there's lots I could say, but I think I can sum it up quickly.

It's appearant by this statement that you, sir, are not a musician.
If slowdive wanted to make money, they would have performed a more
lucrative style of music.  NO ONE gets into spacerock, shoegaze, dreampop,
drone, whatever you want to call it to make money.  I think everyone
involved KNOWS that there's hardly any money in the area and the niche is
very small.  The people who play in the bands do it because they love the
music.  If a label or the public should catch on, more power to 'em.

If you REALLY want to know why Slowdive broke up, you can read the avalyn
archives and hear it straight from Rachel's mouth.  But reading the
archives of a list for a band that broke up would probably be living in
the past too much.

i'm thinking about *why* we're still talking about slowdive and mbv, and i
realize that at least for me, these bands hit a nerve inside of me so hard
it's as if i'd found the music that mirrored me the most when i found
these bands.

mbv, slowdive, lush, ride, pale saints... these are all bands that i will
always hold very dearly... songs like "slowdive" and "when the sun hits"
and "melon yellow" and "catch the breeze" are songs that can move me sooo
emotionally.  same goes with "to here knows when" and "starlust" and
"astronaut," and "you tear the world in two.."

i tell the truth when i say that other music i've come to like has not hit
me the same way that shoegazing did... i *love* broadcast and stereolab
and belle and sebastian, but that kind of love doesn't make me weak and
blissed out like the other bands do.

shoegazers affected a certain breed of people, and it's OKAY that we
devote so much time and energy towards them.  i think most of us do
explore new music while simultaneously keeping our love for slowdive ever
strong.

btw... i'm listening to sweet trip now... we've been buzzing about them on
mbv-l and they are just so wondrous.  *this* music hits me very very well.

Just wanted to let you all know about a very cool band!  I recently bought
"umani" by a band called Anymore.  It's incredible!  They are a little
Cocteauish...with some electronics and such.  Amazing vocals by Rebecca...

Anyway...There was a very cool record/CD selection at Terrastock this past
weekend.  I picked up the new Mogwai ep.  It's called Mogwai Fear Satan,
and has a very cool 16 min. long remix by Kevin Shields.  It's really...out
there.  

There is also the new Primal Scream EP of "If They Move, Kill 'Em".  It has
a really trippy Kevin Shields remix, and a great cover of Jesus and Mary
Chain's "Darklands".

andy bell from ride formed hurricane#1 (which loz from ride played in as
well for a while)
mark gardener released a limited solo album
john squire from the stone roses formed the seahorses
ian brown from the stone roses has just released a solo album
sonic boom from spectrum and spacemen3 is solo for EAR
reni from the stone roses is doing solo stuff (nothing released yet)
mani from the stone roses is in primal scream
the jesus and mary chain are back on creation and have a new single out
called cracking up and it is awesome
shaun ryder and bez from the happy mondays formed black grape
the charlatans are still going strong (but not rob collins cause he had his
head chopped off in a car accident)
the verve reformed and are back again BIG TIME!(as you'd all know)

Comparing slowdive to Billy Ray Cyrus and disco music betrays your fundamental
lack of knowledge of music theory and pop culture. There IS such a thing as
objectivity in art, and music is no exception. One good starting point would
be, does the artist in question write their own material? Well, many of the
huge pop stars do not. (Celine Dion, Bonnie Rait, Billy Ray Cyrus...) Although
this alone can't be directly linked to "quality", an artist that performs
songs written by professional songwriters is not aiming to break any new
musical ground - they're looking for the next #1 hit. Apealing to as many
people as possible is the goal.

Listening to slowdive, it should be clear that the music is far from
mainstream. Therefore their primary goal was not to sell the most records.
(Although I doubt they would have complained if Just For A Day went triple platinum.)

Maybe you just can't relate to the concept of creativity for it's own sake
because you've lost your imagination.

If slowdive were interested in putting food on the table, they probably would
have been doing the scores for commercials, and sitting down with record
honchos at Sony talking with producers about making their music more "hip" and "edgy".

Music *IS* just another job to people who only perform or only write, but when
you create something and present it to the world, it's more than a job.

But clearly you can't understand any of this or you wouldn't have posted the
drivel that you have.

Speaking of Revolver, I was in Manchester, England last week on
vacation and I saw a bill for the Road House and it said Revolver and
Wild Strawberries.

I was so excited that I couldn't wait for the gig, but that only
lasted about 2 seconds when I realized that it couldn't possibly be
the Revolver and Wild Strawberries(Canada) that I love!

I called the club and it wasn't them, they were both local Manchester
bands,
. . . oh well.

the Pastels and Yo La Tengo a few months back.

the Spaceheads.  They are a great live band (see my ranting and raving
about Terrastock that I sent yesterday)
