If this was the band then they were pretty cool. I went to the show only having heard of Windy and Carl. They have that same wall of reverb sound but maybe a bit more upbeat at times. Very much like Just For A Day. However, this may have been a different band as I never saw a flyer. I will find out. (forwarded) From: David Poppie Speaking of which has anyone ever heard of Porcupine Tree? They are spacey/psych, a bit overproduced at times, but otherwise great! Also I have been out of the loop for awhile, has or will Mojave 3 be playing in Chicago? Can anyone help me out with this one? Thanks! Even more wood on the fire then. :) It definitely sounds like a "must hear" band - I'll roam the net again! //Erik ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 02 May 1998 22:36:01 +0600 From: box-and-whiskers Subject: Re: Grimble Grumble > LP Grimble Grumble Grimble Grumble US ltd numbered slv of 500 > 10" Grimble Grumble Only Point Of Entry 1st US 10" on Burnt Hair recs > CD Grimble Grumble S/T US CD on Won't Go Flat > -- > Which really makes them essential "material". ;-) Anyone with any > info to share? yes, i think grimble grumble would appeal to most slowdive fans. from what i've heard, their music can be both 'shoegazey' (sorry michael) and 'droney', but tending more toward the former than the other less impressive 'michigan spacerock' bands with which they're generally included. the self-titled cd is a couple of very nice long tracks comprised of a few shorter pieces, with parts that are more 'song-oriented' as well as interludes of both melodic and dissonant guitar noise. i've heard one of songs on the 10" which is also quite good. additionally, they've shared at least two split 7"s with the azusa plane and windy and carl ('the enraptured yuletide forty-five'). don't know anything about the lp though. and as far as info on the 'net goes, i haven't seen any either. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 02 May 1998 22:47:23 +0600 From: box-and-whiskers Subject: Re: Pale Saints > Since we're on the topic, anyone remember the original band/artist that > performed "Blue Flower", it was originally done by a band called slaphappy in the 70s. > which Pale Saints did an incredible cover of on > the "Throwing Back The Apple" EP ? it's also included on the u.s. issue of _in ribbons_ (though not the u.k. one). ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 May 98 02:54:58 UT From: "Lisa Johnson" Subject: re: Durutti Column, Blue Flower, and Grimble Grumble Re: Durutti Column I'm not sure which Durutti Column LP you'd associate with Mr. Brooks, but IMO the one to get is the 2nd LP "LC". Gorgeous reverbed melodies and subdued vocals... it seems to have "aged" quite well in terms of 80's production qualities, whereas IMO some of Vini's later work seems to suffer a bit from plodding synth drums, etc. This has been re-issued as a CD on Factory records (import only last time I checked), but the original packaging for the vinyl (if you can find it: Factory release 44) is so nicely done, you'll be disappointed with the low quality of the re-issue (which apparently aims to celebrate the Factory label more than the original artist). Re: "Blue Flower" The Pale Saints' cover of "Blue Flower" is credited to Peter Blegvad and Anthony Moore, who worked together with (Dagmar Krause) in the early 70's British group Slapp Happy. I'm not familiar with this particular song, but if you're a fan of Krause's Henry Cow/Art Bears material you should check out the 1st Slapp Happy release "Acnalbasac Noom" on Cuneiform, which was recorded with members of Faust as a backing band. Note: this LP was later re-recorded with professional session musicians and released as "Casablanca Moon" (in place of the original Faust recordings which IMO are superior in every way). FYO: Slap Happy Humphrey is an unrelated Japanese trio (studio only) who recorded a s/t album of 70's Japanese pop covers in 1996 for Bath Records (recommended) with the lead singer of the psych-rock band Angels 'n Heavy Syrup (also Japanese, also recommended, on Charnel House). Re: Grimble Grumble at Terrastock 2 I don't know if a website exists, but I did write the live review about Grimble Grumble a couple weeks ago, and yes, they are definitely worth checking out. I haven't yet listened to their 12" LP, but the10" EP (which is supposedly similar in sound) is quite enjoyable if you're into FSA, Windy & Carl, etc. However, their live performance at T2 expanded greatly on their studio recordings, incorporating elements of early Verve/Slowdive material into their ethereal wash, along with bursts of noise from a mini-moog. They were simply much more dynamic live, and I found myself wishing they would incorporate some vocals to build on their lovely melodies, but apparently they're satisfied with layers of delayed guitar and ambient textures (for now anyway). In addition to the releases Erik listed earlier, they have split 7-inch singles with Azuza Plane and Windy & Carl, both on Enraptured Records. I saw them open up for windy & carl at spaceland in LA 2 or 3 weeks ago and would definitely recommend them live. They seemed more interesting to me than the drony sounds of Windy and Carl. I got the cd however and I just don't recognize too much of what I heard live. Perhaps they mostly played stuff off the 10" or something but the cd seems to be much less song oriented than what I heard live. Someone mentioned that there's songs w/ vocals on the cd, but I don't hear any... it seems to lean a bit more towards the experimentally side of the repetive drony ambient guitar thing... one of the tracks even has the sound of a phone left off the hook... pretty annoying. Another song has a similar melody from the movie "close encounters of the third kind". I'd recommend the cd for someone into the drony side of windy and carl... but don't really hear the slowdive comparison much. Live, they came across as a more ambient sounding Galaxie 500 w/ loud bursts of noisy guitar... defintely fantastic. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 01 May 1998 21:45:51 -0500 From: John Van Subject: Re: cds i found...and bought for me self steve, Did you buy all this stuff from Soundwaves??
