An interesting parallel to our work is the Transparent Cryptographic File System (TCFS) developed under the direction of Cattaneo and Persiano [CP96]. In the TCFS, the same basic NFS server that we use has been used to create a server that provides a file system offering transparent encryption of data on disk. The design goal for the TCFS is to provide a file system that guarantees that files cannot be read by anyone else than the legitimate owner, thereby excluding communication lines eavesdroppers and the super-user.
It is encouraging to note that Cattaneo and Persiano report that the performance of their server is close to that of commercial servers.
