The Work

This is a Sonata à 5 in E flat by Johann Wilhelm Furchheim for 2 violins, 2 violas, bassoon and harpsichord. The only surviving copy is now preserved at Uppsala University Library, who gratiously provided the copy I have used for this edition. The manuscript number is IMHS 3:17.

This Edition

I have always tried to be as close to the original as possible. Editorial changes have been put above the staffs, or within parenthesis. Slashed figures in the continuo have been replaced with their flat/natural or sharp equivalents. All accidentals have been converted to modern standard. Soprano clef in the first viola part is printed as treble clef. A separate version in alto clef is also available.
