Well, the same goes for the Jigsaw release, but you really shouldn't blame good old Chris McFarlane for the delay, as the only reason for it is that the band, being the incompetent slackers they are, have not been able to finish the layout for the sleeves in time. However, at this very moment everything is just about ready and the rest will be up to the label. The release might be delayed a bit more, if Chris sticks to his plan to release the Cessna 7" simultaneously with the Rocketship 7" he is putting out - nobody knows if Dustin has even completed the tracks yet... According to the swedish fanzine "ettnollett" (# 20+5) they have released two records. The debut was a five-track CD ("Under the influence of bad weather) on Borderline records in 1994. Just recently they have released a 7" single (s/t) on the british label Pandemonium Records. According to ettnollett they are also planning a new album (this number of ettnollett is a few months old, so the work may have progressed further by now). Ho! /Micke ----------------------------- Date: Mon, 17 Feb 1997 18:29:01 +0000 From: siesta@get.es Subject: Re: Siesta 54 out! Red Sleeping Beauty Hi all! Soundtrack is out now! Place your order to youe fave mailorder or distributor (Roundabout, Cowly Owl, Mind the Gap, Jigsaw, Shelflife, Border.... or Siesta). Here is the review produced by the beloved Stephen Wood: It's 4 A.M., in an apartment just outside of Washington D.C. I'm sitting in a room dimly lit by the solitary glow from my computer screen suffering from an acute lack of sleep and badly in need of a shower. Outside, a tepid breeze saunters up from the south, easing through bare trees to settle on the the ground & turning patches of dirty snow into brown muddied lawns. The streets are empty but for a few scattered police cars, taxis and the occasional tow truck out prowling private lots aiming to yank valued 4 wheel family members off to far distant lots in exchange for inflationary ransoms. At this hour the ice cream shops are closed down, the refrigerator has been raided of the last of the frozen Mars bars and the TV is sadly void of anything I'm in need of. All in all a rather squalid setting. A mere week ago such a situation would have been a pressing concern, bringing with it a dampening of enthusiasms and a descent into the glummest of moods. Mercifully the advent of a new RSB album has changed all this, having brought on a quickening of the heart & a sense of wonder about my stay on this planet. Soundtrack is indeed the kind of intimate gossamer ticket to guide us all through our days and ease us towards dreams at night. Dipping into "Soundtrack" is like emerging from a cold, blustery day into a house where you sit by the fireplace with a steaming mug of cafe au lait in your hands. Your CD player never had it so good! Thirteen songs of lilting pop brilliance wrapped up in horns, flutes, handclaps and sealed with a kiss from Stockholm. RSB is a fabulous group of scintillating kids delivering short (to leave the listener wanting more) guitar or synth-melody pieces chock full of hooks and catchy bridges. Ooh, don't forget some of the finest-sing a-long choruses to be found anywhere! They are a breath of sonic beauty; I simply can't fathom why they aren't wildly famous and loved beyond a loyal cadre of pop aficionados, college djs and those indie fans who patrol small shops looking for the manic pop thrill of song and fable. Having Siesta, one of the best indiepop labels, behind then will be a great boon to their getting the audience they are both ready for (they've been around since '89), and worthy of. Do not hesitate to give this album a long look. We live in times that seem to look askance on pure pop music, as if we had overdosed in the sixties & seventies when the radio was awash with flat out pop bands and haven't cleared our heads yet. There seems to be a deep suspicion about bands that deal in melody, chorus and hooks - the inescapable charm of a well written love dressed in jangly guitars and haunting vocals is almost something to be mistrusted or at the very least held out at arm's length. NO! Reach out and embrace. I was thinking about this the other day and remembered something written by John Carbonaro is his excellent fanzine Soft White Underbelly: "if punk is partly about achieving separation through tension and relief (the spice of life), pop music is about a collective where familiarity is not sameness, and longing is not complacency. Where a new song about love won or lost is no less inviting _just_ because it's the millionth one you've heard. Apart from content, melody and hooks are about deliberate accessibility that does not necessarily dilute a unique or universal standpoint. It is for our collective unconscious a summer fest that runs from day to night and never really ends." RSB is a band that is unafraid to ride that wave of pure melody. Just check out Summer At It's Best, Soul Provider, Certainly, Young Pretenders and you'll find yourself amidst unabashed pop that looks at the everyday world of being in love, contemplating the seasons, riding a bike or even one's choice in food with refreshing clarity and with tunes that you'll be humming for weeks. This is a band which has consistently met and even surpassed my expectations For the past 4 years. Oh sure, a lingering doubt as I sprint to the stereo