Red Hat, Inc. Red Hat Security Advisory

Synopsis: Updated Kerberos 5 packages now available
Advisory ID: RHSA-2001:100-02
Issue date: 2001-08-02
Updated on: 2001-08-09
Product: Red Hat Linux
Keywords: kerberos 5 telnet
Cross references:
Obsoletes: RHSA-2001:060
---------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Topic:

Updated Kerberos 5 packages are now available for Red Hat Linux 6.2,
7, and 7.1. These updates close vulnerabilities due to potential
buffer overflows in the Kerberos-aware telnet server included in the
krb5-workstation package.

2. Relevant releases/architectures:

Red Hat Linux 6.2 - alpha, i386, sparc

Red Hat Linux 7.0 - alpha, i386

Red Hat Linux 7.1 - alpha, i386, ia64

3. Problem description:

By exploiting buffer overflows in the telnet server included in the
krb5-workstation package, a remote attacker can obtain superuser
privileges on a vulnerable host.

4. Solution:

Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.

To update all RPMs for your particular architecture, run:

rpm -Fvh [filenames]

where [filenames] is a list of the RPMs you wish to upgrade. Only
those RPMs which are currently installed will be updated. Those RPMs
which are not installed but included in the list will not be updated.
Note that you can also use wildcards (*.rpm) if your current
directory *only* contains the desired RPMs.

Please note that this update is also available via Red Hat Network.
Many people find this an easier way to apply updates. To use Red Hat
Network, launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command:

up2date

This will start an interactive process that will result in the
appropriate RPMs being upgraded on your system.

5. Bug IDs fixed (http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla for more info):

30697 - The ftp server doesn't handle large files
41911 - krb5-server-1.2.2-4 possible bad init script (missing reload)
42551 - Addition of "ANY" keytab type.
45965 - ksu prints syslog messages to stderr
