What is STOMPER Ultra++?

STOMPER Ultra++ is a Microsoft Windows (click here if you have a Macintosh) software synthesis program for drum-like sounds. The latest version of STOMPER can always be downloade from this page, which can most easily be found with the following URL

STOMPER Ultra++ uses a very simple synthesis method, mixing pitch-shifting narrow-band noise sources or pure sine waves (zero bandwidth noise, really) together to one sound.

Still, it manages to make faithful reproductions of 909's, 808's, and Simmons drums - and even phatter sounds!

Also, it does much more than just drumsounds, now. In the new ULTRA+ version, it's more of an analog synth-thingy too, with several different waveforms, resonant filters, and other yummy things...

Can I try it too? (Downloading Stomper)

You certainly can! Click here to download the latest version (STOMPER ULTRA++ 4.0) of the self installing STOMPER installation program. For nostalgic reasons, and to cater for old links from all over the web you can also get the installation program embedded in a .zip file, although it is not very much smaller!

• The program comes with a large assortmen of sample sounds in the form of Stomper setting files (.STP and .STU), which you can listen to, modify, and use as a base for own experimentation. Not only deep phat kickdrums, but snaredrums, sound effects, and simulation of old analog vintage synth sounds are included!

• When you are finished with the installation you can delete STOMPER.ZIP and/or STOMPIN.EXE, they are no longer needed!

What's the catch?

Stomper is MusicWare, that means that it it doesn't cost you anything except Music! If you use STOMPER sounds in your music, you are kindly asked to send some of it to me (for my listening pleasure only - you retain all ownership to your music, of course!). A normal casette tape is sufficient, although if you make a commercial CD, tape, or Vinyl, you must send one (1) copy of it to me!

If you are feeling generous and truly like the program, you are encourage to pay the registration fee of $10 via the online credit card payment facility. Note that: This is not required - you do this out of generosity and your free will. Also, it does not relieve you from the MusicWare obligations as defined above!

Yes, it's a nice one, with a great feeling of "community". We are in high gear, discussing software synthesis in general mostly. Sometimes traffic can be high! One interesting project born on the list is the stompilation.

Stompilation!

Check out the Stompilation!! A bunch of folks on the Stomper Mailing list (mentioned above) has collected a set of tracks using Stomper sounds, which eventually - if all goes well - will end up on a CD called the "Stompilation". For now, the Stompilation is only available on the web, where you can download mp3 files of Stomper tracks.

Why ULTRA? And ULTRA++!?!

It's just my corny sense of humor. Once it was called just "Stomper" but I made a pretty large upgrade (adding filters and several waveforms). This new and improved version of Stomper must have a new and improved name!! So I figured, the latest detergent/nappy/whatever is always called "Ultra", "Ultra Plus", or "Ultra special Plus (new and improved)", so I thought, why not called the improved version of Stomper "Ultra"? And with the addition of WAV import, it got the extra "++" name.

Version history

• MUCH FASTER!!!! Now uses a DLL to do the sound calculation in C! Lightning fast, compared to the old crawl. The old mode is still available, though, for masochists!

Stomper on a Mac?

I've had numerous request for a Macintosh version of Stomper. That will not happen direcly (since I have no Mac, and no experience in writing software for it).

However, all is not lost. I'm planning a Java version of Stomper - which will naturally run on the Mac too!

Also, running Stomper under SoftWindows95 has been reported by numerous people to work just fine!.

Another way would be to buy the Ensoniq ASR-X Pro sampler/resampler, which has Stomper built in....
