Yes, it really kicks Verve's gig in Hultsfred 1994 and Slowdive's 1993 Stockholm gig down a spot to number 2 on my list, and if you know how much I love those bands, you know what that means... Drone, drone, drone - guitars going on and on, floating, growing shrinking, thundering for around 10 minutes so beautiful we were just standing there with our jaws chewing on the floor. Simply fantastic! Unfortunately they had an interview already scheduled so I never got a chance, but I talked to the girl who went with them selling T's and almost all of the songs were from their latest 2CD/3LP "Trust Us" (which I noticed was available in the local indie record stores here earlier on thursday - they didn't have any records with them sadly - they would have sold the lot if they had) and she also said that the P3 Live recording made at Fritz Corner the night before will be broadcasted on April 23rd. Yummy! If you get a chance to see them live - do _not_ miss it! //Erik - blissful ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Mar 1998 21:01:03 +0100 From: Erik Soderstrom Subject: [LIST] Upcoming Promotion Visits [29-Mar-98] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scandinavian Indie UPCOMING PROMOTION VISITS Scandinavian Indie March 29th, 1998 by Erik Soderstrom (chief@lysator.liu.se) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Artist/Band Rec.Label When Where Gigs ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 Unlimited Byte/MNW ILR 24-29/4 Stockholm Alabama 3 Virgin 14/4 Lund Yes Carleen Anderson Virgin 14/4 Stockholm Anouk BMG 9/4 Stockholm BB King Universal May ? Simply > fantastic! Yes, it was a great gig. I guess calling it "psychedelic" would be an understatement ;). Looooong tunes with looooong instrumental parts. I think they managed to play 7 or 8 songs during the 70-80 minutes long gig. One of the tunes was well over 15 minutes long. Quite an experience and definitely recommended! And when we are talking about great gigs I might as well mention the TRES NOONERS gig from last week (I did not have time to write any comments on it then). Noisy and jangly pop in a soundscape somewhere between PAVEMENT and SONIC YOUTH. A great gig, but unfortunately a huge part of the audience didnt seem to think so (many of them left during a song called "Polanski". Guess they were scared ;). A pity really. OK, some of the songs might have sounded totally unlistenable to someone who thinks that music should be melodic, but many people left before giving the band a chance, IMO (some songs _were_ quite "catchy", if that was what they wanted). That NOONERS gig made me run to the store and buy their album "The dator years", released on L-Style. It does not really fit the description I wrote above, but it is great anyway. Not power pop, but very powerful, and noisy, pop (especially in "Tri-mag" when the vocalist _screams_ "I should have cut your heart out when I had the chance" in a way that would have made me quite worried if I had been the subject for his anger). /Micke, who thinks that there must be something wrong with his copy of the GRAND TONE MUSIC album - every album has at least _one_ bad tune, why not this one? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Mar 1998 13:47:48 +0200 (MET DST) From: Petter Tiilikainen Subject: some kind of review.. Hi, Just a few words about the Brick+BQ+Far Apart+Walter show. Far Apart and Walter are local Lulea bands, and were so-so. Walter's singer had a quite original and high-pitch style which I found pretty entertaining, and since they only played 4-5 songs, it didn't annoy me that much that they're music is in the fireside/quicksand vein. Far Apart played a few more songs, and got boring halfway through. It's just not any fun seeing how the local bands seem to jump on the latest bandwagon all the time. A few years ago it was NOFX/Bad Religion influenced skate punk that was the thing to play, and now it's quicksandish emocore that is what you play if you wear all the right clothes. Bear Quartet played about 10 songs or so, half of them were new and not released yet. Matti seemed to handle the old songs (old and old, they didn't play any that was older than Moby Dick) better than the new ones. And as usual, the last song they played was "If you have a heart". Brick bored me, a few songs were pretty good, but most of the time it was like a tired Jesus Lizard. Really nice venue btw, the Ebeneser Church should be used more often for shows if possible. I think the maximum number of people allowed in there is about 300 and even if it may not have been that much people I would say it was closer to 300 than to 0. The album has received quite decent reviews in Swedish papers the last couple of weeks. Pretty cool huh? Yeah, so here's what you need to know and what to do. Information ^^^^^^^^^^^ This is a creative contest for your soul. No, you really don't have to answer any questions or roam about on the net for the answer to "What did Scully have on the back of her coat in the episode where Joe 'the farmer' found an innocent looking kid in his field, but it turned out to be an (wait for it...) ALIEN FROM ANOTHER PLANET!!!!! AAAAAAAHHH!!" Nope. Nothing like that. You may need to check out some graphics and listen to some music on the web though - so here's the one link you need: * The Coo Homepage http://www.uta.fi/~jr53356/coo.html This is the band's own homepage, which means one of the members of the band has designed and put it up (ie. runs it). What you must do! