a Shrine [A West Side Fabrication] are heading into the studio again
in November to record their forthcoming album. The album will be
released in february 1998 and is said to be the best soulalbum ever
made in Sweden.

* Backfish + "Valkommen Till Festen" soundtrack (S)

Backfish [A West Side Fabrication] recently came out of the studio
where they have been recording a new single which will be released
in the beginning of next year. The title song is called "How To Be
A Friend". Anna Wallmark (bass) just found out she was accepted at
a hot film school (is it really called that?) in Stockholm, and
will start there in February next year. This will not affect the
band in any way, says Anna, because they're only going to write
new songs and nothing else until the summer goes into effect.
Backfish, who are on tour in Germany together with Carpe Wade at the
moment, recently played with the before mentioned band in Uppsala at
Grand (no alcohol served, no age limit), where the number of people in
the audience reached the number of fingers on three hands. The reason
for the lack of fans could only be contributed to the fact that the
organizers forgot to tell anyone about it, which meant that those who
did show up were friends to members in the two bands.
They will stop in Stockholm on their way back from the tour in Germany,
in order to attend the premiere screening party of the new Ella Lemhagen
movie "Valkommen Till Festen" (Welcome to the party), which takes place
on December 22nd (the movie opens in selected theaters on December 25th).
The movie is about a new years eve party that goes seriously wrong.
! The reason behind Backfish attending the festivities is that they have a
song on the soundtrack to the movie. This soundtrack is a definite "get"
- as it includes 18 tracks with the following bands: Backfish, Bad Cash
Quartet, The Bear Quartet, Brick, Broder Daniel, Candysuck, The Drowners,
Fidget, Freinds, Honey Is Cool, Loosegoats, Mazarine Street, Monster,
The Mopeds, S.T.A.B.B., Serial Cynic, Weeping Willows and last but not
least, Yvonne. The music has been selected by Jon Jeffersson Klingberg -
known from ZTV and Whale. The soundtrack is released on Startracks.

The Bear Quartet [A West Side Fabrication] hides in a studio in
Stockholm recording (at least) eight new songs. Additional musicians
they have brought in for these sessions include members from Him
Kerosene, Blissful, Brick, Fireside and Bjorn Olsson from The
Soundtrack of Our Lives. When these songs will be released is yet
to be decided. The band will also play in Lulea on December 23rd.

The Drowners' [A West Side Fabrication] new single, "What Comes
Naturally" will be released in the beginning of 1998. The title
track is taken from the album "World Record Player", but there's
also a previously unreleased track called "Never Enough". If you

January 4 -> 5 is when the 4th Face Front Festival in Pitea is
held. Five stages and over 60 artists and bands in all possible
genres one can imagine. Most from the northern parts of Sweden,
but there are also southern belles like Sparky from Halmstad.

As promised in the last edition of the Weekly Selected News,
the full information about the Eskilstuna Pop City 98 festivities
would be presented now. So here's the fat of the land (the most

playing evenings). The bands on the Demo Stage are playing
during daytime.
Tickets to the three day extravaganza are: 250 SEK
But all concerts at the Demo Stage are FREE, so if you
only want to check out the new bands, you don't need
a ticket.

P3 will broadcast live on the Internet as well - see the

Subject: Kapoor demo review
For those of you who still have not decided what to give away for
christmas: why not a demo tape with the band KAPOOR :) (if there are any
tapes left, that is)? As you might know, this band is also represented on
this list by vocalist Girilal Baars.
"The unsigned band of the year" is the third tape I have heard with this
band and it is another step forward in their (positive) development, IMO.
When I heard their first tapes the vocals made me think of bands such as
PEARL JAM and LIVE but those similarities are not as obvious here. Those of
you who have read the latest issue of Sound Affects have, perhaps, seen
their very peculiar review of this tape. In that review RADIOHEAD were
mentioned and I can, partly, agree on that. "Rumour in hell" and "For real"
sounds slightly like "OK computer" with a little bit of psychedelia added.
(According to Girilal the common denominator between KAPOOR and RADIOHEAD
is that both he and Thom Yorke have been inspired by Jeff Buckley in their
way of singing). In "Hurricane hangover" I also hear similarities to bands
like LED ZEPPELIN and other bands closely related to them.
A lot of name-dropping here. But KAPOOR is not a copy of any of these
bands, I only use it to give you some hints about how they sound. And I
like the way they sound and I would also say that they stand out - both
regarding sound, interesting texts and Girilals quite special voice - in
the Swedish music of today. I also like the great variety in sound on their
tapes, the four songs on this tape sound quite different from each other.
There is still one song I have not mentioned and that is my favourite, and
it is another proof of this bands unwillingness to get stuck in a certain
category of music - "Auden girl". Those of you who listen to Musikjournalen
Pop on radio may already have heard it when it was played in the demo
section of the programme. It is certainly a "hit" and more "pop" than
anything I have heard with KAPOOR before. I would even stretch so far as to
claim that the chorus is one of the most irrecistible Swedish pop choruses
of the year (but we are not talking "britpop" here. Perhaps that should be
mentioned to those who might have gotten that idea after having read SA. It
is more like the missing link between "grunge" music and power-pop. Or
something like that :) Listen for yourselves instead of reading my strange
descriptions :). The best tune on a really good demo tape!

