Since there were some bands, at the demo stage, that I saw but Erik Starck
didn't I thought I could fill in some of the blanks:

Well, actually I didn't see this band, mostly because of the ridiculous
band name, I guess. But I regret that. Some people, who did see them, used
expressions such as "the best and most intelligent Swedish-lyrics hip-hop
we've ever heard". Dunno if there is much competition in the
"Swedish-lyrics hip-hop" genre but it sure sounded interesting. (Speaking
of Swedish hip-hop: Damned! I missed BLACK MOSES too. Great single they
have out, IMO).

I missed the first ten minutes of this one, mainly because my friend needed
15 minutes to walk from the backstage area to the demo stage - something I
would have made in less than five minutes without him. Anyway, what I did
see and hear was great. Boogie-shuffle rock n' roll with some ska and,
perhaps, soul influences. Or perhaps just "pre-party music" to quote
guitarist Micke II himself (Hi Micke! ;) ). Nice visual appearance too.
Bianca does not only have a great voice but also a presence, on stage, that
few people on this (and higher!) levels have.

Loud, somewhat country-influenced, rock music. Kinda the same tradition as
LOOSEGOATS, I think. Not bad at all, even if they didn't make a very deep
impression on me. Btw, they also did a cool, unplugged, gig at the
Ettnollett garden party earlier on saturday. FINT TILLSAMMANS (melancholy
guitar-pop with Swedish lyrics about everyday life) did a more plugged, but
equally cool, gig in the same garden that day. (Btw, were any other list
subscribers at that party. I couldn't know, 'cause I don't recognize that
many of you).

I liked this! Slow, melancholy and gorgeous trip-hop. Rather minimalistic:
a few sound samples, a drum machine, a bass guitar, scratching and vocals
but no "big" sound walls. Perhaps the (female) vocalist's voice could have
been more suggestive, but that is the only complaint I have.
All in all, it was a quite nice festival. But I was very selective about
which bands to see. I don't think I watched more than 10-12 full concerts,
which is about one day's festival consumption for me in normal cases.
HEADRILLAZ really blew my head, or at least my ear-drums, off with their
heavy guitar-riff based adrenaline-techno. LARRY & THE LEFTHANDED were even
more eccentric than the last time I saw them, but they were just as good
this time (One reviewer claimed that their gig was "very Finnish" ;) ). And
GRAND TONE MUSICs beautiful hammond organ melancholy was the perfect way to
end the festival. But the best two gigs, IMO, happened during the first
day: 16 HORSEPOWER were just as amazing as I had expected and LUNA were
simply magnificient too.
Apart from BLACK MOSES I just regret missing SATORs backstage gig and BOB
HUND. And that I, as usual, was too tired to spend more time at the Gyro
stage.

Heh yeah! The rain poured down the day before I went to Hultsfred and it
poured down again the day after I left. I have been to seven Hultsfred
festivals but never seen a rain drop. Perhaps I could make a living on it -
festival organizers hire me to come visit their festivals and bring the
nice weather with me :).

I saw that concert too and i really loved it. I think it was the best
concert at the entire festival. I were totally knocked down by their
sensetive music. I don't have words for it. The singer had such a beatiful
voice. Well, i also tought of Radiohead when i heard them but i think EM is
much butter....
It disturbs me very much that i don't know anything about the band. If
someone has some info about them i would be very happy if you chared it with
me.

Bad luck to miss the 1994 festival! Verve's gig there that year is one of
the best gigs I've ever seen. And it was also the year I "discovered"
bob hund - a fantastic show, even though Thomas had to jump with his leg
in a package. ;)

I just thought I had to join Mikaels praising. Em was totally amazing. Like
Red House Painters mixed with some Radiohead. (And I too think Em was way
better than Radiohead have been ...ever.) Great songs, great vocals...Simply

I just have to check here - I listened to the Musikjournalen Pop show
this monday (three days ago) and I believe EM was in the studio where
Magdalena (the host) interviewed them, and didn't she/they say they
had been signed to a label? Umm, wait, or was it that The Motorhomes
(who are from Jonkoping, not Ornskoldsvik) had been added to Martin
Roos' "stable"? Oh I don't remember. Anyone else?

