It's configuration is as follows:

I have several computers of this type.
The above picture shows the machine with the cover removed. In the bottom of the picture the MS44-AA memory modules can be seen. These modules are added pairwise for increments of 8 MB. As can be seen this machine has all slots filled with provides for the maximum of only 32 MB. This is actually the maximum ammount of memory in all VAXstation 3100 series computers. It is only the M76 model, however, which contains SIMMs. The card fitted upside down above the memory is the graphics card.
By removing the graphics card the mainboard with the CPU is revealed.
The above picture shows the graphics board. The VAXstation 3100 series machines conatins monochrome graphics onboard. For color graphics there were two optins, either the GPX or the SPX option. This picture shows the SPX option. Both alternatives gives 256 colour graphics, but the SPX cards is faster and can be set to operate at 1280x1024 or 1024x864, while the GPX board only can handle the lower resolution. The resolution on the SPX board is selected by a dipswitch located on the backside of the card.
The above picture shows the computer with the drives mounted on a metallic plate that all of the VAXstation 3100 modles contains to hold the drives.
