I heard the band and their management had said that there was no way they would be able to play at Roskilde this year when asked a few weeks ago. One of the Roskilde sites on the web says "Metallica will absolutely NOT play there this year" as well. Payment for the > construction was mostly provided by the Preachers (a cover band formed by > the founding members of the Tambourine crew). OK, I got things mixed up. Went back to this mysterious Tambourine Studios CDrom I found in a flea market in the Bahamas, and checked the story again. Apparently it was after they had bought the studio that they were having trouble paying the rent, so they had to sell off some of their equipment. They made a conscience decision to sell off all the digital stuff while keeping the 70's analogue stuff. An economically motivated decision which ended up making for a small analogue revolution. In doing a bit more of my homework, looking at old Grimsby Fishmarkets, it seems that they bought the studio (or at least the equipment) from what had been Manfred Mann (studios?). Now, I'm sure I should know who Manfred Mann is/was, but I don't. Help? A bunch of people have expressed interest in getting tapes of my little thing, though I'm sure that would prove horribly embarassing to my good self. We shall see what happens. However, in any event, I will be compiling a CDR of stuff for my presentation, so that I don't have to go fumbling with a couple dozen discs or queueing tapes. I'll post a track listing when it's ready, and will figure out some arrangement by which people can get tape copies of that (and maybe my notes), though it should probably be something along the lines of: send in a blank tape and a return envelope and i'll send you back a copy. I.e., making it absolutely clear that this is not something that I am selling. (Noting also that I subscribe to the school of thought which says that mix tapes encourage people to buy records rather than discourage sales). I doubt that the comp will be that interesting to those who are already pretty well versed in the jazzier side of Scandie pop, but might provide a nice intro for others. cheers,mkorchia@club-internet.fr Alexander .Radio Khartoum. http://www.algonet.se/~elegans/radiok/ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Feb 1998 22:50:43 +0100 (MET) From: Martin Eksten Subject: Re: Gigs ar Midsommar / Juhannus ?! Manfred Mann = bespectacled jazz/blues keyboard guy who formed mid-60's British R&B/ beat combo, "Manfred Mann" (humble name) and had tons of hits like "Doo-Waa-Diddy", "5-4-3-2-1", "Pretty Flamingo". I don't know if you can get direct support from state like that here in Finland, but at least there are two organizations, ESEK and LUSEK, which support the release and promotion of Finnish music. As far as I know, both are funded by two other organizations, TEOSTO and GRAMEX, and probably they get some money from the government as well. TEOSTO is the composers' and lyricists' organization which takes care of copyright stuff and collects royalties from eg. radio play and live performances. So, in practise if you have released a record and it is played on the radio, you'll have to join TEOSTO if you want to get any money out of it (especially when you have written some of the music or the lyrics). You will also get some money if your songs are performed live, even when you do it yourself. As far as I can remember, a (small) part of the money collected by TEOSTO will go to ESEK and LUSEK. I'm not very familiar with GRAMEX, as I haven't yet bothered to join it (the application form was far too complicated and clearly not intended for indiepoppers :) ), but I seem to remember that a percentage of every blank tape (audio & video) sold in Finland will go to GRAMEX, and if you are a member you'll get your share of this...but I might be confusing this with some other organization...this side of the music biz is really hard to figure out (on purpose probably). >> ...if you ask >> for some kind of state grant here, they will only give >> money to CD issues. This is what I have heard about ESEK and LUSEK as well. They support only the release of full-length CD's and only if you have a distribution deal. They also support promotional tours sometimes. I've heard that you can get up to 50% of the expenses from this organizations, but don't know if there's any truth in that. One thing I know is that the amount of support can vary a lot. For example, Super got something like 3,000-5,000 FIM (=600-1,000 USD) for the production of their debut album (covering around 10 studio hours...) where as the middle-class chicago blues has-been Pepe Ahlqvist got 200,000 FIM (=40,000 USD)... Some of the things above are based only on hearsay, so if anyone has more straight facts, feel free to add (and correct me). Hmm, I not sure about that. I'm more inclined that the common factor is weedyness. But there is an analogy, cause they're financing swedish pop fanzines/magazines too, if they declare that they will write about swedish music. That's why you can see some magazines in the shelves with the subtitle "tidning for svensk rock" or whatever they choose to call themselves. A friend of mine wanted to start a fanzine and investigated in this, and if he printed 1000 copies or so, he would get most of his cost covered! But then he would be forced to have something "swedish" in the title, and a minimum of 50 percent of the content on swedish bands. I know that I've seen lots of pop records from Sweden which mention having received funds from the Swedish National Council for Cultural Affairs. Yeah, i remember Twice a Man and a bunch of bands from the 80's. They give grants for 10-15 bands a year. Eggstone's first album was the only one that I could locate in a hurry, but I seem to recall reading that Komeda got some funding for their first album (?) from that source as well.
