The songs are basically drifting soundscapes, free of bass and percussion, as opposed to actual structured songs. If you like ambient music, you'll **probably** really dig llc. If ambient music bores you, look else where. I think llc has structure it is just not easily noticed....listen real carefully and you'll notice structure...they vocals fit w/ certain guitar parts etc.. travis ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Apr 1998 03:14:24 EDT From: Catchbreez Subject: Re: help - shoe pie well i have 3 at my work disc go round in houston they are 7.99 i do mail orders if you are interested in them email me catchbreez@aol.com steve ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Apr 1998 14:51:46 -0400 (EDT) From: mike p Subject: Re: great drum and bass > cut yourself up to panacea! yeah. id recomand panacea too. and penny black (the tripple album). this is the scariest of the scary. That's what I call jangly, ethereal, dreamy and shoegaze! Just *so* beautiful. Same sort of revelation Blind Mr. Jones had on me when I discovered them (through the list - once again). I really need to get hold of whatever they have released, but I can't remember if anyone posted info about where they hide on the net (if at all?) or where their records are available? What label are they signed to? //Erik *bliss* ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 21:50:42 +0200 From: "LOSING TODAY" Subject: starflyer 69 could you tell me more about starflyer 69 music? Where could i find their records? Which is their best album? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Apr 1998 02:25:46 -0700 From: "Tim Warner" Subject: Re: starflyer 69 Actually, it's starflyer 59. But that's cool. Well, they are on Tooth and Nail records, which is at www.toothandnail.com, I think. They are one of my favorite bands around! I like their silver and gold albums respectively. I think I like silver (their first) a little better. It's a little more raw, I think. Anyway, their newest, Americana, is a little more, well...rock oriented or something. Black Sabbath riffs and all, but still kind of shoegazy. Hard to describe. They have always had walls of feedbacky/super-low-end guitar, which I love...and mumbly vocals. I'm not doing them any justice. I love 'em, though. Which is their best album? Starflyer 59 is on tooth and nail records which is usaually sold in most record stores....or try a place that sells christian rock music... IMO the silver album is the best, but thats open to discussion... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Apr 1998 17:55:39 EDT From: Catchbreez Subject: velour 100 much better than starflyer and on the same lable ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Apr 1998 18:25:16 -0400 (EDT) From: Lorraine Lelis Subject: Re: velour 100 On Sat, 25 Apr 1998, Catchbreez wrote: > much better than starflyer and on the same lable speaking of velour 100......... my band is opening for them on sunday, may 3 in new york city. new yorkers, please do come! They'ver released two albums, "Drop" which is the straight out dreampop one, and Penetration, which is considerably more ambient. That is just my luck - bands breaking up before one actually finds them - and, it seems, the evolution of the shoegaze bands into ambient. (somehow, _spooky_ doesn't do a single thing for me.) but for me, if a shoegazing band is anything less than wonderful, it's actually more tiresome to listen to than mediocre bands of other varieties. the cliches, when not pulled off well, are SO ANNOYING! give me generic indie rock anyday when it comes down to that. starflyer 69, kitchens of distinction, 7% solution, everything on bedazzled... total disappointment. quite opinionated today, ; e.e. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 00:27:15 -0400 (EDT) From: Michael Gilham Subject: down with shoegazing, down w/ mediocrity! :-) On Sat, 25 Apr 1998, butterfly mcqueen wrote: >> Better than shoegazer bands decending into pure crap a la Ride and Lush. > > actually, i'm glad lush moved out of the shoegazing thing; their sound was > getting pretty tired, and it took on a new life with _split_ and _lovelife_. > but that said, _gala_ is my fav album by them. (somehow, _spooky_ doesn't > do a single thing for me.) From where I stand, SPLIT is the best overall of their 3 records: I do not count GALA, 'cause it's not a proper album; but rather a compilation w/ a couple "exclusive" tracks ... Spooky has it's moments; but I don't think Guthrie did much for it in many cases, and some songs are are surely the worse for his production ... It seems he really didn't have his "right head on" when he worked on that on. Sadly, anyone who knows about Robin's personal life could imagine why that might be the case ... > but for me, if a shoegazing band is anything less than wonderful, it's > actually more tiresome to listen to than mediocre bands of other varieties. > the cliches, when not pulled off well, are SO ANNOYING! give me generic > indie rock anyday when it comes down to that. > > starflyer 69, kitchens of distinction, 7% solution, everything on > bedazzled... total disappointment. Well, as I've mentioned before, I personally could do w/o the "shoegaze" categorization .... But, i do understand what is _meant_ by the category; and I wouldn't put "KITCHENS" in it! It seems to me that the only thing which would really qualify them to be put in a genre w/ someone like Slowdive, et al., is that the gtr. player used a whole mess of Effects .... Yes, I can see your point re. BEDAZZLED bands. Yet, most of their stuff I wouldn't think of as, if I must, "shoegaze." One BEDAZZLED band, the orig. one, actually, isn't bad: STRANGE BOUTIQUE. Some of their stuff is very good actually ... though, I have, admittedly, some bias where they're concerned ... In any case I don't think anyone has ever referred to Strange Boutique as "shoegazers." And if they had, then they would have had to have a very different conception of the term than me! Strange Boutique took their name, by the way [for anybody that cares] from a MONOCHROME SET song ... Because of the singer's sometimes dodgy fashion sense they [S.Boutique] were embraced by the Goth-crowd: leading them to being sort of falsely identified as a Goth band -- a condition which didn't do them any favours in the grand scheme of things ... Okay then, --M PS ...last thing 'bout Bedazzled: I've heard some mention that the short lived ULTRA CHERRY VIOLET were a credible band along the lines of slowdive or something [obviously NO ONE is quite like Slowdive! ...] ... Yet, personally, I can't speak to the above ... Which is pretty bad, since I've been acquainted w/ everyone that played in the band ... Erm, ... did see them play live once and one song still sticks in my head as being very good ... oh, well, it doesn't seem there's much of a case to be made here ... But, all I know is, there are some out there who would seem to want to make one ;-) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 01:22:15 -0400 (EDT) From: Lorraine Lelis Subject: lush albums i am totally biased towards lush, and i love all the albums, but gala is definitely the winner in my book. i think that spooky is beautiful too, but in the way that women with make-up on can look beautiful. "gala" is the plain jane that's beautiful without make-up. actually, my *two* favorite lush releases are gala and the for love ep. "starlust" is such perfect dreampop lor ------------------------------ End of Avalyn Digest Vol.98 #58 ********************************
