Walkthrough 2: Creating your character Welcome to Genesis! If you are new to muds and want to get a quick start, just follow this walkthrough and you'll soon learn what mud is all about. In this walkthrough, any command you are supposed to write on the screen will be written on a separate line, starting with "> ", which is not to be written. If, eg, you should type "say hello", it will be written like this: > say hello Ok. Let's get started! > telnet 82.80.226.92 3011 When connecting you are asked for a name. Pick one you feel comfortable with, but be prepared that most well-known character names (Frodo, Legolas, Gandalf, etc) are probably all taken. If, after entering your name, you see "Welcome . Please enter your password:" ...the name is taken, and you will need to disconnect and try again. Once you see "New character.", followed by some information and then the question if you "really want to use the name", you got a name you can use. Answer "y" if you are happy with the name, and move on to selecting a password. Password must be at least 6 characters long, and at least one character in it (not counitng first and last one), must be a special character (preferably a digit, 0-9). Retype the password. Enter your email address (or "none"). Now you will be given the choice of going through the tutorial or skipping it. If you are new to mudding, it's probably best to go through the tutorial, to learn about the basics. If you want to skip the tutorial, type "skip tutorial", (go down to "PICKING A RACE:"). > n You are now in the first room of the tutorial. You see a description of the room you are in (a big sign with text), plus obvious exits (north and south). Read the text to learn about moving, and then go north. > n Another room with a big sign about how to look at things. Read it, and then have a look at the tutorial note in the room. > exa note You are asked to read it. > read note Information about room descriptions. Read and move to next room. > e Another room with another sign. The exit is a little harder to find here. > read sign > exa east wall > exa ivy > se A room with a door. You need a key to unlock it. > read sign > exa door > exa box > get key from box > unlock door with key > open door > n A new room, with a closed gate. The opening mechanism is hidden. > read sign > exa torch > search torch > pull torch > n A new room, with several exits. > read sign This is where you pick your race. To learn more about races, you can check out the rooms around here. But first read about statistics: > e > read sign > w To learn more about the races, go to each room and look at the statues. PICKING A RACE: =============== Now you must chose race. There are 6 to chose between. 1 Human: Average in everything.
