Well, I was surprised to see it listed in the CDnow catalogue,
too so I bought it and a week later it was delivered to my house and it's
just the new album, which I already had. I think what must have happened
was that the stupid high-schoolers who work at the big factory were
probably scanning new shit into the databanks and part of their demanding
and challenging job description has them type in the "title" of the CD
and since the new one is eponymously titled, some dork called it "The
Charlatans (First Shag...) because minions could care less about the
truth of anything in today's society, shit, he was probably listening to
silverchair on his new, big bass, big padded headphones and thinking he
was down with the dope shit...
I've had this problem before with CDnow: waiting ages for a live
in Toyko Stone Roses only to be told THREE MONTHS LATER that it had been
out of print for a year or so. There's also a listing for an item called
"Charlatans + 2" which I bet is the "Can't get out of bed" b/w "Out" and
"Withdrawn". I tried to email the manager@cdnow.com and ask him but he
said that their goods come from four different warehouses and they're
constantly trying to update and can't access "esoteric" info like that.
Sounds like walking into any Tower records...
Going to see Blur tonight here in Seattle at Club MOE. Unfortunately the
Rentals are opening. Why do they do this to us?...

What is going on around here? I come back from break and everyone
is jumping down everyone else's throat. I experienced this on another
list and it just got worse and worse. The fact of the matter is everyone
here likes the Charlatans and while some of us may be more diehard
brit fans than others we'll just have to deal with those that aren't. In
any case
if someone has a problem with someone else on the list can you take care of it
through personal email or just try to be civil about it?

Sorry about that, I thought that I had replied personally and not to the
entire list. Bad form on my part, I know everyone else had no need to see
that and I apologize. This whole thing started out as a simple question
about a CD on the WWW at CDNow (http://cdnow.com). I just wanted to know if
anyone had ever heard of the CD "First Shag", which I assume is by the
Charlatans UK because it is on Beggar's Banquet. I've never seen or heard
about it on any of the Charlie's discographies that I've seen. Anyways,
things got a bit out of control and I'm sorry, hopefully the whole mailing
list will forget about this and get back to the Charlies!

you know those big 12" black shiny things record shops are named after
well people used to scratch written messages on the lead out track on the
vinyl next to the label in the middle. So if you look on the unused bit
after the last song on each side there being four you will read the code
number of the record thus telling you whether the record is an original
pressing or a rerelease as with the stone roses first four singles. now
appearing in shops being sold as originals. Anyway the charlatans tha
charlatans album say "first shag in ages" does this make any sense to
anyone or what?

Just about. I take it that you mean that the first vinyl pressings of "The
Charlatans" have 'first shag in ages' written between the leadout groove.

Anyone ever notice how the B-side "Your Skies Are Mine" from the
"Just When You're..." single is a stab in jest at the Stone Rose's "Your
Star will Shine"? Very similar in structure. And then there's "Frinck",
which reminds me of what the Beastie Boys could do if they had a B-3 or a
Wurlitzer.
ps. Why didn't they just call it "First Fuck"? Duh..............

Straight from the horse's mouth. Actually, it caused a rather funny
situation. When they appeared on MuchMusic in October, Tim was
asked if there was a certain video that he wanted to see (before
the show)...he immediatly answered "anything by Black Sabbath".
Because they were appearing on "The Wedge", which is MuchMusic's
daily "alternative" (whatever the hell that is) show, they wouldn't play
it for the poor guy. :-(
I've also noticed it mentioned in the odd interview.

1) When you just say "no" with nothing quoted, nobody has any idea
what you're talking about.
2) We really don't care. If you're going to send a message to 100

Yes, well, I read in the interview that was featured in Addicted to Noise
(I think it was around October) that it's the Stone Roses. Tim said it.
But heck, the next month it could have been Black Sabbath, no problem!
What, is liking the Stone Roses as your favorite band bad? I
particularly thought it took guts to say that, because hardly any band
these days would have the honesty to admit that one of their
contemporaries (oh my gosh!) was their favorite! There's way too much
competition and mud-slinging, especially with Oasis and Blur and all
that. No good.

Check out the NME and MM reviews of the Roses performance at the Fiele Fest
in August, and the reviews of the Roses' Sheffield and Wembley gigs.
Therein, one or more of the reviews or accompanying articles (in between the
times where the reviewers are conveying how hip _they_ are), reference is
made to the appearance of Tim and other Charlies backstage or in a bar with
the Roses. Long and short of it - Charlies and Roses have long been mutual
admirers, with the Charlies more overt about it. So, for Tim to say that
the Roses were/are his tops is no stretch, but likely the case. However,
recent articles (last 6 months) have shown Tim taking the keen interest in
Sly and other artists of a more, traditional and classic flavor.

