The Work
This is Giovanni Battista Vitali's Opus 9, a collection of trio
sonatas in the Sonata da Chiesa form for 2 violins and continuo. The
New Groves Dictionary of Music and Musicians lists Vitali's op. 9 as
printed in Venice in 1684, while it on my copy says
Amsterdam. Information on the subject is welcome.
This Edition
I have always tried to be as close to the original as
possible. Editorial changes have been put above the staffs, or within
parenthesis. Slashed figures in the continuo have been replaced with
their flat/natural or sharp equivalents. All accidentals have been converted to modern
standard.
