Their first incarnation as Slowdive saw them dabbling with hazy atmospherics before venturing, less successfully, into ambient electronica. Now, with new single 'Who Do You Love', they turn up a more traditional card with floaty multi-layered harmonies and somnolent strummings. Although vaguely reminiscent of the footware-ogling days of yore, the emphasis has shifted from feedback to emotionally-charged, pastoral semi-acoustics. To contribute a melancholic country-tinged twang to the proceedings, they've even recuited steel pedal guitarist BJ Cole, who ambles in halfway through the lovely 'Baby's Coming Home'. As it ends, Halstead spots Bernard Butler in the front row and smiles. Welcome to Mojave 3. Not so much shoe-gazing as star- gazing. ------------------------------------ A review is also published in this weeks Melody Maker.....but as I can't stand the paper, (Due to its recent dumbing down - and general poor quality) I read it in the shop instead of purchasing it (Ha!). However, the reviewer was not convinced.....'Mojave 3 spent too much time messing about tuning up' (I hope they never review a Belle and Sebastian gig then!). Hope this is of use! (no offense what-so-ever to Tim, he's doing a great job) And since you're asking: "What more can you ask for"... how about some live ads this time. Over & out, CB ps: someone was asking about a ticket for The Verve in NYC... Be warned.. I wouldn't be at all surprised if that tour is canceled. There is major sh*tski going down in The Verve camp-o-la. Simon has been *ill*, Nick quit (again) and they have been canceling European dates steadily. I think they've pulled out of V98 as well. Just be prepared for a possible cancellation. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Jul 1998 13:31:36 +0000 From: "wade@tapehouse.com" Subject: Re: Mogwai/Bardo R.I.P. I Don't think Mogwai should be labeled in the dreampop/shoegazing genre along with bands like Slowdive and MBV. I don't know, I bought ten rapid a year ago and thought it was so lame. I guess it falls into whatever category Low and bands like that go into. But I don't find any blissful, escaping moments out of Mogwai's music. I talk to a lot of my friends about what we chat about on the list. Lately there's been lots of talk about Mogwai and Bardo Pond. Quite frankly, I don't get anyone who thinks Mogwai and Bardo Pond are making great music. A lot of people left after Bardo Pond took stage after windy and Carl played in NYC because they sucked! Maybe it was just a bad show.. Just because these bands are new and are sort of trying a new style doesn't mean they deserve to be ranked up their with the brilliant minds of Slowdive and company. So a lot of my friends who also listen to quite a lot of MBV, slowdive type stuff don't get why people on the list are so jazzed up with Bardo and Mogwai. I'm sorry but colfax Abbey, Secret shine, bowery electric, FSA, swallow, those are bands that are carrying on the legacy of a brilliant sound. Maybe I just look for more in a band...........like catchy tunes. wade ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Jul 1998 12:20:22 +0000 From: "wade@tapehouse.com" Subject: Re: Thoughts on Blue Day... spike on cellos rules!! wade ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Jul 1998 19:22:17 GMT From: vince@deehan.demon.co.uk (Vince Deehan) Subject: Re: Mojave 3 Live gig... I saw practically every release at one point or another yet never noticed the band untill they split up (First album I purchased was Souvlaki) - after that, getting a hold of singles became a chore - I remember trying to order their entire back catalog of singles and after three months only comming up with the Morningrise EP.... Ooooooh, forgive me for being pretentious!!!!!! Interestingly enough, I had all their EP's (minus "Holding our breath") before I even knew what the hell Blue Day was!!! I mean, I was a at a friend's house one day and he was playing me "Holding our breath" to let me know what I was missing out on and I mentioned to him that I'd seen a Slowdive release in the catalogues called "Blue Day" and asked him if he knew what it was. "Oh", he says, "that album is just a collection of their 1st three EP's but isn't as good because it has tracks missing". "Oh", I said, "then why bother buying it??"... "I dunno", said my friend, "maybe because my girlfriend found it cheap and didn't have it...". This was back in '94 and neither of us had any idea that it was such a collectors item (although it may not have been back then...). It was only 6 months ago when I first started using the Internet that I discovered how valuable it seems to be to most Slowdive collectors... must admit I was a little shocked by it all... but then again, as was pointed out to me, not everyone would have known what was on it... or maybe I just put the cart before the horse in rather pretentiously pointing out that it has their "first 3 EP's on it"... > wait, let me get this straight. so, if i buy all three eps then i won't > need blue day? Precisely... it is missing "Avalyn II", "Catch the breeze" and "Golden hair". You'll probably do your bank account a favour by giving it a miss and trying to track down the EP's, IMO. Anyone...? The split occured late last year [i believe]; to no one's surprise, really, given the sad demise of Chris Acland ... I went around to the side door where the Polish Army thingy is and where bands normally go in and some guy was moving paintings around in the hallway and opened the door for us (my girlfriend and I). We walked right in and never spent a dime. Anyway on to the show... Sweet Jesus- this was the first opener and were horrible. Sounds like swervedriver if they only knew how to play 3 chords and had an annoying peppy girl singer. plus they are from australia. 16 Deluxe- sounds like sweet jesus except from texas. i don't know why people like these guys...there are so many better bands out there. they were noisy and annoying. J&MC- amazing as always. they played (in no order) degenerate, sugar ray, head on, happy when it rains, cracking up, love rock n roll, hate rock n roll, snakedriver, reverence (was the encore and they played it really slowly then sped up, then slowed down), i can't remember anything. I have the set list at home. They played 14 songs total. The t-shirts they sold said in the coloring of the album cover "Fuck Jesus" or something like that on a white shirt. William once again asked someone to suck his cock and they stopped and started 2 songs over again. sorry this review is not that informative but I am wiped. Jared ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Jul 1998 09:36:22 +0000 From: "wade@tapehouse.com" Subject: Re: Jesus and Mary Chain at Irving Plaza 7/15 Well, I was at the show last night, and I was a bit disappointed with the whole affair. Jared's right the first two bands could've just spontaneously combusted and I wouldn't have given two shits. Once the Mary Chain came on, things picked up. there was something weird about the whole thing though. To me, the sound wasn't very powerful and overwhelming. The songs were weak compared to how they come across on the latest record. It looked like Jim was getting pissed at their extra guitar player a lot. they would begin a song and Jim would say "stop...stop..start again!" that was interesting. The Reid's sister came out to sing Moe Tucker, she looks to be 16. If I was rating the show, I'd give it a 6, due to the sound and the fact that JAMC looked old, and hadn't toured in a while. wade ------------------------------ End of Avalyn Digest Vol.98 #102 ********************************
