Subject: [NEWS] Penniless - ex-Penniless People of Bulgaria
PENNILESS
In the summer of 1997, the third Alisaari-brother joined the band.
After that, Finnish band Penniless People of Bulgaria changed their
name to just "Penniless". A new album, entitled "Joe", will be
released in April 1998. The single "Avalanche" (WeCD 154) will be
released on March 16th. A video for the single will also be made.

Subject: [NEWS] Trastock Festival 1998
TRASTOCK FESTIVAL 1998
One of the best (and free) festivals of all time, the Trastocksfestivalen
in northern Sweden (Skelleftea) never happened last year due to restrictions
from the Police and the local government - they claimed the festival could
not handle all the drunk people at the festival (for example). Now, this
year it looks as if the same thing is happening again - even though they
have tried to relocate! Please go to their website and make your voice
heard - you can do something about this! The site is available in both

Yeah, Thomas (I was close!). Uh, it was a very interesting article in that it
was drawing parallels between the film itself and the lyrics of this new
Ubu album. Both have to do with going to strange places, off the beaten
path, as it were. It was intellectual piece. Very suited to the Times, and
not at all the kind of piece you'd see in a music magazine.

Maybe it's because the finnish bands that big record companies are trying to
push into the big world sound exactly like their big world counterparts,
with nothing original... i mean why should an english guy or girl buy
finnish music when when it sounds exactly the same as the music made in his
home country?
when the music is the same it becomes a war of who's got the most money to
spend on marketing, and who's got the best connections...

T-Bones is an american garage band i believe, but Honey B & the T Bones is a
band that originally started by playing regular blues, but has turned into a
prettey wild outfit. they just released a new album "Psychophysical"
They're worth cheking out, but their guitairst also plays in The Hypnomen,
who i think are *atleast* as good.
These both bands are also pleasant surprises in that even though the players
are technically very good they still play good music with good songs, and
try to do something out of the ordinary.

Just wanted you all to know that BENT SPANNER, ARTY BANNER will be the
opening act for MOGWAI the 18th of March at KB in Malmo.
It's BSAB's first gig since september. We have been busy making a record
that never seems to come out. Well It's finished and all, but there are
a bunch of things for the record company to sort out before it can be
released. It sucks.
BSAB will also play at Panora in Malmo on the 4th of April.

them. And BLACK SABBATH. And Olle Ljungstrom. And... etc.

Very true. The only Finnish artist to have really succeeded in the UK is
Jimi Tenor, surely because he sounds like nothing at all that we're
familiar with. 22-Pistepirkko had some good publicity a couple of years
ago, but they seem never to have caught on.
Listening to Timo's 'Finnhits Vol 1' tape though (my source of all wisdom
about Finnish music!) there are a load of interesting sounds on there which
are as 'exotic' to British ears as Jimi Tenor is.

So, this is going to seem totally stupid and out of place on this list, but
hopefully y'all won't mind too much. Basically the story is that a
room-mate of my girlfriend's is moving out of her part of this very nice
New York City appartment and I figured perhaps someone on this list might
be either a) a scandinavian contemplating a move to the states & the "hip
east village" or b) an American looking for a place to live with nice indie
types in nyc.
Therefore, here's the scoop from Sujan, the
not-my-girlfriend-and-not-the-girl-who's-moving-out-room-mate:
Hi, my roommate beth needs to move out for a little while.
So if you are moving to NY soon or know someone moving here soon,
pass the word.
For a six month sublet: March through August (flexible)-
A loft bedroom in a three bedroom apartment on a nice block in the East
Village of New York City facing south which means you get lots of light.
Rent is $620 and that doesn't include utilities.
No cats (i am allergic) but well-trained/groomed non gargantuan dogs are
welcomed! Apartment has a spacious kitchen, hard-wood floors, full size
bath, exposed brick and my second roomate is willing to switch if you like
her room better ($635)
Female or male, smoker or non-smoker.
Student types and recent grads preferred as are people who don't go to
sleep at 9pm.