EM have signed a publishing deal with MCA and I for one have had the
opportunity to listen to their marvellous demo. IMO EM is the best
unsigned band we have right now and I think it will only take seconds
before they are upp there among the stars. The music, I think, will do
perfectly with both angst-ridden 16 yearolds and fans of pop music on
the serious side. Vote for EM.

Right! I remember you played it when we were visiting a month or two
ago. It was the first (and only) time I heard them, but I remember
I liked the vocals a lot. Don't they have some sound samples on the
net somewhere?

Darn! I guess I should have paid more attention to the concert. It feels as
if I have been very close to something really great, and missed it.
As has been mentioned earlier, I THINK that the shows will be published in
Realaudio on either www.rockparty.se or http://www.depot.musiclink.se/. I
don't think they publish all the shows, but perhaps a little bit of Em slips
through. I tried to search Altavista for their name, but its very Internet-
unfriendly (the name). All I know now is that there are a lot of songs with
the chord E-minor (hm, could that be where their name is taken from - perhaps
it should be pronounced "E Minor" in stead of "Emm"? Well, who knows...?)

Reading this makes me kind of sad, and reminds me about why I don't
care that much for Hultsfred anymore, and why I instinctively detested
Lollipop from the beginning. Why? Because as a regular festival goer
(i.e. one that actually pays for an expensive ticket, thereby helping
the organisers to keep afloat) you miss half of the fun these days.
So many events, parties, promotion gigs, etc are going on in the backstage
area, to which the majority of dedicated music fans don't have access.
At some point I read a column by Hakan Waxegard at the Lollipop website,
where he talked about his favourite moments at the first Lollipop festival.
Well, wouldn't you believe that his fondest memories were when he strolled
down the backstage area, going from party to party where people from media
and the music business, as well as various wannabees and hangarounds, are
scratching (stabbing?) eachother's backs. Honestly, this makes me sick.
I'm sure that if the committee behind Lollipop were not giving away so
many VIP or press passes, and actually made people pay for going, they
wouldn't have a problem with coughing up the money for Aerosmith. Quite
frankly, I can confess that I secretly smiled when Lollipop folded.
It's not that I'm feeling envy or anything, I know enough of people in
showbiz to be able to get backstage access if I wanted to... I just feel
anger because these festivals become more segregated for each year.
Oh well, sorry if my diatribe bored or offended anyone. Soon I'm off again
to the "drug ship" M/S Stubnitz, where there's a festival happening for
people who care about music and performances as a unique art form... and
consequently, media are either neglecting or scandalizing the events there.

Well, I can tell you all that missed the "backstage-fun" at Lollipop
last year one thing.
It really made me sick!
The only pupose these areas have for me is cleaner toilets.

Well, the garden party thing was actually open for anyone who knew about
it. Though not many people *did* know about it, because the organizers
didn't really go and shout it out. The reason why it wasn't advertised more
was that it was held in an area where people actually have their homes and
they would probably not enjoy having a huge crowd of people next to their
own gardens.
About the backstage area - this was the first time ever I had access to it
and, frankly, I wasn't impressed. Just a bunch of people being drunk (OK, a
lot of these drunk people were more famous than the drunk people in front
of the stages but still - watching drunk people lost its tiny amount of
charm many years ago). But I can understand that it must offend some people
that such a popular band like SATOR only plays for a very limited audience.
That is the only backstage gig I know about but I probably missed a few
"happenings" too. But I wouldn't say that such a big piece as *half* of the
fun goes on backstage. Just my opinion, of course.
About the "helping the organisers to keep afloat" comment: I dunno, would
festival organisers really give away tickets if they didn't think it would
help them keep afloat?

UH? "Drug Ship"? A festival on a SHIP (!) that's being scandalized by the
media?
What bands are playing? Crazy experimental sounds? (yes please!) I'm stuck
here in olde London towne so I can't go and investigate, but I'd love to
hear more about this and why it's so controversial in the eyes of its
opponents!