Anyone know anything about El Simon and Dunaways?
El Simon's supposedly a surf band from Skane.
It costs 70 SEK and takes place at Fiskekyrkan in Lulea.
Breach and Him Kerosene plays at Fiskekyrkan too, on the 18th.

i do know its released and instrumental stuff. i saw the album at dolores
some weeks ago in gothenburg. and i think ive seen one review of it, and it
was supposed to be very good, but not anything near the music of soundtrack
of our lives. and as usually with me... ive completley forgotten the name
of the band/album.. :o/

The album is out. it's called "Bjorn Olsson".
I have not heard it myself, but it sounds interesting since
it's been compared to Bo Hanssons "Lord of the Rings".
A review in Nojesguiden said that it sounds like the Soundtrack songs
"Firmanent vacation" or "Grand Canaria". But it was Orjan Hulthen who
wrote that so I shouldn't believe that to much:)

Hmm, nah.. I think it was subtitled something like "Musik att sjunka in
till, eller kanske dromma sig bort..." Kind of flummig titel, i must
say...

I got the impression that it's totally instrumental, so if you can
imagine the songs above without Ebbots vocals maybe?! ;-)
BTW, Nojesguiden ran a big two page interview with BO earlier this
year, very early on (july/august?) might be worth checking out, it
explained a bit of why he did this solo thing, and his future in SOOL.

Scandinavian Indie review:
Sideshow Bob from Lund will probably never be able to get rid of the
comparison to Loosegoats for a number of reasons which I won't go into here.
More than to say that it is really not a bad thing, as Loosegoats are the
definite no.1 lo-fi kings of Sweden. So, Bored Beyond Belief's four tracks
are four lo-fi gazookas then? Yup. Gustaf Kjellvander (guitar, vocals) has
got that low, drawling voice which is required here. He extends the e's and
rolls on the r's. Just like he should. Low and dense, rasping and hard,
clean and pure. His guitar knows what to do and delivers the scratchy sound.
Goes from lonely, eerie and sad to screaming, thick and picks up a wall habit
along the way. You can hear Peter Eriksson (drums) and Stefan Isaksson (bass)
leaning back, go with the flow and enjoy their instruments to the max.
"Follow Me Down" is a lo-fi gem, and "Mainstream Whore" goes straight into
my top-10 greatest songs of 1997. Yes, it's that good. The heavy metal
singalong in "Heavy Metal Nerd" is, on the other hand, horrible, though I
suspect that was their point with it. "Stuck" is a beauty with a lonely
acoustic guitar, violin and Gustaf singing of hurt feelings. A superb debut
with "more" written all over it.

Subject: Fireside + HiC live review
Just a short one, since my ears are ringing and i still have a
hangover... Went to see Fireside and Honey Is Cool at Studion yesterday.
Honey is cool were far better here than on the Water Festival earlier
this year. They were much more comfortable playing in a small club,
although the audience weren't there to see _them_ (nobody were closer
tham 5 m from the stage, everybody completely still).
The new songs finally got to me. Haven't listened to the album more
than occasionally, still think the early songs are better, but Lion,
Nach Heart and a few other are perfectly performed here. I'm especially
impressed by the guitar player, the slide licks he made on one song
(title?) sounded like laid back country with cool arrangements.
One guy was sitting on the floor with synthesizers, he is joined by the
bass player, who programs the drum machine on one track, must be old
70's equipment, cause they're getting cheesy/funky disco beats from the
gear, totally original, in combination with the rest of the music.
Boney M doing the rhythm section for Sonic Youth, sort of.
Oh, i must mention the drummer! I can't compare him to anybody else in
that genre. From time to time, he stands up, keep hitting the cymbals,
jerky, spastic. The chap is looking like Jim Carrey or the singer of
b52's in his early years, what a sight!
Karin was charming in a shy way. Her voice is unique, singing as well
as talking inbetween the songs. The way she executes Another Round is
simply wonderful, makes me melt completely...
Over to Fireside. Not as good as i remember them, although it must be 2
years since i saw them last time (opening up at Salts last gig at Gino).
The music is very powerfull, like a dinosaur throwing itself at you
with full force. And since i was in the front row, clamped by the
bassplayers "co-hearing speaker" (don't know the proper english name
for this), you hear the music with your belly as much as your ears.
This way, i missed out on most of the vocals, or was teh mixing a bit
weedy on those parts?
Monotonous to the extreme, everything is grinding on and on. Good if
it's a good song, but a boring song becomes even more boring this way.
;-)
Kilotin is a favourite of mine, but apart from that none of the songs
really caught my attention. And the guys look so angry all the time...
OK so the lyrics are sad and emotional, but it must be hard when you're
out touring, having to look so bister for months on a row.
Nevertheless, I like their style, and when you're in a down mood, this
is a perfect drug to let your aggressions loose.
BTW, the bass player looked very much like Bryan Adams and was spitting
a lot. He even spat at the HiC playlist on the stage floor which i
intended to take :-/

So did I. When it comes to Honey is Cool I agree with
you - they were better than on the Water Festival. This
was the sixth time I saw them this year, and they're
definately better when they play at places like Studion.
Their liveversion of Drums and Boys (from Crazy Love) is
something special. On Crazy Love I didn't even notice it.
That's the song they have started out with everytime I've
seen them except at Emmaboda.
The drummer, (Hakan?) he's so funny. And he's Broder
Daniel's new bassplayer, right?

I was there _only_ because of HiC, and I was closer than 5
metres from the stage, I know that for sure, at least my
ears do... we (my ears and I) loved every single
minute of their gig.
They played one song I haven't heard before the other songs
were from Crazy Love and Focky focky no pay. It was as good
as the rest of course.
During Fireside's gig I was only thinking that if someone
says "hi, how are you doing" my reply would be "hell,
and you?".
It's not that I have anything against Fireside really.
(I was thinking about something else when they played)
I'm just not too intrested in their music, but I have to
admit that I bought the Kilotinsingle there at Studion -
something I regretted deeply when I was about to buy a
trainticket this morning and didn't have enough money.
Somehow I got home anyway.
And I look forward to see HiC again.