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ What we want you to do is to __design a new and lasting Coo logo__! That's right! Coo needs a new and cool logo which they want to be able to use on their record covers, t-shirts, stickers, drumsticks and whatnot. And they want You to design it! So grab a pencil and paper, your canvas and brushes, favourite painting or graphics program, and start your braincells! When you're finished, send your masterpiece to us (preferably by e-mail, but if you need to send it in a different format - on a paper, on a diskette etc. let us know (send e-mail to: chief@lysator.liu.se) and we'll work it out somehow). Sending by e-mail: You should send your logo to: chief@lysator.liu.se, who will then pass all the logos on to the band, who in turn will decide who's going to be the winner, and who will be second and third. The format you send your logo in matters, but we hope we'll be able to handle most graphic formats - or we will get back to you. Please let us know if you allow us to display your logo on the results page on the Scandinavian Indie website after the contest is over as well. And please remember to include your postal (snail mail) address, or we won't know where to send your prizes! ------------------------------------------------- NOTE ANSWERS must be sent to: chief@lysator.liu.se NOTE ------------------------------------------------- What you can win! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ 1st Prize * The Honour of having designed the logo * The New Coo T-shirt with the logo * A copy of their CD-EP "Heavenly Blue" * Some extra bonus prizes (surprise) 2nd Prize * The New Coo T-shirt with the logo * A copy of their CD-EP "Heavenly Blue" * Some extra bonus prizes (surprise again) 3rd Prize * A copy of their CD-EP "Heavenly Blue" * Some extra bonus prizes (surprise once more!) Good Luck! Last date to send in your logo: April 23rd, 1998 ---------------- The winners will be presented on the contest pages (and contacted through e-mail) about 10 days later. Please note that none of the information you enter will be spread or disclosed to anyone anywhere ever. It will only be used for this contest in order to send the prizes to the winners. So when punks grow old and wise, they move into techno territory instead...? That's a good place to be these days. Mika Vainio of Panasonic has a side project called 0 (it should by that Danish letter, an "o" with a slash through it, but I'm not supposed to write it 'cuz the list server might choke on it). It's even more sparse and experimental than Panasonic, but still it's got some beats. The 'Metri' or 'Olento' CDs are good places to start. I guess you could basically check out any release on the Sakho label btw. The British duo Autechre are a favourite of many within this genre, although I'm not to keen on them myself. Try 'Chiastic Slide' or 'Tri Repitae'. Then there's the Japanese artist Ryoji Ikeda. He released a pretty good album last year called '+/-' which is similar to Panasonic only even more minimalistic. There's actually a very good Russian band called Species Of Fishes that are doing music in the Panasonic vein. They have released two CDs but I can't remember the names of them at the moment. Two of the more prominent artists doing modern electronic dance music are of course Aphex Twin and Scanner. The former has been skidding all over the musical map and done everything from drifting ambient soundscapes to harsh minimal beat-driven music, while the latter remains pretty faithful to his patented style -- incorporating parts of mobile phone calls that he has secretly eavesdropped into his experimental dance tunes. Scorn should be mentioned too, I guess, but then they're more into dub than techno... and personally I'm pretty bored by them these days. I guess you've seen that the fine people at Blast First recently re-issued Suicide's classic first album, and it comes with a bonus CD featuring two gigs from 1978. This is goundbreaking music, and still so amazingly fresh. Hope this helps... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Mar 1998 01:51:04 -0800 From: svenskax@sfsu.edu Subject: Re: techno. should also check out CYPOID.
