Just got a copy of Anakin myself.

Mojave 3's 'To whom should I write' reminds me of Bob Dylan.  Anybody
else got any thoughts?

And I think Hope Blister's cover of 'Dagger' was fairly unremarkable
apart from the lush noise at the start of the record.

Well, I can see leaving out Avalyn II since it's really just an extended
instrumental version of Avalyn I, but Golden Hair *IS* essential!!! Fools
they are for leaving it off! And it's not even like it's available on the
Catch the Breeze 7" either (since that's 'Shine').

maybe they left golden hair off because it's a cover.  Less hassle and
cost.  As for avalyn II, well it's just slightly different from avalyn I -
longer instrumental version, right?  Again, one less track to hassle with.

hey,

i was wondering how i might get hold of some of the 4AD sampler releases.
like the new one with gus gus, his name is alive, and mojave 3.  is it
easy to get onto the member list so that i can get the 4AD samples sent to
me.  and about how much does it cost.  oh, i really do appreciate any help
you can give me.  i own slowdive's 3 albums.  i'm too poor to pay for
their ep's but i have all three on tape.  and i only have one mojave
album, and i love it.  i would love to get some other stuff of theirs.

hopefully, i can get on that list.  i love so many of the 4AD bands.

You're probably right - though they did go through all the hassle when
it came to "Some Velvet Morning" (ie. on the Volume _and_ US "Souvlaki"
discs). In any case, this sounds like the most probable explanation to
why they weren't included to me.

videos, or live early tapes, they would play bleed, silver screen, 
joy, song 1(not shine) but another song that was fast called song 1. 
They were saying how they were all new... what happened?  They were

For those interested, you can see how slowdive's live set lists progressed

*09/91 Zap Club : Rachel "this song is very very new, and very unrehearsed

and I believe there was something said about making up the words as they go
along.

all the titles published by Neil. A few were just given a catalogue # and

I agree - these songs are fantastic, and just the Slowdive that I
love, if you know what I mean (ie. of the JFAD-Souvlaki Slowdive
era). And I would probably put all of them on a top-10 Slowdive
songs list, but I think that's mostly because they are "new". I mean,
I didn't get to hear them until after Slowdive had split up, so
they basically became new songs (to me). But in any case, they are
still great, and should have been released.

Which brings the inevitable (sp?) question - how many unreleased
songs are there, which we haven't heard? And will they ever leave
the studio vault of non-selected songs?

I finally found time to listen to it, and To "Whom Should I Write" is
of course utterly gorgeous (IMO). Neil sings really well, but I kind of
miss Rachel's whisper behind it. Sometimes. I'm not sure about the Dylan
likeness though - but considering the few Dylan songs I have sat down
to listen to, I'd say it's Neil's voice that does the trick, giving the
whole song the Dylan similarity case. ;)

I agree somewhat. When it starts I fall into that "oh man, Slowdive!"
trap because it sure sounds Slowdive. But when Louise starts to sing
the lyrics I know by heart, in a clear and unfamiliar way, I get mixed 
feelings for the whole thing.

On one hand, it's great to hear a "cover" (well, it's not really a 
cover is it..) of a Slowdive song from Ivo's own new project (can we
see a Slowdive tribute somewhere down the line?), but on the other,
it really made me miss Slowdive even more.

Have to say that I love the "starry smooth hound" song 'Dreamt u in
a dream' by the way. Touch of urban trip-hop mixed with etheral
sounding synthesizers and samples of talking people (I probably
ought to recognize where these come from, right?). Love it! Really
similar to the 97-98 version of Estonia's Bizarre and even closer
to Sweden's Doris Days (who released their fantastic 12" (and CDS)
'To Ulrike M.' world wide this week even).

The hidden track is "Cuba" right?

By the way, someone asked how to get hold of the Anakin sampler,
and from the info note that came with it (I got it to review it
for a magazine - pure luck!) it will be available from February
9th, on CD only, through the 4AD mail order, Virgin and Chain
With No Name stores and "other selected outlets". This is of
course in Europe (sold at CD single price 4.49 UK pounds). But
it is also readily available in the US. From where I don't know,
but I have seen it at Siren (www.sirencd.com) at least.

you could find the sampler to the 4ad-l list a while ago. Anyone

Come on now, does this really sound like a legitimate reason to you? 
When you buy a car and then give people rides in it, do you expect them
to pay for part of your car payments?  The most anyone I know expects is
for the riders to pay for gas money.  If Dave charged the cost of blank
CDRs ($5-$7 I believe) plus postage then he wouldn't be ripping people
off.

PLENTY of people on this list would tape all of the old songs for anyone
who asked.  I for one would be happy to copy them all (plus stuff that
mr. stack has never even heard) for anyone who wants it if it would stop
you from buying the CDRs from him.  Heck, I could even copy them to DAT
with my brand new DAT machine if anyone out there is interested.  And
you know what?  I don't expect anyone to help me pay the bill for my new
DAT toy.  Feel free to write to me if you are interested in a very high
quality cassette copy of the rarities or even a DAT copy.  All I ask for
is a blank tape and return postage.

For Clarity:  In the recent crackdown on bootlegging, terms have been
confused.  Bootlegs are live recordings that are sold on one of the
audio formats without the band's authorization.  Live tapes are just
tapes, authorized or not, that are traded between fans for no monetary
gain.  Pirate recordings are unauthorized reproductions of previously
released material.  This last category is the one that hurts the
musicians the most.  Please do not support this or any other seller of
pirated music.

With Anakin I have renewed my hopes in the quality of 4ad music.  I agree that 
'To whom should I write' sounds alot like Bob Dylan, but it also seems to have
a heavy Nick Drake influence.  All in all it's a damn fine song as well as the
His Name is Alive and the Scheer tracks.

well the only one i know which hasn't been mentioned before is one they
ended their 12/91 show in brussels with.  it is easily one of my
favorite slowdive songs but that's the only place i've ever heard it. 
maybe it's that Curtains and Carpet song, but a shot of the setlist
looks like it has "Jazz" in it.  Roger, do you know what I'm talking
about?  So there's Colours In Spin, Bleed, Joy, Silver Screen, Song 1,
and that one I'm talking about.  Are those "other untitled tracks
confirmed to be different songs or could they just be songs that people
didn't know the titles of? Plus there's the brief mbv cover that a
certain list member has a copy of.  I won't name names though.
