And it is scheduled for a release in September... The advance promos come in slimline jewel cases without any artwork. The catalog number in the matrix is CAD 8018CD. Track listing: Who Do You Love - Give What You Take - Some Kinda Angel - All Your Tears - Yer Feet - Caught Beneath Your Heel - Keep It All Hid - Baby's Coming Home - To Whom Should I Write On another note: the old Mojave 3 postal address is no longer working. Stay tuned for the new one. Hi again!! >Umm, ehhh, well, I LOVE swervedriver, every single note they put out, >but Raise is by far not their psychedelic side. It's their rocking >album, you can actually head-bang to parts. Mmmm... intersting. The thing that really struck me about Mezcal Head (and their subsequent albums) was that they really seemed to have stripped their sound right down to a very much 4-on-the-floor meat-and-3-veg type of sound that just pounds in a real heavy metal kinda way. The opening track on Mezcal Head sets the mood for the whole album. The thing that sets Raise apart, I think, is that there are SO MANY overdubs. I mean, the main texture of the album is essentially not that different to their others except for the crucial fact of there being layers and layers of guitars overdubbed and this is what's been missing on their subsequent albums. If you listen to Raise VERY, VERY closely you'll hear all sorts of very quiet guitar riffs that glide along over the top of the main melodies. This is all the way through the album. I forget how many overdubs they actually did (around 6 or 7, from memory - or, at least, that's what I was TOLD) but there are several different melodies going over the top of each track on Raise, some of them VERY psychadelic. Listen very closely to Rave Down. There is actually a very high pitched guitar going over the top of that track all the way through which is very different to the "main thrust", if you will, if the songs (which is very much bone-crunching guitar grinds - and lots of them!!!). But if you can pick the oh-so-quiet tingling guitar going over the top of it all then you'll see what I mean about the rest of the album and if you follow it all the way through the song, it's like "WOW!!!!!!!! Why didn't I notice this before?!?!?!?!". Very psychadelic sounding, indeed. They haven't repeated any of this on their other albums - none of the overdubs, either. Just stripped down pounding, almost metal tunes. >But I think the lps they will appeal most to people on this list are >probably Mezcal Head and Ejector Seat Reservation (my personal fav). My recommendation would be to get Raise (or the 1st three EP's: "Son of a Mustang Ford", "Rave Down" and "Sandblasted" - although they're a bit tricky to get these days) and work your way forward from there. >Never Lose that feeling/Never learn - an 11 minute song on the US >release - is just so beautiful and spaced out, with this dreamy sax in >there (the only song of theirs with a sax) it's mind blowing. The 11 minute version is on both the UK and Australian pressings, also, and maybe even other presings (I wouldn't know, haven't come across any other pressings, myself). I agree that this is a brilliant track!!! Everyone should go out and buy it now!!! It is more in the Raise vein, though - it was originally going to be a track on the Raise album that they scrapped and dug then up after one of the members was stuffing around with a tape recorder in the studio one day and accidently played an untreated riff backwards and thought it sounded great, so played it to the rest of the band who agreed. So they added some more overdubs and the played-backwards riff became the main riff for "Never Lose that Feeling". So if you're able to play "Never Lose that Feeling" backwards, then this would give you an idea of how the song was originally supposed to sound (ie. you'll hear the guitar loop as it was originally played and recorded). Some useless trivia for you... >If you never heard of Swervedriver, go BUY ALL THEIR ALBUM TODAY! ;) I second that!!! Start with Raise, though... for my money, I haven't liked anything much after "Never Lose that feeling" in 1992. But there you go... Alister ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 May 1998 16:30:41 +1000 (EST) From: Alister Thomas Subject: Ocean Blue Hi again! Does anybody out there like Ocean Blue??? Mmmm... I bought "Cerulean" a few months aga and was sorely disappointed with it (it was recomended to me). To me it sounded like a 90's version of Emerson, Lake and Palmer in the sense that it strikes me as being very middle-of-the-road progressive type rock with a few jangly guitars thrown in for good measure but doesn't really actually do much. Does anyone know whether any of their other albums are any good??? (bearing in mind that I didn't like "Cerulean"). They seem to have a reputation for fitting in to the dream-pop/ethereal/shoegaze (???) category. Based on what I'vew heard, I honestly can't see how this can be justified... Any comments??? I like Cerulean (their 2nd album) and their first album (which is self-titled), but their third album was really weak(bout two good songs i'd say) and i never got around to getting their fourth album. They definitily aren't dream-pop/ethereal/shoegazey at all. Well maybe like 1/8 dreamy, the rest just normal pop stuff(if that makes any sense). I think they are a decent band though. Actually i heard their last album wasn't too bad. Maybe cause the one guy who plays keyboards/sax quit, and they new guy play more guitar and no sax at all, probably a good idea. ryan At 04:30 PM 5/28/98 +1000, you wrote: >Hi again! > >Does anybody out there like Ocean Blue??? 'cause i have no idea how to do it... and i don't have time to learn... there is one other catch too... if they are holding the blue day mp3 there for people on the list to download, then could they also hold onto a copy of the chemical brothers anti nazi mix (very, very rare mix cd) for people to download as well... so anyone who is interested, then let me know. and no, i am not going to mail the mp3 out individually, that takes waaaay too long. later, dave ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Jun 1998 15:08:26 +0000 From: "wade@tapehouse.com" Subject: recommendations..
