I tell them that I listen to a more ethereal, avant garde style. I always have them listen to it and let them attach a term.. I give them names....there is no way else to describe the music. Especially Slowdive... No one believes me when I tell them that the music they are listening to is generate through the use of guitars...etc You said it! I think 'Ethereal' is a more accurate word to describe the style. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 04 Apr 1998 19:35:29 -0500 From: "Jason A. Consider this a one-off thing and won't be a weekly posting. Thanks for understanding. :) Jason Paris NeGaTiVe BuRn -- early Friday mornings -- Midnight till 2:00am on CHRY 105.5FM ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Apr 1998 17:33:43 -0800 (PST) From: midglider Subject: RE: (defining Shoegaze) colorwall@juno.com: Y107 in Los Angeles Since everyone is at it, here's my 2 cents! Shoegazing is more than just a style of music: It is a sensibility, a brief and obscure cultural flash in the pan, a temperament towards playing music (little attention to stage presence or staging, or testosterone laden "rock" posturing), all anchored by use of effected guitars (towards the reverbed, chorused, delay area), unique approach to vocals (voice as another textured instrument). Mood and atmosphere are stronger elements than lyrics or singer/songwriter personality. IMHO, the shoegazer movement is neat because it is the bridge between pop and ambient and the last progressive moment in rock/pop (before all went unabashedly retro [Oasis - what kinda crap is that!]) and maybe the last moment in the modern romantic pop tradition (as began by cure, joy division, etc...). - ---travis salisbury wrote: > -----Original Message----- > From: michael maes [SMTP:xymox@mail.aros.net] > > I don't feel that I can tell them what type of music that I listen to. Not nearly as adventurous as "Portal", and without the sublime melodies of "Drawings of Sound", it comes as a bit of a letdown... being their Kranky debut and all. That said, the final track has to be the best thing they've done in years, with a gorgeous guitar melody and Windy's vocals floating high in the mix... classic! Looking forward to seeing them again at Terrastock in two weeks! Let's hope that that kind of musical experimentation cycles itself around again. In 1984 you were scooping up "This Is Your Bloody Valentine" as it hit the shelves, and then "geek" and "sunny sundae smile" and then you were impressed by the drastic change of sound on "ecstasy" and "strawberry wine". Or did you start following them with "you made me realise" and "feed me with your kiss"? I've often wondered if their is anyone in the world who actually followed MBV from the very beginning. They were such a different band back them. As for Slowdive,,,absolutely....When their first ep was released, I had heard alot about them in the Indie MAgs, but when I heard it for the first time, I was instantly hooked. J and M chain's first releases, "psycocandy" I believe would be considered "noise" that Slowdive took to another level At 03:38 PM 4/5/98 -0700, you wrote: >On Sat, 4 Apr 1998, michael maes wrote: > >> i hear you..