No...the Stone Roses released one of the greatest albums ever; Tim

I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned Ride in this discussion...Tim &
Rob have always been Ride fans and the two groups have toured
Europe together. They are good friends with Andy Bell, as well.

hasn't Ride broken up? Supposedly mark gardener is going to release solo
material. does anyone know the plans of the rest of the members of the band?

The rest of the band is going to reform under a new name.
The final Ride album, "Tarantula" will be released next month.

Ride has called it quits, in Gardner's words, because he wanted to go
forward, i.e., progress their sound, and Mr. Bell wanted to harken back
to that late 60's early 70's sound and they just couldn't mesh.
The new single off the album will be released by Creation on the 12th of
this month with the "Tarantula" LP being released sometime mid march.
Supposedly, Ride were picked up by Elektra stateside but since they are
no longer an outfit and thus cannot tour, Elektra will probably not
release the LP stateside (so I'm free) so we'll have to pay import price
for it. Mark Gardner's new band is called "Exile" and will be, in his
own words, "kind of a Chemmical Brother's thang with lots of driving
guitars (a far cry from that decades ago sound that Bell wants to do.)

Uhhh, are you talking about all bands or just the very small
sub-sub-group of rock 'n roll that the Charlatans are part of? I agree
that they are a great band, but there's sooooo much music happening
outside England and even rock 'n roll!
If we're talking about related sorts of bands, I'd say that the Stone
Roses are getting their act together and seem committed to being a
regular band again, i.e. one that releases records and tours and such!!

I'd have to agree here. Maybe the Charlatans have not achieved the
typical success that bands like Oasis are getting now (which kind of makes
me sick) but I think the fact that they havent achieved high profile success
and they are still around and not slagging each other and other bands is
the mark of a truly great band. (excuse the run on sentence)

I think it's very interesting that the charlatans have received so much
critical acclaim in America, and relatively little commercial success;
Whereas in Britain, it seems that their albums get mixed reviews but
generally do better commercially.
I think even 10th and 11th got good reviews in America (personally it's
my favorite)--
Anyway, it seems like the charlatans are (in America) one of those cases
where the critics are onto something by recognizing the charlatans as a
developing, improving, up and coming band, and the public has nowhere
near caught on.
By the way, I don't know whether anyone else has posted any of this, but
at the risk of redundancy, the charlatans have done pretty well in some
British magazines' BEST OF 1995 lists:
Q magazine: (feb 1996):
one of the best 50 albums of 1995
"...within this impeccably presented collection lurked songs of sheer
quality...and a distinct air of freshly discovered confidence."
Another magazine, (select perhaps?) had 'just when you're thinkin'...'
listed as one of the best singles of the year.

Of course I would but I was specifically talking about US success. But even
in the UK they don't get the coverage that blur and oasis do. i personally
dont think that measures a band's success...i'm just stating obvious facts.
The charlatans are phenomenal no matter what standards you judge them by.
I wasn't trying to downplay them at all...dont be so quick to jump all over me.

does anyone have any good boots from the last tour? in trade i have hot
licks, glastonbury 95 and a cleveland show from 5/94 as far as boots go
and i have just about every single including indian rope, tremelo song,
over rising, cant get out of bed, then, the only one i know, and
everything off of the new album. i also have a lot of boots by blur,
stone roses, oasis, and teenage fanclub. i also have a lot of other
things but i didnt think they would be pertinent to this list (sonic
youth, dinosaur jr) so mail me and ill hopefully send you a current list.

There has been some quit times now, but that's because it's become quiet
around The Charlatans for a while. If you're wondering what the band are up to
now, I just read about it in the latest issue of 109. It will also be in my
BRW homepage, which is being renewed at the moment! The Charlatans are writing
and rehearsing in Stone Staffordshire and are planning to start recording
their 5th album whithin the next few months. No live dates have been
confirmed, but there has been talk of some dates.

A friend of mine was involved in a bomb alert at Archway tube station on
Wednesday, as the platform was evacuated he bumped into Mr Burgess and
they had a quick chat. Right now the band are just demoing stuff and
writing, they might start recording after Easter.
I got the landlord at my local pub to put on 'The Charlatans' on Friday.
I swear it's never sounded cooler. An album to live your life ( and drink
) to for sure. I was psyched up for the rest of the night after hearing that.

Well, if the Charlatans come back to North America, I'm definitely
going to see them again. The last time they played here in Montreal (last
October), they played a relatively short show and followed with only one
encore. A couple of my friends managed to track down Tim Burgess for a few
seconds, and he said he was sorry the show was so short, but the band had
to be in Buffalo early the next day.
So... if the Charlatans DO come back to North America anytime soon,
I'll be the last to complain! :-)
