux"
has joined them, with cellos, violins, etc. Those songs are mostly acoustic,
and actually very very good. Dark and eerie pieces. The other songs have
electric (and acoustic) guitars. And on two of these songs the "Hinn Himneski"
choir has joined the band, though I'm not very impressed by that - the songs
sound great without the choir though.
Their sound then.. well, Ivar Pall's (vocals, guitar, "raddir" (what's
that?) voice sounds like that guy in The Cult in "Water Juice", but other than
that I'd say it sounds like they have found influences from the Beatles, The
Boo Radleys and Radiohead (something they also agree with), as well as The
Cult. Sometimes dist on the guitars, and sometimes not.
My favourite song (which I think the band could go far with) is "Cliche",
Ivar Pall going from his hoarse voice to singing out loud, kind of Ray Wonder-
ish even. Acoustic and disted electric guitars mixed into a perfect blend.
Duet male vocals in the choruses ontop of a wall of electric guitars. Slower
parts with a single acoustic guitar, bass and drums transforming into a single
alarming electric guitar, drums and bass cuts and finally evolving into
acoustic and electric guitars together, with a harder setting.
My second favourite song on the album is definitely "Stars" which has disted
guitars, organ, and Ivar Pall with his hoarse, whispering voice. And you know
these three things always create something I can't resist. :-) Of course
there's also bass and drums.
"Symbolic" has got female vocals by Frida Maria Hardardottir, and she does
really sound close to Madonna! Or is it because together with the violins and
cello, it all makes me think of some of her songs? That is probably more
likely. A concert hall song.
The band has got a real gem in Ivar Pall Jonsson though, who writes all the
lyrics and the music, plays guitars and sings. And his voice is very confident
and very pleasant to listen to.
I'm desperately trying to find a Swedish band, or in fact, any band I could
compare them to, to make it easier for everyone else to understand better what
they sound like, but I just can't. Which I think is good in a way as well,
though I would like to be able to put a finger on something in their sound,
something that would enable me to say that they have a "whole" sound. But I
can't. Let me just say that they have a couple of probable hits in there, and
that it might not be enough for a whole album, but then again, when was the
last time one bought an album with nothing but hits?

Well, I have to agree with Hans that it is pretty strange that you haven't
heard of them before. They even have their own beer (which is so so, but
the label looks extremely good), they have made movies, and been around
for as long as I can remember, but the last thing I heard was that they
were about to split up (and that was this summer)!?
Oh, I guess I should have read the interview before I wrote that, but
what the hell... :-)

Aquadays - from Gothenburg has found a replacement for Klara Albinsson,
who recently left the band. The new girl's name i Sara, and
that's about all we have found out so far! But, as this means
that the band will continue to create gorgeous music, we are

Cloudberry Jam - (Stockholm) yes that is right. Stockholm Records are
licensing Cloudberry Jam from NONS. A worldwide release,
promotion etc. is planned for the band. Everything that is
released by CBJ is therefor released on Stockholm Records

Fireside - (StartRec) appears on Alternative Nation on MTV Europe on
Tuesday November 19th, 1996! Nick Hutchings at Alt.Nation
brings the news: "Fireside - the Swedish Fugazi are dropping
into the studio to chew the cud with Toby and take their pick
of the underground." This week (Nov. 12th) is Aphex Twin night,

Mainstream - was the name of the fanzine with independent content that Daniel
Claesson (Fidget) and his friend Patrik Lindgren made early in
their careers. They managed to release four issues, before they
both went to a larger publication, evening newspaper "Goteborgs

Phlegm - is a band from Stockholm. They have released three cassettes on
Stockholm label Loosercore, and one cassette on UK label Bacchanalian
Revel. If you are a completist when it comes to issues of the Sound
Affects magazine, you'll find demo reviews in there somewhere as well.

Slowball Recordings - is a record label in Stockholm with a homepage in Holland
(!). The label has just released a 7" single with the US
band "Push Kings" (who were single of the autumn in the
latest issue of Sound Affects, though not with _this_
single). The label has also released a compilation tape
with the following bands: Mountain Goats, Push Kings,
Will Simmons, Nothing Painted Blue (USA), National
Heroes, Brown Tower (UK), Bingo Trappers, Furtips

Smash Hit Wonders - (SunSpot) have a showcase planned for November 21st
in Stockholm at "Hannas Kallare" thrown together with
the release of their debut album "Love Your Wife".
