He has packed his bags and stepped out into the unknown reality, outside
the university. But don't worry, I have a strong feeling he will be back
with us when we least expect it ;-). Saw him at the Honey Is Cool concert
at Herrgarn, in Linkoping, last thursday (great concert, it was. Karin
Dreijer sometimes sounding like Dolores O'Riordan, sometimes like Stina
Nordenstam and sometimes like Bjork but mostly like a mix between all three
of them. Amazing!).

Just wanted to complete my reply to Chris Forsbergs request about The
Creeps. Their latest album, from 1996, is called "Mr Freedom now". A couple
of years ago, think it was 1993 or -94, they released the album
"Seriouslessness" which included the _big_ (in Sweden, at least) hit
"Change it" which was, IMO, so lousy that I had totally forgotten about the
existence of the entire album.

 INTRODUCTION
     A few days late or a couple of days early, depending on when you
     sent in your answers to the extremely hard question of what band
     Fidget toured with between April 14 - 18, here are the results!

 CORRECT ANSWER
     The correct answer is: Gene.

 RESPONSE
     Rating: extremely good. The number of people who participated in
     the contest was the highest ever in a Scandianvian Indie contest!

 THE PRIZES
     The 10 winners will receive a pretty heavy package in the mail
     within two weeks time. The package contains, as previously
     reported: 1 copy of Fidgets debut album, 1 copy of their first
     single (signed), 1 copy of the second single (signed) and a
     slick poster set with six different Fidget posters.

 THE WINNERS
     As it happened, Nina Natri (the band's illustrious founder and
     singer) turned up at Mega Records' offices the very same day
     A&R Peter Ejheden were to draw the winners. Thus she got the
     honours of course.

No idea on the big stage names yet. But I can tell you that Eggstone and
fab skankers Liberator will be on the same stage one of those warm August
evenings. To me, that makes it worth staying in town instead of hiding in
the countryside for a week.

More Liberator news:

The band is to appear on National TV at Centralen this Saturday (24/5), the
day after playing in Visby with Monster. Those who can should indulge in
both.

I dunno about the record sales, you are probably right there, but "Change
it" must have been one of the most played tunes on radio that year - it was
everywhere and at any time of day. Horrifying!

Anyways, there are other bands I rather discuss. One of them is Salt. I saw
the "new" album in the store yesterday. Has anyone listened to it yet?

So the summer is finally starting to kick in, the sun is up, the grass
is greener, the popkids prettier and there's action in the air.

this friday at the club Tre Backar (At Tegnergatan - Subway
Radmansgatan) there's shoegazing with the Alingsas groop Aquadays
(soon to be Demo of the issue in Sound Affects) and their compadres
The Wellmeant. Both are well worth looking out for - erspecially the
Wellmeant who's cover version of Abba's "Knowing You, Knowing Me" is
hauntingly beautiful. Got it!

and then a week from now - on friday the 30th it's time for the first
ever Stockholm International Pop Underground - fave livebands, the
twee-est DJ's around, more flexis than anywhere else in the stockholm
area, a free FANZINE to all that arrive, all-night-disco-ACTION and
fun-fun-fun.

This months bands feature the 7" debutants Cessna all the way from
Tampere in Finland - and their labelboss Chris Jigsaw will indeed be
in the building - and the everprolific The Grand International and
rounding off the evening is the first show in ages from the REAL and
IMPROVED Red Sleeing Beauty - rumours has it that they're going for
the orchestral manouvers this evening and there'll be seven of them on
stage - AT ONCE!

Get ready to SHAKE SOME ACTION!

other, and maybe better, than stockholm! uppsala, for instance.

tomorrow, may 24, kalmar nation is hosting its traditional popfestival,
this year featuring:

ABLE (yes, i'm into self-marketing. not.)

admission is 70 SEK (40 for members of kalmar), and you need your kårleg.

then, next saturday (i.e. may 31) will see the birth of an entirely new
club, HEMMA HOS CLUB PIMIENTO at fredmans on drottninggatan. behind the
club is our own pseudo-label pimiento recordings, and we intend to repeat
the event at least twice every semester. on the night of the grand opening
no less than seven great local bands will appear:

of course we'll have records spinning when no band is playing. we figure

Wendy,
I guess you didn't see my email a couple days ago.....I mentioned to
the list that I had just watched the episode, and that they lip-synched
"Lovefool" and "Been It". That show, vapid as it is, has some good taste
when it comes to their occasional musical guests. I remember when the
Flaming Lips were on there -- they have never been as big in the USA
as the Cardigans are now (and although they are getting big here, they
still ain't a household name or anything).

