minutes), and Silvania are featured on both tapes...

Dear all

Hello, my name is Mark Samuels and I am an English shoey.  My passion 
for Slowdive is unbounded and I was first introduced to them through 
a music programme (now dead unfortunately) called Snub TV, on BBC2, 
where the Morningrise video was premiered.

Since then I have religiously followed the band, both through their 
releases and through their live performances.  There's no point me 
telling you why Slowdive are/were so wonderful because you all already 
know.  Personally, I'm a big fan of the Just for a Day album and the 
early EPs, my particular faves being Morningrise, Albatross, Brighter 
and the achingly beautiful (almost a hit, it reached 52 in Britain) 
Catch the Breeze.

It's strange to hear how you all have problems buying Slowdive and 
Mojave 3 stuff in the US because over here its raedily available.  
This is aided by the fact their popularity is limited and a large 
number of shops sell second-hand, or over-stocked,  Slowdive material.  

For example, I was able to buy the flexi, fully packaged, at a Record 
Fair, for stlg2.  Just for a Day usually sells for around stlg2 on vinyl 
(second-hand or new) and most of the EPs can be picked up for a 
similar price.  If you want cheap Slowdive stuff, this is the place!

Finally, I was lucky enough to see Mojave 3 when they played at the 
Highbury Garage, in London, on Decemebr 16th.  Poor old Rachel moaned 
about her ear drum and they all sat down on chairs at the front of 
the stage.  Despite the obvious quietness of the songs, the 
reproduction was as good as you'd expect and the rousing finale of 
Mercy was particularly sparkling.  If you get the chance to see them, 
don't miss out, it's still something special.

Until next time, keep believing in Slowdive and you'll go to effects 
pedals heaven.  I'll keep you all in mind, Mark.

I was driving to band practice after work yesterday.  For christmas, I 
got a portable CD player that you can hook up in your car.
I decided to put Pygmalion on.  This was the first time I listened to it 
in the car.
Woah, DON'T do this.
For some reason, i sped up to 80 mph, and it seemed like I was going 
slow.  The tranciness of freeway driving mixed with the music is a wierd 
effect, and probably not safe:)

My guess is that since Pygmalion is a fairly quiet album, you turned it up a
bit more than for other CDs to be able to hear it above the engine and the
road noise. Studies have shown that the louder the music is, the faster you
end up driving, without really being aware of it. I think it's because when
you can hear the music properly, you have no perception of your speed
because you can't hear the engine. Or something.

o that acoustic set in Berkeley yesterday as well..thought i'd add a
bit more info.........her is the set list of the songs played..I am pretty
sure in this order, however I'm not positive!:

After all, Sarah, new song!, Where is the Love, 2nd new song!,
Youre Beautiful and..... Mercy (incredible!!!!!)

         the set was very very good!!.... it was just Rachel, and Ian and
Neil playing, but the rest of the band was there as well. Afterwards they
hung out a bit and signed autographs etc... and I got to speak with them for
a while.....(and yes, they were very friendly, and very unintimidating.. : )
I asked Rachel if she got bugged much from us here on Avalyn..she said "no it
wasnt a problem at all", with a smile on her face.

so far Neil said they have had good reception from the Lush crowd..and after
the tour they will be recording a whole new album!, he said it would be the
same line up instrument wise..piano acoustics drums , but the said  "it will
be a little bit different than the last one".

Both the new songs were very good, reminicent of 'Ask me tomorrow'... 
heres a bit of the lyrics i cought from the first new song....     maybe
Rachel can post the rest of the words correctly -and more completly- later??

about slowdive (RIP)  and mojave 3, two of the two grandest bands ever.

anyway, i'm from new jersey and i love lots of ambient, ethereal music,
noise-pop...stuff such as my bloody valentine, cocteau twins, dead can dance,
xymox, joy division, lush, etc...  oh! and mojave 3 and lush are coming to new
york city on may 2nd.  hopefully i'll be there!!

yeah I know. I live 6 blocks from Mod Lang...but I was in SF traffic at
4:00pm. Damn. I was trying to remember all week long and then...boom, I
forgot and stayed in SF too long.  Oh, well.

With reference to some of the recent topics of discussion.....

4AD, somewhat like Creation with Slowdive, don't seem too bothered about 
advertising Mojave 3.  There were a couple of adverts in the music 
papers and magazines but they weren't exactly everywhere.  It's 
funny, because 4AD do tend to go in for advertising in quite a big 
way.  I mean, when there is Cocteaus, Lush or Belly release they 
usually take out full page adverts.

While we're on the subject of the Cocteaus and Lush, the Cocteau 
Twins new album is bloody great.  Lush, on the other hand, have, in 
my opinion, gone shit and decided to jump on the stupid Britpop 
bandwagon.  Ladykillers?  More like good music killers.

Anyway, back to Mojave 3.  They were interviewed by NME just after 
the album release and were featured in the 'on' pages.  Nice little 
interview.  The album got a great write up and the person reviewing 
it went into raptures but only gave it 6 out of 10 because they used 
to be Slowdive.  You get that a lot.  There was a review of one of 
their gigs a couple of weeks back which asked how was it possible for 
Mojave 3 to have risen from the remains of the worst band ever, 
Slowdive.   Pathetic.

Anyway, on the topic of bands sounding like Slowdive, there aren't 
really too many.  Bands don't like to cite truely gifted and 
innovative musicians as influences.  Most tend to sound like the 
Valentines (ie. a bit more noisey and quicker!).  Apart from the 
obvious refernce points (like MBV, the Cocteaus, EARLY! Lush, 
Chapterhouse and Seefeel) there are a couple of others worth 
investigating.

