First of all, though: If anyone went to Ettnollett's "breakfast happening" you noticed that it didn't quite look the way I wrote that it would. Actually, the whole thing was first cancelled, because most of the Ettnollett crew couldn't find a driver to their car and, therefore, never made it to the festival. Then Gustav Gelin threw himself onto a bus from Stockholm to Emmaboda and managed to arrange a breakfast with HELL ON WHEELS playing live. So it's thanks to him you got your breakfast ;). On to the bands: The Elephant 6 bands from the USA were, IMO, the big highlight on friday. Perhaps not always great but definitely always interesting. MUSIC TAPES played mostly acoustic, somewhat folky, twisted pop tunes about tornadoes that wants to retire from being tornadoes. Their concert was delayed because the TV that was supposed to sing the first song didn't work at first!! NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL's music varied widely in it's sound. Sometimes folky in the same vein as early, acoustic Beck stuff. Sometimes rocking hard (too hard for the PA system at times). Sometimes reminding of a marching orchestra that has had a couple of drinks too many. Hilarious to see the pure astonishment in the audience when, in the second tune of their set, about ten people showed up on stage with clarinets, melodicas, accordions, trumpets, horns, banjos and God knows what instruments ;). THE OLIVIA TREMOR CONTROL reminded mostly of some psychedelic pop bands from the 60's. Catchy pop tunes that sometimes made long excursions into landscapes of weird sounds. Definitely an experience to see all three of them. Their set ended in chaos with all the people from the three bands (actually some people seemed to be in all three bands. Many of them were in two bands) on stage. SPEAKER BITE ME from Denmark played rough guitar pop with some SONIC YOUTH influences here and there. I like their softer moments, because their female vocalist has a great voice which is at it's best in those tunes. Perhaps not very exciting music, but not a bad concert at all. NEIL ARMSTRONG: Bright and catchy pop tunes that reminded me slightly of HOUSEMARTINS. And anything that reminds me of "Me and the farmer" and other classics will always make me smile. Btw, it's nice to see a former Housemartin climbing the upper part of the charts again, isn't it? (Anyone who knows who I'm talking about ;) ? ) SMARTALEC sounded good, just like in Hultsfred. I noticed that they were somewhat disturbed by the fact that the audience were sitting on the ground and they were not the only band who was bothered by that. But I understand that it is quite common in Emmaboda. I heard some tunes with SPEED OF SOUND ENTERPRISE but they reminded me mostly of OASIS, so I left rather soon. The Kjellvander brothers had a quite interesting duel, with LOOSEGOATS performing immediately after SIDESHOW BOB. Both bands play rock music with heavy country influences and both were very good this evening, IMO. Nice to see that Christian Kjellvander is improving when it comes to contact with the audience too. Btw, SIDESHOW BOB dedicated "Mainstream whore" to all of you who weren't at the festival ;). SILVERBULLIT were a lot calmer than I had expected. I have heard many rumours about this band's live performances - how the singer has been suspected to be high on drugs just because of his behaviour on stage, about smashed equipment etc.. But none of that tonight. The music was calmer than expected too - rock music with a lot of THE DOORS influences. Quite good, though. WHALE is a band that I would really love to hate, just because of the disgusting media hype around them lately. But I must admit that they put on a quite entertaining show late that night. Guest appearances by Cream from BUS 75 and some guy that style-rapped during the last song. I don't think I will buy their new record, though. Actually, all the airplay they get on radio and TV has already made me feel tired of it. EASY was the last band I saw on friday. I liked the first "version" of EASY but I must say that I think their music is becoming quite dated nowadays. They still have a sound that reminds of THE STONE ROSES, THE CHARLATANS and other British bands from that period. And vocalist Johan Holmlund must have watched a lot of video tapes with Tim Burgess' moves. There was one song (don't know the title) that was really good - it reminded me more of techno/dance, so I guess it might be a song that is still around since Holmlund's collaborations with Quant. But the rest didn't catch my interest very much. This is becoming quite long, so I think I will