PROBLEM DESCRIPTION The bug exists in main.c where it passes input from an ident string to the printf()-like format specifier in syslog(). It is possible to overwrite things in the daemon's memory space and thus obtain root. IMPACT This bug could enable an attacker to obtain root access on a machine connected to a network. SOLUTION Upgrade to a fixed version of cfingerd. You may use Progeny's cfingerd package version 1.4.1-1.1 or greater. WORKAROUND cfingerd is often not an essential tool for a system. If desired, one may remove it from a Progeny Debian system instead of upgrading. This command may be used to remove cfingerd: dpkg --remove cfingerd UPDATING VIA APT-GET 1. Ensure that your /etc/apt/sources.list file has a URI for Progeny's security update repository: deb http://archive.progeny.com/progeny updates/newton/ 2. Update your cache of available packages for apt(8). Example: # apt-get update 3. Using apt(8), install the new ssh package. apt(8) will download the update, verify it's integrity with md5, and then install the package on your system with dpkg(8). Example: # apt-get install cfingerd UPDATING VIA DPKG 1. Using your preferred FTP/HTTP client to retrieve the following updated files from Progeny's update archive at: http://archive.progeny.com/pub/progeny/updates/newton/ Filename MD5 Checksum ------------------------------------ -------------------------------- cfingerd_1.4.1-1.1_i386.deb 91115911a62b234a355c3c48053af98c Example: # wget http://archive.progeny.com/progeny/updates/newton/cfingerd_1.4.1-1.1_i386.deb 2. Use the md5sum command on the retrieved file to verify that it matches the md5sum provided in this advisory: Example: # md5sum cfingerd_1.4.1-1.1_i386.deb 3. Then install the replacement package(s) using the dpkg command. Example: # dpkg --install cfingerd_1.4.1-1.1_i386.deb MORE INFORMATION This bug was originally documented in a post to the BUGTRAQ mailing list, available at http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/176087.