Bark Psychosis
Fabbo ambient, late night jazz-shoegazing.  Marvelous use of 
repetition and minimalist guitar (chech out the wonderful 'Hex' 
album).  A joy to behold infact.

Flying Saucer Attack
Despite the clearly rubbish name this band are actually quite good.  
Lots of noisey but carefully controlled guitar with some lovely minor 
chord changes.  A bit rough at the edges and the singer's not the 
best but definately worth investigating.

Sweet Jesus
Now dead (well, they've changed their name to Venus and they're not 
as good any more) but once great.  Quite like MBV (listen to the ace 
'Phonefreak Honey' single).  Fast, loud and lots of distorted guitar.

Finally, it's nigh on impossible to get the 'Slowdive sound'.  I know 
this sounds crap but I used to love the sound checks at Slowdive gigs 
when the soundmen would come on stage plug in the guitars and just 
strum.  Oh, that sound......

To get a 'Just for a day' type sound its strange how effective a 
heavy metal effet pedal put through chorus is.  Basically it's a case 
of getting 10 different pedals and playing with the settings.  Maybe 
we could get Rachel to give us a guide!

I have really never understood the intense animosity of the british press 
towards slowdive. If you read US (AP etc.) they really gave slowdive good 
reviews. Even reading the latest article on mojave3, the writer praised 
slowdive throughout. I really can't even begin to understand it! I never 
read NME/MM etc. as I really couldn't give a fuck about menswear or dodgy 
or other shit like that, and can't believe that they get such praise, 
while real art like slowdive was slagged. At least they are being a bit 
more kind with mojave, but it really is disheartening to read stuff like 
"they were the worst band ever."

I have to agree with what your saying.  I really don't know what the
facination with the country twang thing by British subjects.  Mojave
incorporates a little C&W and boom, everything is o.k.
Go figure. Maybe Slowdive should have done this a lot earlier on some of
its songs.  Who knows.

P.S. Check out a band called Low: I Could Live In Hope.  I really think
they are better than Mojave 3. A must hear album.  It was released in 1994
on Vernon Yard Recordings, so maybe you already have.

    When a band like Slowdive is doing something new, or innovative, 
there is always the big posibility to generate incomprension -or even 
animosity- to their art, remember slowdive were always doing avant 
garde music -even with the 5eps-, so that's why some critics didn't 
accept them, didn't understand them, but what can we do? that's too a 
caracteristic of the avant garde, to generate reject in the people, 
so accustomed to the conventional things.
    And that's why too Mojave is easy accepted, they're doing now a 
kind of music really conventional, -that's bad in my dictionary- no 
one's discussing that they don't have feeling, they really have it!, 
but they should interest too in the sonic experimentation, in the 
innovation, and not to be just sentimentalists. 
    
    Anyway they have done with "Ask me tomorrow" a *great* 
conventional album. And the Low one is great too. The same goes to 
Red House Painters, Mazzy Star, etc..

I think the thing to remember is that the music journos slagging Slowdive
now aren't the ones who raved about them in the beginning, unless they
happen to be particularly fickle

No, it's not that hard actually. The key to it all is to get a decent
digital reverb unit, and playing really really loud (as Slowdive did) helps
emphasise the hugeness of the sound

Well, if Slowdive were able to get the Slowdive sound, it shouldn't be that
hard. But generally, trying to get exactly the same sound as your favourite
bands with the same equipment is pretty pointless - where's the excitement
in that? Making your own sound is much more interesting.

Mohave 3's set was absolutely positivley INCREDIBLE.
everything from the venue, to the sound, to the quality of music performed
was great from each and every band!

it was a mesmerizing experience for me, to put it mildly...
everyone was in good spirits..Ian in his cowboy hat strutting around, Rachel
smiling sweetly between singing and playing bass, and Neil singing his heart
out..... Poppy and Simon.
(lets not forget them) were essential to the whole sound.....too bad they
couldnt get a grand piano up there!..but thats touring i guess!!! 
anyway.. 
      Lush was very very impressive actually..not too many new tunes at
all..they actually stuck to older material..  : )  
playing most of split and a little off spooky etc/

sorry for such a long post, but I figured some people might enjoying reading
about this show!   for those of you seeing the show tonight in LA... i am
jelous of you .... it will be excellent!  byeeeeeee

umm i forgot to mention  a couple things about Mohave's set.. during teh S.f.
show : 
 during tomorrows taken..you knowthw part where the song quiets an slows down
and the celo comes in, duing this part neil same like a verse or two of
something adding abit ao something differnt to the whole feel of the
song...still very nice...andi also forgot to mention that live each and every
song was SO mucch more powerful, from 
"where is the love" there was this fabulous climax with Ian pounding on his
symbols and everyone just playing very intensly and intently.. and "Mercy"
live is.....astounding...yes!
also , a 4AD promo tape " shaving the pavement" was given out at the show,
containing on it a beautiful live acoustic verion of 'Mercy' from the KCRW
radio show, with just NeiL and Rachel and one guitar.

Low is the only band I know that peels off a song *slower* than the Red House
Painters.  The tempo rarely picks up, but given the right mood, the lethargic
presentation of low can be very...appropriate.  Appropriate but it has the
tendency of veeringthisclose to tiresome.  While I enjoyed the shared
male/female vox present on  _I could..._ and _long division_, and could cite
6 songs between the two of them to be IMO 'very good', overall I would not
put them in the same bracket as Mojave in terms of who's better and who's
um...not as better :)

..I was also wondering about that "ambient" thing slowdive did that was done
for Leaf records?? how is it? descriptions etc.. ( yes, i love descriptions)
 also... how are the 'in mind' remixes?.. 
one of the few things i have yet to get from slowdive.. 
are they any good?,  simular to "good day sunshine" kind of stuff??
