This is a collection of 25 canzonas, 3 sonatas and 8 small pieces in various keys by Tarquinio Merula. The canzonas are divided into 7 for 2 violins and continuo, 10 for violin, violone and continuo and 8 canzonas for 2 violins, violone and continuo. The collection, Merula's opus 17, "Il Quarto Libro delle Canzoni" was printed in Venice in 1651.
The source used for this transcription is a copy of the original print, now kept at the Biblioteka Uniwersytecka Wroclaw, Poland, which I thank for their kind cooperation and permission. I have always tried to be as close to the original as possible. Editorial changes have been put above the staffs, or within parenthesis. Slashed figures in the continuo have been replaced with their flat/natural or sharp equivalents. All accidentals and clefs have been converted to modern standard. All beaming is added by me.