No,I didn't see the post (You got me--somedays I just stack 'em all in a
mailbox...I'll have to look it up).  I agree with the good pop music.  They
seem to pick well rounded, likeable groups with a modern sound.  Even though
I haven't met them, I feel I know them since I played at Malmofestivalen '95
opposite them(actually we played the hour before them, on the street area),
and I've seen Nina walking around in downtown Malmo a million times.
Dammit! Should've said hi. I'm really happy for them. (just name dropping)
How's the rest of the album?

i hate to be the messenger on this one, but tim taylor, frontman for the
band brainiac, was killed in a single car accident early friday morning.   

my condolences to brainiac fans.  i wasn't sure if the internet was the
proper medium to pass this info on, but have posted it nevertheless. i know
that the band wasn't big enough (yet) for the press to pick this up so i
figured this was the only way for fans to be informed.

let's hope there really is a place somewhere up there.

but you might not want to read it because it's so american (in the bad
meaning of the word)

has anybody yet bought the new Weepikes CDEP "Selling Fish"? i've only had
time to listen to it a couple of times, but alteast now i feel that it's
weak compared to the "Howkey?" 7" (but then, that 7" is one of the best 7"s
i've ever heard)

I would say that it is a great album. IMO the best they have done, possibly
with some competition from their first album "Emmerdale" (to get rid of
some confusion - The Cardigans have released three albums in Sweden but
only two, the first one a mix of the two earliest swedish albums, in most
other parts of the world). I have to admit, with the risk of upsetting
people, that I consider "Lovefool" to be the only bad (or less good) tune
on the album. The reason for this might be that it has been played on radio
and TV so much, but I remember that I was a bit suspicious the first time I
heard it. It is not very representative for the rest of the album either, I
think.

The attitude on this album is a bit tougher than before, the music more
based on guitar riffs. The band members' love for old hard rock can be
heard in tunes like "Your new cuckoo", "Been it" and, of course, "Iron man"
(I guess the fact that Ozzy Osbourne sent flowers to Ninas hotel room says
much about their hard rock covers). The tougher attitude can also be heard
in the language (I was surprised that they were allowed to sing "whore"
when they played "Been it" on David Letterman Show). But it is still, of
course, pop. "A great divide" must be one of the most beautiful pop tunes a
swedish band has recorded for a long time and, together with "Step on it",
it - alone - makes this record worth buying.

Gotta agree with you on this one, but mostly on the 'reason might be'
part. I really don't recall "Lovefool" being suspicious at first (although
of course opinions may vary), but now I too find it difficult to listen to
the track as to a "real" Cardigans track.

Nevertheless, I consider the album to be very good, perhaps because of its
delicate roughness, that for me adds a certain power (sorry for sounding a
little too rock and roll here).

Interesting observations.  Hmm...maybe I'll just have to go out and buy the
album! Did anyone see Cardigans on Late Show with David Letterman?  I know
Sweden gets the show...They were on a few months ago, and were pretty ok,
except maybe a little lacking in stage prescence, in my opinion.  They played
something other than Lovefool and I can't remember the name, only that it
didn't strike me as a great song, at least not the first time I heard it (but
of course I never 'write off' songs until I listen to them at least 3-4
times. You gotta give music a chance to get to ya) By the way, any indie
bands touring in the Atlanta area this summer?

A good week in stockholm, four gigs on five days.
This is what i got:

Thursday. Soundtrack of our lives  - Grona Lund
Great fun seeing so many people at Gronan, it was at the small stage,
but the place was packed all the way to the entrance.
Ebbot was wearing a green hooded monk robe, and acted like crazy, far
off this planet. They have gotten very tight and groovy after touring
for a long time. But i was a bit disappointed that the set list was
more or less the same as at Gino in october (?). But who cares as long
as the guitars are psychedelic and Ebbot walks around like a drunk
egyptian on stage. ;-) They rocked, one of the best and most
professional bands at the moment. Gig review in Expressen, Mans
Ivarsson gave them +++, but I think they deserved more.