M/S Stubnitz is a ship that used to belong to the fishing fleet in the former
DDR. It was then rebuilt and turned into a unique venue, a platform for cross-
cultural events, which for several years has been a meeting point for avantgarde
artists within music, theatre, performance art, etc. Normally this boat is
located in Rostock, Germany, but was invited to Stockholm over the summer, as
part of the city's appointment to European Cultural Capitol for 1998. Upon
the arrival, the customs made a massive two-day search of the ship and its crew,
and managed to come up with a minor find: 5 grams of cannabis and some weapons
that are legal abroad but not in Sweden. For this shocking crime, the boat was
fined 900 SEK (comparable to a parking ticket) which was promptly payed. Still
this was enough for the evening tabloids to blow up the incident with headlines
as if WW3 had broken out. This was over two weeks ago, and ever since the
persecution from various authorities has continued. Certain politicians and
officers within the police have set their mind on closing down the boat, and the
activities going on there. The "rave commission", a special command within the
Stockholm police attempting to thwart the drug traffic at raves and techno clubs,
has made unfounded razzias on a couple of occasions, and enforced the cancellation
of a concert last weekend. Why they compare Stubnitz with a rave club - when it
is a concert venue - is beyond me. The ship has still not gotten a license to
sell alcohol, which means they're losing incredible amounts of money that they
had calculated with. The organisation arranging the music festival onboard, of
which I am part, also lose money because some people hesitate to come when they
can't drink beer. And not to mention all the door money we lost when we had to
cancel last weekend. Over the course of time there have been features in local
news reports on TV that generally were very negative, and in newspapers you have
seen letters from "concerned parents" demanding the closing of the ship.
Ironically, everyone coming to the concerts have been totally amazed by this
one-of-a-kind venue, and the biggest newspaper here (DN) has featured three
rave reviews of concerts on the boat. Still, in the eyes of Joe Bloggs on the
street, Stubnitz is a boat loaded with drugs and weapons where kids are
introduced to various illegal activities. Of course all this is disastrous for
the boat and its international reputation, and may as well be their financial
ruin if they aren't allowed to sell beer soon. I'm so proud of being Swedish...
Of course all this boils down to that some people sitting in important positions
fail to fathom what is going on there. What they can't grasp is very threatening,
thus they come down hard on it. Yes, what's happening on Stubnitz is unique for
Sweden, a similar manifestation for experimental forms of art never happened
before, and this uniqueness is acknowledged by everyone taking a serious
interest in cultural matters. Unfortunately, so far this acclaim hasn't helped
much to re-shape the way that certain authorities perceive the boat -- they seek
confrontation rather than a dialogue -- and I can tell you it is most frustrating.
The nazis during WW2 coined the term "entartete kunst" (degenerate art) for
art that didn't adhere to their aesthetical values... well, the crew on Stubnitz
as well as the Swedish festival organisers have found out the hard way that this
phenomenon is not just a thing of the past. I guess you can say that a lot of
the music are "crazy experimental sounds"... noise, ambience, post/space rock,
free jazz, dark folk, minimalistic techno, are some of the genres represented.

very thislisty to mention that tomorrow night Norway's answer to Merzbow,
Lasse Marhaug Band, is giving a concert. It is not unusal that their shows end
up with fist-fights between the members, and that they're rolling around naked

what a sad, sad, frustrating story.There are very few things that annoy me
about Sweden, but you managed to encapsulate all of them in your fine essay
of a reply; namely the seemingly ever-present, almost hysterically paranoid
need to keep Sweden "pure" and free of "degenerate" influences from "other
places". In many, many, ways Sweden seems so progressive and
forward-thinking in lots of important areas (especially compared to the UK)
but there's often this undertone of a sort of rampant misinformed
conservatism, fear of change, keeping up traditions at all costs...
Having said that though, the people I know in Sweden, all connected to music
in some way, are wonderfully open-minded and give me constant inspiration,
having none of the above negative qualities. So it's a shame to have this
mad schizophrenic split. Still, I'm sure it must spur you all on in some
ways, yes? No country's perfect and it's always good to have an opposition!
Oh well, I love the place anyway and I'd definitely come down to the boat
(alcohol or no alcohol) if I was able to, and check out whatever noise
terrorism is happening down there.
