NO WAY!!! Really? Where was this? I just saw Curve here in San Francisco. Funky Chakra opened. I wish WE had Witchman opening up! Speaking of Witchman, If you don't have the Bowery Electric remix double CD, go get it! It has Witchman and Third Eye Foundation doing remixes. I don't know about everyone else but I'm sure there are others on this list that feel that $30 for 4 songs is crazy. "Blue Day" sells, not is worth -- actually sells, for $50+ and it doesn't have that many more songs on it. As illegal as the David Stack thing no has offered any alternative to this cd. The talk about the list cd has been going on for ages but it seems to be nothing more than that. It seems to be nothing but a topic that comes up for discussion when there isn't much else going on on the list. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Apr 1998 18:00:22 PDT From: "Gordon Brown" Subject: Ride discography Hello, I've been searching the net for a decent Ride discography but have found nothing. Does anyone know where one is or actually have one. Thanks for your time. On my side of the whole thing, I'm still waiting for Rachel to tell us what Neil's thoughts about a list CD are. She promised to talk to him about it, and get back - promptly. I realise they are both busy people, and I don't want to nag them about it constantly, so I keep on waiting. //Erik ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Apr 1998 19:47:51 -0700 From: Mitch Bacigalupi Subject: Re: witchman >> someone saw Witchman open up for Curve? how was that? > > i saw bowery electrice open for wichman (should have been the other way > around eh?) in london last summer. he was ok. pretty normal sounding drum > n bass. he used a roland groovebox almost exclusivly. i HATE those things, > but it made it semi interesting even still. Oh man...that sucks. Those MC303's are the worst. I think Roland is single handedly tring to destroy music now, but that's another story... >unfortunatly BE only played >for about 30 min and bitchman didn't "jam" with them or play the remix >track. oh well. Don't you hate that? First of all the opening band is better than the "headliner", then they only play for 30 min on top of it. That's shit. But, think on the bright side...If BE only played for 30 min., would you want someone playing a MC303 (groovbox) over them? I think not... I think not... 23. *shrug* i think i'da rather heard a good dj...i dig most of BE's recorded output but when they played in austin the last time around...they rocked the first time i saw them, but the second time, i mean, come on, can't you change around a loop every so often? the same breakbeat+sample of a scratchy record -- this gets old after about 30 seconds, let alone 5 minutes. i admire the forage into beatland which too few guitar-based musicians seem to want to do, but the fact remains that if you're going to include a programmed beat in your music, you had better make it fucking interesting because 1) there's only so much you can do with a good guitar line, and 2) a good drum beat becomes boring more quickly than a good [drony] guitar line. blame it on poison, mtv, four years of raves, whatever. the fact of the matter remains that static, unchanging beats went out the way of grandmaster flash and kool moe dee. what's going to take its place? hopefully something more thought out than the last BE. joanna life is for fun onnow: best purchase in months, an impulse buy of _light_ at a horrific store ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Apr 1998 11:53:37 -0700 From: voltron Subject: Re: BE (was: Re: witchman) son of dodge dart wrote: > minutes. i admire the forage into beatland which too few guitar-based > musicians seem to want to do, but the fact remains that if you're going to > include a programmed beat in your music, you had better make it fucking > interesting because 1) there's only so much you can do with a good guitar > line, and 2) a good drum beat becomes boring more quickly than a good > [drony] guitar line. blame it on poison, mtv, four years of raves, > whatever. the fact of the matter remains that static, unchanging beats went > out the way of grandmaster flash and kool moe dee. what's going to take its > place? hopefully something more thought out than the last BE. > joanna Are you speaking in reference to the Blow Up 12"? "wow, i can run this shit on repeat forever!" hehe > onnow: best purchase in months, an impulse buy of _light_ at a horrific store do you mean light's full length, _counter_, on wurlitzer jukebox? if so -- i was kinda disappointed at first, b/c i bought the turning/presence 7" earlier and i f'in loved it cuz it was some of the best fsa-type stuff i'd ever heard. but the cd is more orchestrated, song-like, etc. there's only one song on it (#5) that is like the single. oh, and one other song (#7, i think, with the crashing drums, downstrum overdriven guitar, and echoing vocals) i thought was really awesome. the rest i didn't know about. but i came to like it a bit more, though i still don't think it matches up to the single. (speaking of, has anyone heard their more recent, 2nd 7"? didn't get around to checking it out.) but a whole album of that type of stuff would probably be boring after a while, i guess. ; e.e. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Apr 1998 04:35:21 -0400 (EDT) From: butterfly mcqueen Subject: Re: BE (was: Re: witchman) > Are you speaking in reference to the Blow Up 12"? When I first heard > that I thought it sounded like a demo record that should be called "How > to Make Drum n Bass - For the Beginner". LOL, totally! i love the track otherwise, but it's got that tired beat formula that got played out a long time ago. it's that "semtex" (from the 12", not the LP) thing -- loop some amen break variation for a while, play it a reduced speed (usually 1/2 speed) for a while, pause, come in again with the original, etc. though 3ef did *some* interesting modulation within the song. but it's a cool beat ("blow up," that is), and it shows some potential for future BE.... ; e.e. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Apr 1998 14:25:13 -0400 (EDT) From: mike p Subject: Re: witchman > Don't you hate that?