Friday. Aquadays and The Wellmeant - Tre Backar
Stupid me got to late to this, and missed most of aquadays gig. When I
got in at 21.00, they played June (featured on Scan Indie tape), a
wonderful, ethereal flowing thing. Then there was Daydreamer, and that
was it. I had to kick myself hard for not getting there in time. 
Aquadays was pure synth at this gig, just Martin (?) on a Juno 60, Lisa
(?) on a Farfisa organ and lovely Sara on vocals. Martin said he
intentionally left his gutar at home, to make the sound tonight more
"synth". Wow, was it beautiful! Like Slowdive, Sundays, but also a lot
like Stereolab and early Kraftwerk.
But they have to work on their stage presence, Sara has to realise
she's a star, not just a shy girl. Too sad the audience counted only 27
people tonight. Tre Backar looked like an "ungdomsgard" in some obscure
"forort". A shame, but maybe due to poor marketing. You missed
something! 
Wellmeant gave more of the normal indie band feel, with some Dino JR
guys on guitar, bass, and drums. Then there was one girl on organ and
another on vocals. (Sorry, didn't catch their names.)
Hey, noone told me that the singer in Wellmeant was sooo gorgeous. She
really had star quality. But very small, looked like 16. Very bright,
seductive voice, somewhere between Alison (Cranes) and 60 girlie pop
(Go Go's). They made an Abba cover as encore, sedated, slow with
droning organ. Good stuff, but maybe a bit conventional, mainstream pop
indie. 

Saturday. Stefan Sundstrom - Bla Porten
Stefan made a rare appearance, I haven't seen him live since last
summer at Tanto. No band, just him with an amplified acoustic guitar.
The mood was great, it was a banquet for Ordfront, some writers and
poets, sixties people, old red wine revolutionaries.
So he played a few party hits like Det maste lona sig att leva,
Vitabergspredikan, Sabina 4 and "Fredman" (Stolta stad).
If anyone cares (i do!) he also played four new, never heard of, songs.
Titled Ronald MacDonald 2, Sabina 7, Onda Barn and Sophantering.
Really god to see him again, he said he will play Tanto 15/8 and
Nämforsen festival somewhen in august too, no other gigs booked so far.

Monday. Grand Tune Music - Prinsen
So this was the premiere everybody has been waiting for, GTM's first
gig after reforming from Salt. The band is Nina on song and guitar, Jim
on drums, and the new one: Daniel Latt (sp?) on hammond organ.
You instantly miss the bass, that was so characteristical for Salt's
sound. This is lighter, more harmonic, and Nina doesn't even scream
anymore.
Someone joked that they play country. Maybe not, but they even play
some major chords now. It was only 25-30 minutes, but I liked it. The
organ built the songs and took you high, monotonous, repetative tones
going on and on...
Nina was trembling with nervosity, but when she saw the smiling crowd,
she smiled back, and during the final song she started to cry.
Backstage the whole band were crying, enlighted that they accomplished
their first gig. 
They record an album during the summer, released hopefully in october.
The only gig booked for the summer is Emmaboda, so it was kind of a
historical gig.
I'm very happy that i could be a part of it.

Haven't seen it, but it ought to be good, judging by the amazing amount
of good bands on this year. I mean: Honey Is Cool, Grand Tone Music,
Aquadays, Fidget, Silverbullet, Bob Hund, Soundtrack OOL, Yvonne, what
else do you need to be convinced. (did i hear Monostar?! ;-)

I skip Hultsfred, Lollipop, Water Festival, Arvika - Emmaboda rules out
the rest.

This is probably a long-shot but is there  *anyone* on here who might
possess, or *know* of someone who might possess video or audio footage of
the Roskilde Festival from years gone by? I'm specifically interested in
footage of Kukl, a very experimental, gothic Icelandic band that contained
several members who went on to form the Sugarcubes (Bjork one of them).
The year would've been 1984 or 1985, I'm pretty sure. 

If anyone knows anythign about this, please let me know!

Dressed to thrill, our A6 fanzine (free for all who come) neatly
folded and stapled, heads-a-spinning (we've even brought our guitars
to work) AND Cessna are on their way over the Baltic Sea.
There's nothing to stop us now. So do come and join in.

