I am interested in purchasing some of the slowdive stuff... Are those prices quoted in American dollars? What will it cost for a Canadian? I can't do the math.... I'm sorry that I've sent a few personal emails of mine to the list... When replying to mails by persons from this list, I always forget that the reply-to-address is directed here. Some Slowdive content: Any news about the Slowbox? I know many of you have mailed the people suggested of releasing it (what was it... ryko? i'd never heard about it before, have they released something else that is as interesting as the rumored Slowdive collection?) so have you got any replys? The CD itself is scratch-free and clean, yet starts to skip when it goes into Tone Bender. By the time track 8 starts, the cd player throws a fit trying to read the CD and stops. My only guess is the CDs were bad pressings and hence are starting to degrade. My tip to anyone is to back up to cd-r before your copy starts to rot. Screw you, SpinArt! Are there any other notorious CDs that start to skip over time? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Jan 1998 11:15:53 -0500 (EST) From: Claire De Leon! I think you are right - I have had 4 customers in the past two weeks that just ordered this CD and said they couldn't play the last two tracks. I've seen a few others mention it on this list also, I think. One customer of mine said his skipped from the very first note of the CD. So I guess it is a bad pressing....hmmm....good thing I got my copy on vinyl for backup! :) Beware, I guess. I still have about 10-15 copies of this left, but I'll have to start going through every one to see if they're all defective... Miller's "Viral Sonata" (a.k.a. DJ Spooky) and am convinced that he samples In Mind on "Invisual Ocean" (track 5). this association might have been caused by the fact that i listened to them right away, but a part of the song really does sound like the part of in mind where Rachel's voice goes slowly up and then down to an echoing linger. anyway, "Invisual Ocean" is what I expected the In Mind Remixes to be like and not a techno drum machine ruining the ambience of 5ep. People should check out DJ Spooky/Paul D. Miller on Asphodel. He fucks everything up, delay, phlanges, time-strectches, samples of a radiotelescope recordings of Jupiter's magnetosphere, etc. Viral Sonata is much more ambient whereas "Songs of A Dead Dreamer" has more beats like DJ Shadow, but still a lot of cool sounds. He is very much into manipulating sound in order to create cozy aural blanks to lie under. The subtitle for Viral Sonata is "An Inventory of Effects". Well, does anyone else think he actually samples Slowdive or is it just a similarity of sound in that one part? (it wouldn't surprise me, since I think I've heard that he's about to do some sort of collaboration with Kevin Shields and thus must have some understanding of this type of music) -gage >> Well, after 3+ years of owning this CD and never having any problems, >> my copy of In the Presence of Nothing started skipping when I played >> it last night. (yes I know about Seefeel) I find most ambient to be too conceptual and emotionally sterile. I always wished Halstead did more stuff like 'Good Day Sunshine' and 'missing you'... aligato, el midglider ------------------------------ End of Avalyn Digest Vol.98 #10 ********************************