tearing off the wrappings that maybe _this_ will be the first recording that somehow doesn't shine as brightly, that fails to make one's head start spinning in that blissful pop trance we all live for. Sheesh, not to worry this time around 'cause "Soundtrack" joins a long line of standout material that represents the very best of what I love about pristine pop music in the 90's. Shimmering girl/shy boy vocals, guitars that glisten & jangle, cool infectious bass lines, and orchestration that puts you into a swoon! How can you not get swept up in the deliciousness of it all? Simply put, Red Sleeping Beauty is a very romantic, dreamy band that has earned a reputation for putting out some of the catchiest material while avoiding the pitfalls of being sweet or cloying. They are a definite part of what's making Scandinavia a very cool place to look for some fine, fine music! RSB is a band that makes the music that you'll be wanting to live your life to - don't be foolish enough to deny yourself the exquisite pleasure of being caught up in the splendor! And as to the strangeness of them playing together: I don't think it's so strange! Ok musically they aren't that similar, but they both are coming from that kitsch angle a bit, they have an interest in retro pop (as in popular) culture in common (Cardies covering Sabbath, Beck showing American country line dancing in his video). So intellectually I think they go together nicely... That's all, //Chris --------------------------------- Date: Tue, 18 Feb 1997 12:56:30 -0500 (EST) From: Chris Forsberg Subject: Re: Cardigans w/ Beck... Tickets are not on sale and so far he said all that has happened is some promoters have said that they want to have the show there. I don't think the Cardigans should be publicizing dates if they aren't firm, or even close to firm yet... //Chris --------------------------------- Date: Tue, 18 Feb 1997 19:55:29 +0200 From: Michael Rehnstrom Subject: Re: Monkeypig I think I have to correct myself about Monkeypig. But I think that they have released another single on Pandemonium, at least they intended to release one during January. I do not know the title of that one. So there should be, at least, three Monkeypig releases available somewhere in this universe. /Micke -------------------------------- Date: Wed, 19 Feb 1997 02:29:44 +0100 (MET) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Re: Petrol at bla On Mon, 17 Feb 1997, micke.lonngren@mailbox.swipnet.se (micke lonngren) wrote about: Petrol at bla > PETROL is special guests at venue BLA in Eskilstuna this saturday, main act > is POLYTHENE. Hey, good news indeed - but where did you hear about their appearence at the Hultsfred festival? I thought the festival kept a tight lid on their list before the "big presentation", or have I missed something somewhere? //Erik (chief@lysator.liu.se) -------------------------------- Date: Wed, 19 Feb 1997 02:29:27 +0100 (MET) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Sin's Music on the Radio [24-Feb-97] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scandinavian Indie MUSIC ON THE RADIO Scandinavian Indie February 24 -> 27 by Erik Soderstrom (chief@lysator.liu.se) Day Date Artist Recorded --- ----- --------------------------------- -------------------------------- Mon 24/2 Tiger, S.P.O.C.K Malm|, KB *Live* Tue 25/2 V{rttin{ Stockholm Fasching 26-Jan-96 Wed 26/2 Goldmine (R) G|teborg, Nefertiti 20-Mar-96 Thu 27/2 Metallica (part 2) Stockholm, Globen 16-Nov-96 This list covers the Swedish National Channel P3's "Live" - at 21.03-22.00 or 18.03-19.00 where marked with a '*'. I'm also new to the list and live in Aalborg too, but I'm french and I am more into indiepop and indierock. I am on the tweenet mailing list, where we have a tape swap every month. I always include my favorite danish bands ( greene, Rhonda Harris, Psyched up Janis, ludox ) on it, they are maybe not pure indie, but they're great and being danish almost qualify them. I have heard some of the bands, you mentioned, I don't like Kashmir too much, but I saw Lovebites on TV, where they also did an interview , I think we are going to hear a lot from them. Henrik H. Olesen from Greene plays guitar and Niclas Tange ( early in the Poets, another great danish band) plays drums. Vildensky plays Tusindfryd, saturday, the 22th of february. Ibens are a good pop band, but they sing in danish, which is a little bit of a handicap. I would say, that Nikolaj Norlund " navnlos " where he sings ( in danish of course) Michael Strunge's poems, is some of the best danish music, I have heard, in 96. He is Rhonda Harris' singer and earlier with Trains, boats and planes. I can't make a tape with all of these bands, but I could start one and send it to you or somebody else who could continue. BTW, as Jesper surely knows, here in Aalborg, it's rather difficult to find swedish indie, apart from the Cardigans and Popsicle. Does anybody knows, a swedish mail order where I could find eggstone, red sleeping beauty, komeda, club 8 and that kind of stuff. Obviously, the band has to say that they love the work Ken did on their songs because of his "greatness", though I wonder what they really think... I hope they share my thoughts and produce their next album themselves. //Erik (chief@lysator.liu.se) ----------------------------------- End of SIN Digest #4.11 ***********************