In Stockholm - at Cafe Kulturstationen (Norra Bantorget to be
precise). Doors open at 8 PM.

Disco-inferno starts right then and there with Johnb spinning his
wildest. Then Suretoss is on - Chris and a sixstringed acoustic ready
for some rock action. Followed by Cessna. Followed by Red Sleeping
Beauty (let's see at about 11PM). And then it's crashpop with The
Grand International. And more infectious indie-shambling-cutie-twee-
anorak PURE HIT SINGLES.

The event will go on til everyone has left the building - 3 AM? 4 AM?
8 AM? There's no tomorrow in this town.

All are invited - looking forward to seeing at least some of you
there.

Sounds great! I want to announce a happening aswell.

Tomorrow night Uppsalas coolest liveacts getting ready to rumble at
Fredmans ,Drottninggatan (close to Stockholms Nation) Uppsala. The fee
is just 40kr and I promise a very friendly atmosphere with cool bands
and great fun.

The bands:

Able (Brian Wilson goes country)
Blake Carringtons (My band -loud and rockish)
Fanscene (Coolest modspop around)
Ronster (Do it the american way)
Bunboy (Lo-Fi and attitude)
Sparkler (haven't heard them , but surely good)

Well, I don't need to be convinced, since I already have it. Just wanted
to hear peoples opinions about it. I don't want to review it, since I'm
in a band myself, but the SOBSISTER song is damn fucking great! 10 times
better than anything else they have made ever before.

Ebbot on a stage always deserves more than that! But, as I understood it,
the gig was held outdoors and in broad daylight? Doesn't really sound like
a good environment for rock music, especially not for SOOL.

The girl on organ must be a new member or just an accompanying musician.
The girl on vocals should be Marika Bergstrom.

I guess the Abba cover was "Loving me, loving you" which they really do
great. I also have to agree about Marikas voice and I would also like to
add Susanna Hoffs (The Bangles) when describing it. When it comes to the
part about "conventional and mainstream indie pop": ehhh, well, no more
agreement from my side, I think ;-)

So, I finally get an opportunity to do some marketing for my old home town
Vastervik (Ostkustens Parla). The annual "Visfestival" is held July
8th-11th this year and Stefan Sundstrom will be there and so will, of
course, lots of other artists. Not so much rock/pop but still quite nice. I
also believe that the acoustic Tomas DiLeva gig will be great, it was great
last year (his only gig last summer, I think!). If you come for the music
or to enjoy a very beautiful environment, you are welcome. If you come,
like about 95 per cent of the visitors do, for the opportunity to drink
alcohol, smash things, throw up in the street, mug people and turn the
whole town into a pile of litter - if this is the case, I think I speak for
about 20 000 people if I say that you are not welcome (but we don't have
people like that on this list, do we? So I guess you are all welcome)!

Nice to have Nina and Jim back again, I must say. I have only heard one
song from the Salt minialbum "Delay me down and make me wah-wah". It was
called "Fragile" and it was better than many songs on "Auscultate". No risk
that one should not be able to recognize it as a Salt song. Anyone heard
the whole album?

1) if anybody hasn't lately been to the legendary Osku should go and see the
serious re-modeling that's happening. more records and easier to find.

2) does somebody own the new Keuhkot CDEP? i've heard it's more catchy than
the previous stuff, but i haven't had a chance to hear it, so can somebody
tell me if it's worth buying?... i mean, it's sort of pervert to talk about
Kake Puhuu and "catchy" in the same sentence, but who knows.

3) the legendary house-robbers, Oranssi, will be bringing the one and only
absolutely fabulous God Is My Co-Pilot to finland. at this moment i know
that they will play atleast Konepajarock and Tavastia, with über-cool warm-up...

4) there is no part four.

5) wich brings me to Duplo. they'll be releasing a 7" with covers designed
by none other than Vilunki (or is it Vilunki 7000 ;) DUPLO! screw that in
your brainwaves.

6) i end this message with a warning; post-sonic free-blues is coming in the
wicked form of Bitches Brew Experience.

7!!) oh yeah! Oranssi is going to St. Petersburg on 5-8.6 -97... bands are
