Przemyslaw Frasunek published an exploit that demonstrates a buffer overflow vulnerability in that package. This vulnerability can be exploited remotely and is aggravated by the fact that the xntpd daemon runs as root. SOLUTION All users of the xntp3 package should upgrade immediately. The update for Conectiva Linux 6.0 incorporates a patch from Chris Wing for CAEN-Linux that allows the xntpd daemon to run as a regular user and still be able to set the system clock. Conectiva Linux 6.0 users using apt-get to update their systems should execute the following command: apt-get install xntp3 instead of the usual "apt-get upgrade". This is necessary because this update, besides fixing the security problem, requires a new package, libcap. This library (which in turn uses capabilities) is used by xntpd so that it can set the system clock without being root.
