A Sketchbook from Ruhleben
My grandfather, James McCarthy (1885-1954), was an engineer, a shipyard manager, and later in his life a farmer.
He was British, but lived in Germany, where (I believe) he worked at the shipyard in Hamburg.
According to his passport he was actually born in Hamburg.
Being a British national in Germany during World War I,
he was interned at the Ruhleben P.O.W. camp, a civilian detention camp close to Berlin.
(Read more in Wikipedia,
Ruhleben Prisoner of War Camp,
or at Chris Paton's
The Ruhleben Story.)
I recently found his sketchbook from Ruhleben, and I have scanned it and put the images here.
Passport photos,
to the left from his British passport from 1921, when he was 36 years old,
and to the right from his Swedish passport from 1952, when he was 67:
Scans from the sketchbook. There are som empty pages that I left out.
I should probably make some sort of selection, and adjust and crop the images,
but for the time being I've just put the scanned pages here.

Here is a letter from December 1918,
from the Prisoners of War Department,
regarding the repayment of some money deposited with the Camp Treasurer at Ruhleben.