put the comments on the saturday programme in another message. Just to make it more reader-friendly. PLUXUS were a lot more interesting live than on the "Music inspired by the architecture of Kennedy international airport" cassette, IMO. I'm lousy at categorizing this kind of music, but I can hear that it is related to the bands that are, for some reason, called "post-rock" bands. PLUXUS only used electronic devices, though. If you really concentrate, while listening to them, you will hear that it is really quite melodic, even if that is not apparent at first. Bonus points to the band member who actually managed to dance to their music ;). After that followed a bunch of the "standard indiepop" bands with vocals, two guitars, bass and drums. FIRST FLOOR POWER, POPSHOP, THE PANG and ORACLE are all bands that I would probably have loved 6 or 7 years ago but today they just make me yawn and look for somewhere to sit down. The same goes for the rockier SLUDGE NATION. EM is a band that many seem to like. I must say that I have not quite understood why, at least not yet. It's, at times, too pompous and too much "teenage angst" for my taste. About their sound: correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't "Em" a song by THE CURE? If it is, it's certainly not a coincidence. TRIPOD turned out to be just Fredrik Norberg of POPSICLE, a guitar and a drum machine. I had high expectations since some of his tunes are my POPSICLE favourites. But I was kind of disappointed. It was slow and melancholy but it didn't quite touch me. KOMEDA, GRAND TONE MUSIC and FIRESIDE did what I had expected of them. Which means competent performances. Not anything really special but quite good anyways. I liked KOMEDA's stage costumes - everyone wearing all white, except for Marcus who wore all red (even his glasses were red). GTM were better at Hultsfred, but I guess that is mostly because their melancholy music is more enjoyable in late nights than on afternoons. Their new tunes sounded promising. FIRESIDE started with some kind of lounge/jazz version of "Left rustle" but then they went on to their usual hard rocking emocore. Saturday's highlight was somewhat surprising, though. I know that MAZARINE STREET is a swell live act but this good - Jesus!! Their soul-and-blues drenched rock n' roll was badly needed in the cold, pouring rain. I didn't see many people, in the audience, standing still. I can understand why Malte and the others seem to be loved by so many (both organizers and audience) in Emmaboda. Their albums have left me feeling quite indifferent but live it's a totally different thing. One of the best gigs I've been to this year. BAD CASH QUARTET and CEASARS PALACE also rocked hard. BCQ is getting tighter for every time I see them. I won't compare their sound to anyone, since that might, obviously, be seen as an insult by some people. CP and their psych-pop/rock n' roll were better than on their panicking performance in Hultsfred but I think that the cold and lengthy rain had made the audience cool down a lot at this time of the day. Only the hardcore fans in the front rows seemed really interested. THE SOUNDTRACK OF OUR LIVES seemed quite uninspired to me. Perhaps it is just because I've heard about how Ebbot used to behave on stage back in the good ol' days. But I have seen them better than this. A lot of people, including me, were annoyed by the fact that their soundcheck took so long and we had to stand in the rain and wait and then, when the concert finally started, Ebbot's mic didn't work!! The concert ended with "Firmament vacation" and "Instant repeater '99", so I guess most left the concert with a smile on their face, though. Well, that's basically all the bands I saw. So I guess what remains is just to send a big THANKS! to Vinterbadarna in Emmaboda for organizing this very pleasant festival. Just goes to show a tubby plain-looking bald bloke can have Number 1s! "Rockafeller skank" is one of very few "popular" tunes that make me smile (even if I think he has done better tunes under that moniker before). Not to mention the hilarious video ;) ! I'd love to see THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH in that situation too, but they only seem to be "big" in the UK, unfortunately. I think I'm drifting off-topic now, so I shall stop before it goes too far. Perhaps I should mention that I, for one, would love to hear other people's opinions about both the Emmaboda festival and other recent festivals. For those of you who liked them at Emmaboda I would like to inform you that a 5-track EP was released on Slowball recordings earlier this year.