22-Pistepirkko is going to start rumbling away again. they're starting a
tour with no less than two consecutive nights at Tavastia, and i suppose
they're going to release something too.

Ouch! that thing. maybe i should do a new one. i've even got a double deck
tape recorder now, so maybe i won't have to bother my friends... nah, i'll

outside Nordstan ... but as this does not happen again until June, I
wonder if I can do anything for you guys up there, perhaps you are in

Mm, yes, that's what I meant. Presumably Warp were sent some of his stuff,
thought it would work in the UK, and snapped him up.
I don't think any Scandinavian label is going to have much luck pushing its
artists here: NONS and so on get occasional reviews but not really sales.
There are loads of UK labels looking for exciting new artists, but as Timo
(was it?) said in the first place, there's no point if you're just sounding
like a UK band -- everyone's got plenty of them! The 'Cardigans Factor' is
one way of breaking through -- a kind of pop that sounded (then!) genuinely
new, fresh and inventive to British ears. Or the Jimi Tenor approach, the
furrowed-brow technoheads who appreciate cool sounds no matter where they
come from, and your old Russian analogue synths.
But obviously no-one who sings in Finnish is ever going to make it in the
UK :-(

I guess the same thing happened when Blast First picked up Panasonic. But
I believe they are doing reasonably well in the UK... at least good enough
for Mika Vainio to move to London (although he's going to relocate to
Barcelona quite soon).

Now Panasonic doesn't sing, but at least they have Finnish track titles...
things like 'Uranokemia' 'Telako' 'Teurastamo' 'Moottori'... To me it
sounds so awfully exotic... it evokes images of grave-looking scientists
in white overalls, performing weird experiments in a top secret laboratory.
I'm pretty sure some people pick up Panasonic albums just because they - like
me - are intrigued by the titles.

Oh I wish... half a year in NYC would be just perfect. Love that city,
but it really is impossible, at least right now. :( Well, I can at least

I know I keep on saying this, but it still is the best source for
these things (humble me, I know...) - check out the Scandinavian
Indie website (Gig Guides - - which has changed name to Gig Related)
where you can at least find info about where to get tickets and
links to various related resources (ie. the Loppen venue for

Marten's got a point here. Why, for example, do the Swedish buy
pop music in English? It's not (or at least not just) because they
understand the words. There are masses of people here who even buy
records in Italian, and if more than 1% of the population know what
Eros Ramazzotti is going on about, I'd be amazed.
The thing is, singing in English is as cool as anything here. So is
Italian and Spanish and French, but not Finnish or Polish or Dutch.
If the British can be convinced it's cool to buy records in Finnish,
you be they'll do it. Hell, they go and see opera in Italian, don't
they? Watch subtitled French films? Buy Stereolab records?
The real trouble is convincing them that Finnish (or for that matter
Swedish) is cool, when none of the Finns think it is. :-(
Anyway, I got an email the other week from a bunch of New Zealanders
who'd seen bob hund on MTV and gone completely crazy about them...

I have a weak spot for old german Neue Deutsche Welle / synth-music (I
know I know, not very indie). So if Rainer could find the CD-reissues
of Rheingold, I would be prepared to go all the way to Gothenburg just
to get them... Yes, I'm serious.

And I had been standing there for about 4 seconds when you came, so I must

And more festival updates that you may or may not know: Bjork is NOT
playing Roskilde now, but instead is playing the Skanderborg festival
in Denmark (I've never even heard of that one!)

Yeah. i've got some hope that internet mailorder (and mailing-lists) will do
a lot of good to bands that don't have a lot of money behind them... atleast
this is my understanding after speaking with a few people.
Basically i feel that the weirder the music is, the better chances you have
if you're coming from a small country / label. anything slightly mainstream,
and you'll need an amazing amount of luck and possibly a little talent too,
since it's all such a big pond.
But when you're doing something weird, you just bomb Peel, a few dozen
'zines and a couple of opinion leaders on mailing-lists, and it just might
start growing from there.
